I followed the hype cycle for the original Switch pretty aggressively (hard to believe it was so long ago) and remember seeing a lot of leaks like we're seeing now with Switch 2. It was a fun time to imagine where Nintendo could go from the Wii U. But at the end of the day, almost none of them turned out to be true. Despite this, I still enjoy looking at leaks, but I never put stock in them. That said I am genuinely curious. Why are some people acting like the Switch 2 leaks have confirmed the whole system? Is there some factor that makes this set of leaks more legitimate than the past leaks? I don't have enough industry knowledge to assess this myself.
TDLR: Are Switch 2 leaks actually legit or are people just hyping them up.
@Mothertroid
With the Switch we got a lot more official information from Nintendo themselves before the announcement. We knew it was launching with BotW and we knew that Nintendo was restructuring their development studios for single platform development. The only real "leaks" we got were in the couple of months before the October trailer. That it was a tablet with detachable "WiiMote-like" controllers and that it was using some Tegra SoC
There were obvious forgeries, like that oval shaped thing, and there were some pushing wild speculations, like SuperMetalDave. There were also a lot of people wishing that NX was going go confirm to their hopes and dreams. Same as we're getting now. There were also eventually factory leaks and so on. But the only ones that landed before that October trailer were contained in that one Eurogamer article
This time it's different because NVidia was hacked a few years ago. A lot of the details about the SoC and the API they were building for Nintendo's next platform are known. Because that information was stolen. The other information we got last year about the amount of RAM, storage, physical size, other components? That's all shipping information, which we know is for Switch 2 because it ties back to that same SoC
Outside of that, with the actual factory leaks themselves we've seen over the last few months. Honestly, it's not that different to what we saw for Switch. The difference is that Nintendo isn't saying anything. If Nintendo had dropped a trailer for Switch 2 in late October? Nobody would care about these recent leaks. Just as they didn't care about them when they happened for Switch. But the only thing Nintendo has said is that this console is backwards compatible and will be announced before the end of March..... so the leaks make the headlines, not Nintendo press conferences
The leaks, the ones that I've seen being discussed at least, all legit

At this point we pretty much know everything about the Switch 2 thanks to most of the leaks. The design, how the Joy-Cons will attach, specs (most likely), but there’s still the question of what the cartridges will look like and if there will be some way they’ll be different than Switch cartridges.
@MrCarlos46 Yeah, we pretty much know a good chunk about the console. The only thing we don't know is the cartridges, the launch games, and the UI for the system/built-in features. Also we don't know what the C button does.

