Hi guys. I am thinking about getting this for my Switch (2) when it releases tomorrow, as I like both Ys and Trails (LoH) Game series. My question is though, what type of game is this? Is it a Fighting game or is it an RPG like the other Ys and Trails/LoH games? Thoughts and help appreciated
Ys VS Trails is an arena fighting game based on the combat engine used for the Ys games at the time, so basically imagine if Ys Seven was turned into a PvP fighter. It doesn't have the most depth out there, but it is a pretty fun multiplayer party game with lots of content and fanservice if you're a Falcom fan, particularly from the Trails In The Sky trilogy and Ys Seven.
There's also a story mode, but it's mainly just arena fighting against CPU with portraits and dialog in between telling the story.
I bought it since I'm a diehard Falcom fan. I own every Trails and Ys game on Switch, plus Trails in the Sky 1st on NSW2 (and soon enough, Ys X Proud Nordics), and Tokyo Xanadu.
I like that you can play as Adol (Ys) and you can choose Estelle (Trails in the Sky), among others. But those were my two most wanted characters. I chose Estelle.

Hey! If you’re into Ys and Trails, you’ll probably be happy to hear this one is more in the RPG vein rather than a fighting game. It keeps that exploration and story-driven style you’d expect, with real-time combat instead of a traditional turn-based system. So it’s not exactly like a fighting game, but it still has action-packed battles that should feel familiar if you’ve played Ys before.
Definitely sounds like a good pick for fans of both series!

I still need to get this, seeing as I'm a huge Falcom fan. It just released at a poor timing with a bunch of other games taking up my attention.
While it obviously is a fighting game, what I know about its structure kind of reminds me a little bit of strategy RPGs, in how they tend to be "plot and context" interspersed with nods where you switch into a separate gameplay mode. Just, instead of finite scope tactical wargame, you have a fighting game match.
