I wouldn't say the games get overshadowed by a reveal. It's the same "but there are holidays soon" argument. You could make the argument that a reveal could actually boosts sales of games. More eyes on Nintendo in general -> more potential customers (through hype or otherwise). And it wouldn't massively hurt hardware sales.

@Grumblevolcano The gap between Jamboree and Brothership is the same as between EoW and Jamboree though, so there's plenty of time in that gap that they could reveal Switch 2.

Full disclosure. I have no data to back this up, it's just a theory which anyone is welcome to say if it holds water or not lol

Could it be a case for console reveal timing that if the console is coming off the back of a lower selling console, like N64 and Gamecube, then there is no harm in announcing a console as late as November. But if the previous console is selling stronger, you want to reveal it earlier in the year (like E3 time.) Now granted as they said fiscal year, I can see as late as March (January is a dead month.)

Basically, if your console is a flop, you need something to make you relevant in the holiday season and an announcement usually does this.

Just to reiterate...this is just corporate theory (and I am no CEO lmao!)

I think people are overthinking it. E3 doesn't exist anymore and so there isn't this central point of focused for the year. That's why stuff used to be announced and why it slowly became a less popular place to announce things until it died

Then secondly with the Switch announcement cycle they had to appese investors. Reassure them that they were still in the hardware game. That's why we got more concrete and earlier timing for Switch. This doesn't apply for Switch 2 so they can be more vague and only have to really disclose what they're doing this financial year. Announcement, not release

Everything else is just a question of how much time they need for promotion, distribution, production etc

Considering they want to sell switch consoles for the holidays, wouldn't it make sense for them to wait until after the holiday shopping season is over before announcing? Especially because they just announced a few new special editions. I’m sure a lot of people would wait to buy one if they know a new system is coming out in a few months.

@JesseA I mean to be fair, most parents don't exactly look at the product listings when buying a console. There's definitely still a lot of sales to be had, regardless if people are being sold an "inferior" product that will be replaced in a couple of months.

To be clear, I meant E3 just in the sense of time of year

Think about the equation you're describing. Do you think Nintendo would be concerned about someone not buying Switch and choosing to instead wait a few months for the more expensive, new release laden, longer life left ahead of it Switch 2? Because I don't think they would be

The amount of Switches they've got knocking around in storage could be a factor. If you've got 2 million units made and sitting on shelves, you'll have one eye on trying to clear some of that. Perhaps.

@gcunit
They sold 6mill 3DS units the year the Switch launched, 9mill DS the year 3DS launched, 5mill Wii the year the Wii U launched. They're probably shifting at least another 15mill regardless of what happens with this announcements. I don't think they're at all concerned about Switch stock

I wonder how much the retailer situation fits into all this. You have physical retailers disappearing or heading towards not selling physical anymore meanwhile online retailers are breaking street date for games like Jamboree.

@Grumblevolcano Yeah a lot of retailers are either struggling or going digital only (or are at least considering it). Even Amazon US doesn’t have Nintendo games until/after release, and most eShop gift cards are unavailable. I wonder if the next console will be pre-order-able on Amazon US or not. Nintendo certainly doesn’t want people to get their hands on a console early.

There's the first tweet of the day. It seems the playtest will still be a mystery by the time more info drops on Sunday evening/Monday morning to those who got into the playtest.

@Grumblevolcano Today's also the two year anniversary of Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope and the eighth anniversary of the Switch reveal trailer.

If we're getting an announcement today (specifically, about the new NSO feature), it's probably 11 or 13 1/2 hours from this tweet

Might it be possible that during tomorrow's last video of Sakurai-san, he announces a Nintendo Direct to air the following day? His video's going to be 40 minutes long, and we have no idea what it's going to be about.

Part of me hopes it includes a first look at his next game and it'll be the first officially announced game for Switch 2. Ending the video with a line like "Find out more about the game and the next Nintendo console during tomorrow's Nintendo Direct" would be really sweet.

But it'll probably be a video about his cats instead. 😹

I hope Sakurai announces he has accepted a job at Playstation or something along those lines, lol.

Nintendo fandom frothing at the mouth if he announces anything not Smash or Kid Icarus related.
