While I would love to see some of their games priced lower, I believe that Nintendo is holding prices in order to not “devalue“ their games. Healthy Nintendo means game prices do not drop and we don’t see Nintendo Selects making a comeback. I have skipped many 1st party games because I have little interest and the games are more than I’m willing to pay. I would probably have purchased quite a few games if they had a significant sale…but I don’t think they need to do it. So they don’t. But I am only speculating here.

Ok, but something has to give. I paid $60 for Super Smash Bros Ultimate and it doesn't work online. That's not my idea of healthy. If they're going to charge a premium for a game that was released in 2018, then it has to work. Technically it should work no matter what it costs, but especially so if I have to pay $60 for it.

Also, if I’m paying a premium for MP-focused games, like Strikers, and it’s hard to find matches online, that’s not healthy either. In no world can you charge a premium for something that doesn’t offer a premium experience and call that healthy. Either the price has to go down to match the experience, or the game has to be patched to match the price. It has to be one or the other. Otherwise, in certain cases, we're just paying for the illusion of a non-devalued premium experience.

Ok, to be fair, while it would never work and would've obviously been insane and unacceptable if it actually happened, Smash Ultimate has so much content that I'd have found it worthwhile without online at all tbh. Because I've not enjoyed what I played online and I still don't have any regrets with my purchase.

Honestly Splatoon 3's online is not as bad but it is worse enough than 2's that I found it to be far more troublesome than Smash because online IS fairly vital to my enjoyment of it.

I do wonder with Nintendo, Microsoft and perhaps Sony to a lesser extent pushing up gaming prices for hardware, software and services whether more people will abandon the classic consoles and go fully to PC.

We would all benefit tremendously from that, but unfortunately, I don’t think it will ever happen. Even though a PC is cheaper to own long-term, the initial cost of building a decent one is enough to keep a lot of people away. On top of that, there are people who love the tradition of playing certain games on console. I know someone who refuses to buy fighting games on PC even though they’re exactly the same and support cross-platform MP. Somehow, to them, it still feels better to play fighters on console.

You don't need a fast pc to play most PC games. Yes you can build something fast but many of the billions of PC gamers around the world use older PCs. PC's also have so many options from full desktops to mini pcs, laptops, gaming handhelds etc. The Switch 2 is not a powerful system it has very low CPU resources and fairly low GPU performance but is an acceptable platform for games.

For some it seems like you have to have a powerful PC if you are having a PC but why not just buy something that can play most games well but not the very latest games. My mini pc a Ryzen 7 5700U cost me 130 pounds but has 9x the CPU performance of Switch 2 or about 30x the CPU performance of the original Switch. It has about 2Tf of GPU performance enough to play a huge chunk of modern PC games. Yes it doesn't have the RDNA 2 graphics of a Steamdeck but it still quite capable for running a lot of later games. It's also very powerful for emulation where it competes even better as many emulators are restricted by CPU performance not GPU. It's an absolutely tiny mini pc with very low power requirements. Yet my mini pc is rubbish compared to some dearer models that feature later Ryzen chipsets and perhaps are in the 200 pounds plus catagory. The mini pcs that Aliexpress have an offer are always changing, the best deal is never the same a week later. Anyway my point is there is an entry point to pc gaming as little or as much as you want. If you are playing multi-platform games on a Switch 2 you are happy to compromise on overall quality of gaming so why not apply the same logic to PC and just buy a PC that is a comfortable purchase for you.

I've played Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for... checks Switch play activity... 235 hours or more, and less than 30 of those hours were online. I reciprocate this.

My top 5 favorite games:
1: Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1
2: Pokémon Violet
3: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
4: The Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening (2019)
5: Animal Crossing New Horizons

The Switch 1 era, is absolutely a great era, even surpassing the SNES as my favorite console. The Switch 2 era, based off of the one S2 game I've played so far, as been underwhelming. So from my experience, it's not off to a great start.

That’s a really large sample size. You must have put in a lot of time and effort to come to this conclusion. 😂👍

@jfp To be fair, it is far too early to be saying anything about the Switch 2 'era' 😆

@FishyS I don‘t know, we might actually be entering the 'age' of Switch 2 real soon …🤣

Well considering it's a Nintendo first party game, and a launch title... I expected a far better gaming experice.

