Topic: 1 Hour Battery Life?

Evening everyone.

Firstly I want to say I'm a massive fan of the Switch and thoroughly loving Zelda! One of the best games I've played in a long, long time.

However, has anyone else recently had a massive drop off in battery life while using the Switch in portable mode?

Until a few weeks ago I easily got 2 and a half to 3 hours battery life while playing Zelda in portable mode.

As of the last couple of weeks I'm lucky if I get 1 hour on a single charge. It usually goes from 100% to 0% in 45 mins or 1 hour max.

Has anyone else had this sudden decrease in battery life? I haven't changed any of the settings, still use the screen brightness at 3/4 etc. I have no idea what's happened, it came out of nowhere.

I've got in contact with Nintendo and awaiting a response, but thought I'd see if anyone else has had this issue or whether it's just me?

Yes! I am having this issue too! The first time it happened, I just thought that I didn't charge all the way before playing, but tonight I confirmed it. I started at 100%, and then I got the low battery warning after approximately 40 minutes of playing BotW...I'm bummed! I used to get 2-3 hrs. I guess I'll have to get in touch with them too. I'm glad I'm not the only one at least...

Yeah, that definitely sounds like the same issue sadly. I used my Switch again last night, even trying in Flight Mode just incase it was a WiFi issue and I got just over 40 minutes from 100%.

I kept my timer on and kept bringing up the battery meter, it was dropping 1-2% battery per minute of use ☹️

I haven't used my Switch extensively (work getting in the way sadly) and there is no way a battery could degrade that quickly, so I wonder if it's a software issue affecting a few devices? Especially if yours seems to only last the exact same amount of time (40 minutes or so).

Thanks for the feedback ☺️

Are you sure the battery is completely empty? Some (including myself) have had the issue that it actually displays a wrong number. More specifically: I could play 1,5 hours more Zelda with the battery at 1%. There's a thread about it in these forums that may be worth reading for you:

Hope that helps a bit, good luck!

Thank you for that! That is exactly the case!

Previously I plugged it in whenever I got to the 1% indicator. Just by chance I forgot about it this morning and noticed I'd been playing over 20 minutes since the warning... Kept playing and over an hour later it's still running on 1%.

So it appears the battery is fine but the indicator is completely off? Thanks again!

@Paperboy Wow! Thanks for sharing! This post was the first I saw when I did a search so I thought it was a newer problem. I'm relieved but kinda still annoyed? Lol. I'll have to try sleep mode rather than turning completely off to see if the indicator works better.

Yes, the relieve is that our batteries our fine! But it still is a weird and annoying problem. However, I took someone's advice in the other thread and that seems to have fixed it. Basically I played my Switch until the battery was completely empty (and would not turn on again), then fully recharged it and then never turned it completely off ever again (only using sleep mode). No problems since. Kind of stupid to never turn it completly off, but I guess there is no real need to

My battery has been fine. I ran 2 tests under the same conditions: playing zelda the whole time with screen brightness around 75% and airplane mode on. The first time I got 3:16 out of the battery and the second time I got 3:19. I am happy enough with that and have no need for an external battery.

That's good to hear that there's at least a stop gap resolution! It has to be software based, so I am sure it will be something Nintendo can rectify in the future with a patch, I hope 🙂

Until then, I'll take your advice and do the same in regards to not switching it off. Thank you for pointing me to that thread and the additional info, it's been much appreciated!

I'm having this issue too, for a couple weeks. What should I do?