Nothing has been true this so far, otherwise Nintendo had already sued them all for breaking NDAs and etc.
That everything are still up on internet untouched yet today, tells everything.
Not a chance that Nintendo will release a new console which looks almost exactly the same as the original Switch. It just looks like a new Switch XL version according to all those ridiculous "leaks".
It will confuse +90% of the potentially customers, since majority of them doesn't frequents on forums. Switch Reddit only has +7m members which is nothing compared with Switch's +150m in sales now. Why should Nintendo suddenly create by themselves a new Wii U situation now?
I may be wrong or not, we'll just wait and see.
Of course it may ending up looking exactly as those "leaks", but I still very firmly believes in that they're just fakes.
There is a reason why that every Playstations looks extremely vastly different apart from each other. It's to not confuse the customers.
Speaking of leaks, there are already pictures of Switch 2 Joy-Cons from a Chinese factory. If you look real closely (due to image quality), it also has the product code BEE-.
I checked for the serial number on the Nintendo Repair Center website, and it pretty much confirms these are the real thing. I think it also confirms all the other hardware leaks we’ve been getting over the past weeks.
Looks like the rails will be the ones that get colored and not the Joy-Con shells themselves. I’m hearing it’s so you can easily tell which Joy-Con is which when you detach them from the Switch 2. And it looks like these Joy-Cons will be magnetic like we’ve been hearing.
Never noticed there was an optical sensor on the rails. We might be able to use the Joy-Cons as a mouse.
I think the Wii U -to - Switch transition was especially exciting because the Wii U was a total flop and we knew Nintendo needed a hard pivot.
This time around, not so much.
For those of us hoping to see something a little different, even while sticking with the hybrid nature, we're going to be disappointed: This is going to be a more powerful Switch in exactly the same form factor.
My only holdout is for it to have that "cast to TV" button to allow for some dual-screen creativity.
@skywake So if I understand you correctly. The data from the Nivida hack allows us to corroborate some of the other leaks in order to prove they are legit? That's good to know.
I realize my memory might also be a bit biased. I forgot about some of the switch leaks that were closer to the final design. Probably because the more outlandish ones stood out in my memory, that oval thing was crazy.
My only holdout is for it to have that "cast to TV" button to allow for some dual-screen creativity.
Me too. While I think it makes sense to keep it mostly the same. Something like this could be a fun way to add some additional fun and charm. Maybe they'll even be able to bring back one of my favorite Wii U games, affordable space adventures!
To me the main difference is the lack of official statements about it. Outside of Nintendo confirming it exists and will be announced in a certain period of time, its been basically nothing.
Whereas last time, like a year before release, we had several NX confirmations, including DQ11, BOTW and Just Dance, probably some others. Which I guess is what happens when you go from the least to most successful Nintendo console, people are too busy actually making games for Switch to casually announce games for a not yet shown system.
@Keman Hate to break it to you, but all of this is real. The chinese warehouse leaks are real, and same with the one that showed the external shell of a console a while back. The accessories are also real. NDAs aren't as simple as you make them out to be either. There's a huge possibility that the reveal of the Switch 2 was planned for late last year, and got delayed due to unforseen circumstances. If manufacturers signed an NDA, it was most likely agreed upon for them not to reveal anything until the original date and time of the system's reveal. That day clearly has come and gone, and due to that the manufacturers are free to reveal the accessories as Nintendo most likely didn't renew the NDAs that were signed.
Either that, or the manufacturers are all breaking NDA- which is a massive possibility. One of the companies said how they weren't scared of Nintendo threatening litigation on them for revealing the switch 2, and a lot of these manufacturers are obscuring the console.
As for the whole "Nintendo wouldn't make the system look just like the Switch," yes they would. Are you forgetting how the 3DS looked just like a DS but with a 3D slider? Or how the Gameboy color looked just like the Gameboy? This is a similar situation. The Switch 2 is a 3DS type situation, where it'll still be a switch console. The only difference is just like the 3DS- it will end up being more powerful than the Switch 1. Nintendo's handheld consoles tend to stay the course for a while and keep a concept about. Nintendo won't change their approach for around another 7 years most likely.

@VoidofLight
I agree with everything you're saying, but the thing that kind of gets my goat as a big handheld gamer is that this new Switch is baaaaaaarely a handheld. I mean, I would personally say it's not a handheld anymore. If it's truly going to be the specs we're seeing (11 inches with the joycons) it's just not practical for most people as an actual handheld system to leave the house with anymore.
Go pick up an original DS or 3DS. Heck, go pick up any GameBoy system. Now THOSE were handhelds. The Switch Lite, especially with the first-party soft shell, is pretty doable as a modern handheld, but even the original-sized Switch was pushing things in terms of it being convenient to carry around and taken out. The OLED is like holding a tablet.
This thing is just not even in the same realm anymore for handheld dimensions. 2 inches over the old model is A LOT when you're talking about something you're supposed to carry around. WITHOUT the joycon it's going to be as long as a Switch Lite. Geez. A hybrid that is fine to use around the house? Yea, whatever, who cares? But easy to just pop into your jacket pocket and use it on the train? Not anymore, nope, not at almost a foot in length, especially with a case that will inevitably add bulk. Woof. And I think it's a bit sad that Nintendo seems comfortable moving this direction, especially because I think the mobility of the Switch is its biggest selling factor.
@rallydefault Ehh, I still count it as a handheld so long as I can take it anywhere I go and not have to hook it up to a tv. I take my Switch with me in my backpack on trips, and play when I have downtime in hotels or in the house. I usually don't really play games anymore on transport (mainly because I get nauseous from it, but also because I have music I listen to instead). If I did though, I'd just bring the case in my backpack and play it. I don't think anything will change even with the Switch 2 being larger for me.
