I only take my Lite with me. My OLED is a couch handheld.

It just irks me, is all. It’s not really a handheld outside the house for most people, so it’s a misleading term to apply to it, especially if the Switch 2 is gonna be almost a foot long lol

@rallydefault I mean it still is a handheld. Just not one you can lug around with you in your pocket (unless you have a jacket with massive pockets). For me, a handheld is something you can game on even when you aren't sitting at your couch. Something you can play in bed, in a car, or at a hotel even without access to a TV. The Steamdeck is a handheld, even though it's massive to the point where you need a carrying case and a backpack to take it around in. Same goes for the Switch itself.

@rallydefault Heavily disagree given there's been cases where I've played the thing outside of my house and not on the couch.

I play a lot on trains and planes. I admit I've never played literally outdoors before though.

I agree with everything you're saying, but the thing that kind of gets my goat as a big handheld gamer is that this new Switch is baaaaaaarely a handheld. I mean, I would personally say it's not a handheld anymore. If it's truly going to be the specs we're seeing (11 inches with the joycons) it's just not practical for most people as an actual handheld system to leave the house with anymore.

Go pick up an original DS or 3DS. Heck, go pick up any GameBoy system. Now THOSE were handhelds. The Switch Lite, especially with the first-party soft shell, is pretty doable as a modern handheld, but even the original-sized Switch was pushing things in terms of it being convenient to carry around and taken out. The OLED is like holding a tablet.

This thing is just not even in the same realm anymore for handheld dimensions. 2 inches over the old model is A LOT when you're talking about something you're supposed to carry around. WITHOUT the joycon it's going to be as long as a Switch Lite. Geez. A hybrid that is fine to use around the house? Yea, whatever, who cares? But easy to just pop into your jacket pocket and use it on the train? Not anymore, nope, not at almost a foot in length, especially with a case that will inevitably add bulk. Woof. And I think it's a bit sad that Nintendo seems comfortable moving this direction, especially because I think the mobility of the Switch is its biggest selling factor.

I tend to agree.

We take our OG Switch when we go to friends' houses, but we don't take the Switch out much more than that.

My daughters are more likely to play games on their phones, and I have a 2DS (which isn't much more convenient than a Switch Lite) to carry around, but I already have it. And I have a few DS' in various states of disrepair. But the DS is easy to toss in my jeans pocket when I think I might get holed up somewhere for a bit.

I guess another why to think about it is . . . if the Switch 2 ends up being bigger, and I end up getting a Switch 2 . . . then it will make me ?appreciate? the smaller size of the OG Switch and take it more places? LOL.

But I got to admit, even though we don't take our OG Switch out of the house much, the collection of games on it has been great. The co-op games have been plentiful enough that it has kept us entertained as a family for the past 7+ years.

But having bought the Wii U, and 'been playing Mario Kart 8 for 10 years, we are looking forward to the next installment of Mario Kart. LOL.

I've taken my OLED to a few places, yes, but I'll admit it feels a bit weird. It's a pretty large device and tends to get some looks lol I can almost 100% say I won't be taking my Switch 2 footlong beyond my couch haha Maybe I'll try it with meatballs, though.

@NintendoDad
I'm still super pumped for it, yea, I just have this feeling that the people in here readily calling it a true handheld haven't held a DS or Gameboy-line console in many years, perhaps ever. Like you said, tossing my DS or GBC in my pocket is a heeeeeeck of a lot more convenient than packing up my Switch to go places, and from these leaked specs, that difference is going to become even more stark.

TDLR: Are Switch 2 leaks actually legit or are people just hyping them up.

@Mothertroid

Probably hyping up too much. Some folks are expecting the Switch 2 to perform like a PS4 Pro. Which is probably reaching a bit considering we're talking about an integrated SoC with less RAM than a Steam Deck. Digital Foundry uploading a nice vod yesterday talking about expectations.

The Switch 2 will be big enough to serve as a paddle for spankings.

@Magician
Haven't watched the DF vid, don't think they're going to cover anything that's not already out there in technical speculation land. But I would note the comparisons with other consoles is tricky. Both because of the radically different architectures and features but also because this console, like the Switch before it, will have two modes with radically different performance profiles

Will it perform like the PS4 Pro? In terms of raw compute in portable mode. Not a chance. But in terms of actual output with the addition of DLSS, more memory and a more modern design when you send the image to an 8" 1080p display? Yeah, probably. And when docked all of the concerns about the power draw and node go out the window. Docked it's going to outclass the PS4 Pro. Comfortably

Really makes me hope Nintendo considers doing a pro model for this system in order to max out power even if that means the Switch 2 Pro is home console only.

@Mothertroid
I'm hoping for the opposite.

I'd take a non-footlong version even if it couldn't dock.

Now regarding that, they did say it was not official, but that doesn’t mean any of the leaks could be fake. What Genki showed was a mock-up based on the real design.

News is a day old, but some brave soul risked their job to post a grab of the Switch 2 turned on.

@Magician That's crazy to see. We really might get the whole console leaked. Based on Nintendo's comments they seem ready to take their precious time right now which means it'll continue to leak. Honestly I don't really care how the news comes out ,but I'm ready to see the UI!

Looks like the Nintendo Ninjas have been sent to Genki’s booth as CES 2025 following Genki showing off Switch 2 dummy units.

Nintendo did say those dummy units were unofficial, but they never said they were fake (even Genki said the dummy units were based on mock-ups of the real design, not an actual unit). Wait, is Nintendo hinting that will be the real Switch 2 design, as well as the other leaks being real?
