@FragRed you may be right. I'm just thinking Retro has their uannounced 'big gun' for next year and I know they revealed the last 2 at E3. Smash would be big, too.

Really excited about 2018 - I'd expect 11/12 releases if they can maintain current pace.
A tier: Fire Emblem already announced, Smash port, Pokemon for the holidays
B tier: Kirkby, Yoshi, Bayonet ta 3
C tier: Mario sports title, revival of an old IP, weaker wii u port

And a couple of wildcards surely (after Mario + Rabbids, anything is possible)

@BlueKnight07 Smash isn't new or something that will sell systems on it's own. With both Nintendo's biggest franchises out this year in order to drive Switch sales, and assuming Pokemon isn't until 2019 I fear there won't be anything big for next year. And no I don't consider Animal Crossing as a big system seller.

Smash is a massive seller and can also be considered a system seller like that of Zelda. Mario and Mario Kart are in the class of their own, but Smash and Zelda pretty much move the same amount of hardware historically.

Pokemon on the other hand is going to make the entire gaming world go nuts if it looks any good. It'll be a surefire hit. The phrasing on the spotlight was "It might not come out in over a year", which makes it something of a coin toss for next year.

Animal Crossing might not be a system seller for you, but the portable 3DS Animal Crossing beats the hell out of games like Monster Hunter, Smash, Fire Emblem and actually everything else than, yes, Mario, Pokemon and Mario Kart.

I hope Pokemon is going to be the holiday title next year because it'll be instant holiday win for Ninty.

Pokemon most definitely will be a 2019 title. A generation lasts 3 years at the minimum and Game Freak isn't going to jump hardware mid-generation.

Looking at the anime progression, Ash has only just recently gotten to Akkala Island, the second island in the game. He's not even close to being done. This goes hand in hand with Game Freak's timeline.

2018 will be a break year for main series Pokemon. Now, a Pokemon Mystery Dungeon on the other hand isn't out of the question and is in fact quite likely. The question with that though is whether it's on Switch or 3DS.

Anyways, as for Smash, yes it is a system seller.

Pokemon might easily go into 2019, as you said they have always had that multi year span, but then I really hope that Nintendo has some surprise for next year. They seem adamant on their idea of bringing out games on a steady basis and 2018 really could do with some big hitter.

What will it be, if not Pokemon?
Will they push Fire Emblem as the main game for next year. Might well be with the success of 3DS games and mobile version.

Or it might be that they will push Pikmin 4, or maybe the new Retro game if that is nearing completion.

Please... just please let it be Animal Crossing.

I edited my calendar to reflect possibility of not having Pokemon and replaced it with a new game.

January: Kirby / Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympics (Why don't we have any info on this?)
February: Mii Sports game
March: Virtual Console release
April: Paper Mario Color Splash port (With other Paper Marios on Virtual Console)
May: Captain Toad sequel
June: Yoshi
July: SNES Remix
August: Pikmin 4
September: Ubisoft game / FIFA / MADDEN
October: Mario Maker DX
November: (Previously Pokemon) NOW RETRO ZOMBIEACTIONPIRATENINJA-ADVENTURE
December: Fire Emblem

@Timppis I'm expecting them to push Smash Bros, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, and depending on what it is, Retro's title, as the main games next year.

Having Smash, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing and new Retro IP as top games for one publisher in a year would make any publisher happy

And a lot of gamers, including this one.

Man, I don't even know what else I want. My biggest wants are already covered, 3D Zelda, 3D Mario, Splatoon, Metroid Prime 4, Modern Sonic game, Pokemon. Aside from learning more about Prime 4 and Pokemon, they can just surprise me at this point. More new IPs and more new ideas for old IPs.

The big system sellers left to come (baring those with a proper date), Pokemon, Animal Crossing and Smash Bros.

So I would expect one a year, with "lesser" titles taking the slack.

Switch games list,

Legend of Zelda BotW, Human resource machine, NBA Playgrounds, Street Fighter 2, Super Bomberman R, Snipperclips, Overcooked, World of Goo.

@mav-i-am Don't forget the proper Fire Emblem title - that has also been promised.

Outside of Nintendo and affiliiates, Dragon Quest XI is also a system seller, but the fact the Switch release is trailing 3DS and PS4 means the Switch won't benefit much there.

The next Shin Megami Tensei is in no way a system seller, alas, but I'm still looking forward to it.

Color Splash isn't a game you port, lol.

To crush some silly expectation; Xenoblade 2 is a 2018 game until they give an actual hard date for a western country. And there's a good chance Metroid Prime 4 doesn't show up during 2018 at all, especially if there's a new Retro game to show off.

Right now we're at;

  • Kirby: TBA
  • Yoshi: TBA
  • Fire Emblem: The only untitled Switch game where the title won't matter.
  • Pokemon: TBA 8th gen
  • Retro Studios' new game / IP
  • Animal Crossing 5 with amiibo and phone game connectivity.
  • Maybe/probably Smash 4 Deluxe
  • Maybe/probably Xenoblade 2
  • Maybe/probably half of the indie games announced for Switch in 2017 which will get delayed.

So not a bad year, and with some creative accounting there's a game for every month. Just skip January and December and launch a game around the 31st so it covers two months. Of course that's assuming all of this comes, which, who knows? Retro's game is the biggest unknown, with the question of whether Fire Emblem and Pokemon will break out of their formula on new hardware coming in second.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

Timppis

@Aaron09

AC Mobile is on track for 2017, not AC for Switch.

Also Reggie said there are more titles in development that haven't been announced. It would be damn horrible if there wasn't. He didn't mention anything about announcing them at 2017 or that they would be 2017 or 2018 games.

That video was terrible.

as good as FE is, it is not close to being the system seller, the games I mentioned before are.

Switch games list,

@mav-i-am We'll agree to disagree! The success of Fire Emblem Heroes on mobile shows how the market for FE has grown. I think it more or less fits in that top category now - it may not sell as many copies as Smash, but there will be many people who buy a Switch just to play the new FE.

Fates & Awakening both sold under 2 million copies each (and my Daughter has 3 copies of Fates alone!), so its not there yet.

All we have is actual data, anything else is guess work.