Honestly, I think Mario Kart World was always going to feel underwhelming compared to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It’s the same situation the next Smash Bros. game is going to face with Ultimate, when you follow up something that massive and complete, anything smaller is bound to feel like a downgrade by comparison (is it fair? Probably not). Unfortunately though, once a series hits that “best of the best” status, cutting back in any way just makes the next installment feel like it’s missing something.

Here’s the thing, I’ve put nearly 600 hours into Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (it's one of my favorite Switch games), and I can already tell Mario Kart World isn’t going to get anywhere near that kind of playtime. It’s tough to go all in on this one when I can still boot up MK8D and race on over 90 tracks.

Mario Kart World needed to surpass Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, as far as I'm concerned it hasn't yet. Maybe in the future, if it gets DLC/major upgrades, I might change my mind, but right now, that just isn't the case IMO.

@Lony85 Ah, the curse of the sequel. Still a great pack-in though. Maybe Air Riders will do the trick for you and November rings in your own personal age of Switch 2.

I am looking forward to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds (as it should be a fun game to play with my kids), plus there are definitely a few other first party games I have high hopes for (DK: Bananza, and Metroid Prime 4). Also, looking forward to Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment.

@Lony85 Can't speak for Cross Worlds (though many seem to prefer it to MKW), but DK Bananza is a really great game, hope you'll enjoy it. I have high hopes for Prime 4 too and couple of weeks off from work in December to really dig into it. So really looking forward to that.

I don't think any one console will ever beat the sheer quality ratio of good games to bad games in the SNES library, although the Switch 2 with the Switch library included could do it.

So many releases I'm looking forward to for both:
Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake
Octopath Traveller 0
The Duskbloods
Resident Evil (multiple)
Terminator 2D: No Fate
Inazuma Eleven Victory Road
Kirby Air Riders
Yooka Replayee
Dragon Quest I & II
Yoshi & the Mysterious Book

@Lony85 I don't think a $80 game being good only after future DLC will change my mind at all; in fact it makes me extremely hesitant to pay them any more money at all.

Is Crossworlds being a $70 game which hid the things people were most excited about in a quickly released $30 season pass any better? 😆

If you're talking about ratio... you want a console without many games 😆 maybe virtual boy wins. Or Wii U.

snes had 1700 games which included a lot of pretty bad ones. But considering Switch has well over 10,000 games and a lot of them are in the 'slop' category, I would say Switch definitely has a worse ratio.

@OmnitronVariant That was more a comment to the room since people were comparing Crossworlds and Mario Kart World.

Mario Kart World has slightly better professional reviews but massively worse player reviews mainly because it was review-bombed because of price. But no one seems to complain about Crossworlds pricing even though for most people it is significantly more expensive. 😝

The Nintendo 64 era was the best Nintendo era for me. So many memorable games: Zelda Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, Diddy Kong Racing, Goldeneye 007 (Was a revolutionary FPS at the time), Banjo Kazooie and Tooie, Mario Kart 64, Paper Mario, Perfect Dark, DK64 and Smash Bros. Cool accessories like rumble pak was also introduced at the time. This era also saw the release of revolutionary games like Pokemon Gen 1 and 2 from Nintendo on the Game Boy. I haven’t experienced a better era in gaming than the 90s.

Hot take: price should have nothing to do with how good a game is.

Lony85

@rallydefault eh, I feel if I'm paying about $120 (with taxes for Mario Kart World) for a first party Nintendo game (DK: Bananza, Pokemon Legends: Z-A are $112 after taxes), I absolutely deserve to get my money's worth when buying a game (and I don't care if that makes me entitled)

Now granted, my copy of Mario Kart World, was probably a bit cheaper, as it was a bundle, but I absolutely did not get my money's worth. Mario Kart World is a subpar game IMO.

I've put roughly ten hours into MKW, and I have no desire to keep playing it. If Nintendo delivered a great gaming experience, I wouldn't want to go back to playing MK8D instead, but I do. This for me, is a rare case where I feel Nintendo absolutely dropped the ball.

@Lony85
I think it’s pretty dumb, just being honest. Not saying you in particular, I just think it’s sad when someone says they’d like a game more if it was 10 bucks cheaper. Makes no sense to me, and I’m glad my brain doesn’t work like that.

And if you got it digitally with the console, you paid 50 bucks for it. So…. I really don’t get that one.

World rocks. I love it. And I’ll never be great at the wall tech and all that, but dang it’s fun.
