@metaphysician I mean, that's why it depends on what meaning do you assign to the indie. I have called out Hoyoverse prwviously and I still will because if we go by independent, they are!
Tbh indies have always been more ot a vibe than anything else in the end imo.
anyway, I don't have a Switch 2 and haven't even played a lot of JRPGs on Switch 1, but I would say with backwards capabilities, Live a Live (which I guess you could make the case was AAA when it was a Super Famicom game?) was lovely. It's not anyone who wants something deep, especially in terms of combat (though it is still arguably deeper at points than some JRPGs of that era despite that), but if you like variety, if you like seeing a bunch of cool new ideas for the genre thrown at the wall to see what sticks, it is a treat. And as my currently only main experience with HD-2D (outside of when I tried the demo for Triangle Strategy), it is an absolutely incredible looking game, one of the best uses of sprites I've ever seen. Those two aspects make me adore this game, along with how cool and fun its best segments are (even if I think its a little hit or miss at points).
Like I bought some of the other HD-2D games last year as well, because despite being one of my favorite genres, I've been ignoring JRPGs for too long, except for Xenoblade (and FFXII, which might as well be a prelude to Xenoblade). I've played two Tales of games, zero Trails, zero Persona, a couple of hours of SMT, zero DQ except spinoffs, zero Wild Arms, zero Xenogears/Saga etc, I've ignored them for too long and I hope after Xenoblade 3 (doubly so after I get around to Genesis), I can spend some more time with them, ideally ones that AREN'T 60+ hours too.
Baldur's Gate 3 is the exact opposite of what I just said about Square Enix. It is AAA in all but "made by huge publisher". And even that's arguable considering the IP.
What?? What has IP to do with budgeting? BG3 is considered Indie (by some) because Larian was an AA Studio.
Yeah but no one who plays it thinks of it as a smaller budget game. The same way that an indie rock band can be under the biggest label and given tons of money for marketing but if they sound indie enough, they're still considered indie and no amount of factual information of not literally being indie will matter to people who hear it.
They essentially made a AAA game with AA resources.
Lol, indie means independent. Stop making up stories in order to stretch terms past their meaning.

Do you live under a rock? Indie has regularly been used for countless things that are literally not independent. It is absolutely used as a vibes based term and has been for a long time.
