Topic: 2019 Mario Spinoff Prediction Thread

Nintendo hasn’t announced any Mario spinoffs (other than Yoshi and Luigi’s Mansion 3), yet and usually there is at least one Mario branded spinoff per year, so may as well speculate. Here’s my predictions to start off with:
Yoshi Crafted World (NSW) March 2019
Paper Mario TYD (3DS) June 2019
Mario Golf (NSW) July 2019
M & L (NSW) September 2019
Luigi’s Mansion 3 (NSW) October 2019

I honestly think Nintendo might not go with the usual Mario spinoff games next year. The ones we already know about are ones that are from extremely unique series. Something more akin to a Mario Strikers sequel or a Super Sluggers sequel seems more likely just because we have not seen those franchises in quite a while (even though I have bias towards both games, as it would be my first experience with them).

@PolarExperience I could see another Mario Soccer game (I don’t think it’d be under the Strikers name and would have a lighter tone), but I can’t see another Sluggers game as NOE likely wouldn’t be willing to release it.

I honestly wish that it had been released in all regions. Soccer isn’t too big in the states (except for the Houston Dynamos, those guys are pretty popular), yet both Strikers and Charged released here. I just think that the Mario sports series needs more of a fresh take on it that isn’t related to the Olympics.

Surely a Mario Warriors spin-off with Koei Tecmo has to be on the cards?

More seriously, Nintendo must be considering a Mario RPG for Switch, probably with an announcement to come some time around the release of the Bowser's Inside Story remake.

@Krull There probably will be a Mario RPG this year, yet I don’t really want to know what it is. M & L has been degrading in quality, while Paper Mario is… weird.

In a world where everything seems like it's going down the drain, 2 brothers stand united to take the plunge(r) to the next level! It's a dirty, stinky job but someone has to do it. Be it big leaks or you need all new cooper plumbing you can count on this game being the very best ! Coming 2019, Super Mario Bros Plumbing Simulator!

@ReaderRagfish It would be nice if they did that, as they really did try to with Aces. They story mode wasn’t perfect, but I still felt accomplished after beating it, more than I ever would for any other sports game (except for Sluggers when I get to it, because that game has an excellent single player experience from what I have seen).

I think it is time for a new strikers. but I wish they would branch into hockey. (but that's just me). I kinda want a port of color splash but that is more because I know it will be a year or two before we get another paper mario

@Ryu_Niiyama Hockey, volleyball, and possibly rugby/U.S. football are all sports that would be pretty interesting as a Mario sports game. #BringBackSuperMarioSpikers.

Mario Strikers would be awesome. I think id take any Mario spin off as they all tend to be awesome. A Thousand Year Door remaster for Switch would be a dream come true.

At this point, the Paper Mario series can only live off remakes. The games haven’t been actual Paper Mario since Super Paper Mario (which was not traditional, but instead a fun twist on the partner mechanic and other great parts of the original two), and even that game had a pretty gimmicky presentation.

Super paper mario wasn’t a traditional paper mario either. (I also love it for this reason )

@Ryu_Niiyama Although there was hockey in Mario Sports Mix, I would like to see a Mario hockey game for the Switch. Perhaps we could also get an RPG along the lines of Super Mario RPG?

@MarioLover92 After so many console generations without one, it will almost definitely not happen.

Super Paper Mario was sublime. Id like to see another but I think its a few years away yet so TTYD remaster would be great to kill the time. I mean I could just fire it up on the GameCube but everything is better on Switch.

I have my doubts there will be a lot. Maybe another sports game or...a Color Splash port? I dunno.

Good question. There's no doubt 2019 is shaping up to be a crazy strong year for Nintendo and Switch owners... but, that makes it all the more difficult to place these spin-off titles on some sort of release schedule. I'm not going to include too much detail on my rationale, just my topline thoughts.

Yoshi is already down as H2 2019, so Summer.

Luigi's Mansion 3 is 2019, I'd expect it to be October.

We have NSMBU Deluxe in Jan 2019.

Paper Mario in 2020 as surely it's too similar to Yoshi and Yoshi is slap bang in the middle of the year.

Super Mario Odyssey 2 is surely going to happen. Holiday 2019 would be roughly in line with Galaxy/ Galaxy 2 release schedule... but if this happens, that means little other Mario in 2019 surely?

3D World porting from Wii U will happen in my opinion, but it surely wouldn't launch the same year as an Odyssey sequel...

Galaxy 1/2 porting from Wii and Sunshine remake from GC. Can't see any of this happening before 2021, if at all...

Mario Maker is surely a given, but again, when would this come out... Can't be too close to NSMBU Deluxe... can't be too close to an Odyssey sequel or 3D World port... Holiday 2020 seems a long time to wait?!

Mario Golf feels like Spring 2020. Pretty confident we will get this title. Pretty confident it'll be better than Mario Tennis Aces in quality and execution.

Mario Football is not something I'd write off, but I don't think it's this side of 2021, if at all.

Mario RPG is not something I'd write off, but I don't think it's this side of 2021, if at all.

Mario & Luigi feels like a 2021 title too, if at all. I could see something being announced off the back of the success of Luigi's Mansion 3 and Odyssey 2 perhaps...?!

@nocdaes While the devs have shared that there were ideas for SMO that were scrapped, I don’t believe that it is enough for an entire sequel, considering how much there is to do in the game.

@PolarExperience I remember a similar debate emerging after Super Mario Galaxy. A direct sequel with a 2 year development cycle can turn out a lot of content - no need to rely solely on scrapped ideas (although it's a good starting point, of course!). It's hard to believe they wouldn't add more content through DLC if there wasn't a sequel planned... but this is Nintendo we're talking about... they're notoriously difficult to predict.
