@Jack_Goetz personally I felt Pirates Curse was a bit flawed towards the end, that there was too much distracting “fan service” of the type Way Forward is known and that the levels were largely more linear and disconnected than I’d like in a Metroidvania. It’s a good game but not top tier in my personal opinion.
@Dhaladog Genuinely think Prince of Persia Lost Crown is a fantastic example of a modern-day contemporary Metroidvania... bursting with so many cool QoL features, and accessibility options. Great for beginners, but also harder modes for those who like to be punished
Metroid Dread also class
My personal favorite though is Nine Sols - like a 2D Sekiro
@Jack_Goetz it’s definitely a personal taste thing between them. I like my Metroidvania’s to have a single connected world.
The ‘fan service’ is a bit egregious in Pirates Curse. Honestly I was a bit shocked by how seedy it was for a mainstream game (I’m easily shocked tbf) and also how “in jokey”. Sirens had less of that and it felt like more of a cohesive game.
The power ups were better integrated in Pirates Curse. So I can get why people prefer it.
Axiom Verge 1 should be cheap and is very Metroidveiny.
Currently playing through Ender Magnolia which is a little more like Hollow Knight but has difficulty settings for smoothing out the boss difficulty spikes. That's also quite cheap at the moment.
