Well this thread explains why Nintendo is slacking or simply doesn't care. Their consumers rarely care and or defend them anyways. I didnt hear in the original posters comments a desire to have photorealistic graphics. But there is no doubt Luigi would have looked better if it ran at 60fps and ODYSSEY would have looked better at 1080p. Almost all of their games could have used a 20% bump and I truly believe the few complainers would dramatically reduce.
Somehow mentioning the graphics to some people makes them think you really want a PS5 and or gameplay doesn't matter to you.
I just hope that after spending thousands on my switches that the games are eventually backward compatible. I also wish the Mclassic cable didn't cost so much and also need the user to decide what settings it should be on.
@sixrings You could even present your argument two ways, though. Luigi’s Mansion would look better at 60fps, and Odyssey would be more of a knockout at 1080p - doesn’t that mean Nintendo isn’t slacking in the graphics department, because it’s already pushing the system to the max?
@Krull they are doing their best with the hardware. That said they manufactured this hardware so they knew the limitations. Clearly portability was more a priority.
That said I am sure digital foundry did a episode comparing the new nvidia shield to the switch. If I remember correctly they both are using the same hardware but the shield can be boosted a bit (10%-20%) because it's docked only. That would satisfy my tastes. Also I believe the shield had some sort of 4k scaler built in. Another feature a switch could use.
@glaemay well I'm sorry to rub you the wrong way with the comparison. I thought Pixar was a compliment. I don't know the last time they didn't win for best animation. It's not my thing but people in general seem to love it. The bigger point though was that Pixar like Nintendo produces colourful cheery worlds. They just make sure they make them look the best as possible. I am a fan of that.
Why does it need to be either or (graphics or gameplay)? Is it not possible to have both? Clearly it is as there are a handful of switch games (admittedly mostly close to launch or Wii u ports) which run excellent. As I have said I'd prefer the effects be toned down if that helps them reach 1080p 60fps. Kind of like how fzero x worked on GameCube. Simple graphics but it ran well.
Games (I haven't yet played but) I find disappointing on the graphics front are Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Xenoblade Chronicles DE, and Pokémon SwSh.
But these are the exception. Generally I don't think Nintendo are 'slacking'. I don't think you can separate 'art style' from 'graphics' - the graphics are what you see on screen, which is significantly determined by the art style.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
Games (I haven't yet played but) I find disappointing on the graphics front are Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Xenoblade Chronicles DE.
Fire Emblem I was quite shocked by how bad some of the visuals were. The FE games on the 3DS were some of the most attractive on the system imo. The game was otherwise excellent though, so you should still play it. One of the best Fire Emblem stories I'd say.
Xenoblade I think looks as good as was possible without fundamentally remaking any of it (only the characters faces were remade from scratch). But given that they didn't remake all of the assets, and were therefore still largely using Wii assets, it was just ridiculous that they couldn't manage a better resolution. You can't really enjoy it in handheld at all because of the low resolution. That didn't happen to bother me because I always play games like this on a big screen at home, but it would certainly annoy some people. Especially when the Switch Lite exists. It's kinda an insult to people who own one of those.
Last time I can remember being truly disappointed with Nintendo's graphics is 10 years ago, when I was several years into HD TV ownership and was getting frustrated with the graphical fidelity of Wii games.
Since then? I mean, it kills me to play Fire Emblem 3 Houses handheld with THAT TEXT SIZE but I think of that more of a UI/accessibility issue than a graphics one.
Nintendo's games look great to me. They look as good as they need to, and don't distract me. 10 years after my Wii vs. HDTV problem, most Switch games look excellent when docked to my 4k set.
They've been behind in graphics for about 15 years. The last time a Nintendo console blew me away with graphics was Resident Evil Remake on the Gamecube. (Then again I have only small experience with the Switch and none with the Wii U).
However, Nintendo's first party games tend to work around these limitations well by taking a stylized approach to design rather than a photorealism one. Which makes remasters seem less dated. But by the same token I don't see Spiderman, even if licensing allowed, running at full PS4 Pro spec on Switch level hardware.
@gcunit@Dezzy
I have no idea what you guys are talking about. XCDE looks fantastic in handheld, much better than XC2 at least and it runs much smoother as well. I even think it looks better in handheld than BotW. 🤔
