@skywake: Oh, definitely. At least here in the States, 4k is on a swift rise. I give it 1 more year until it's pretty wide spread among enthusiasts, and 2 years until we start seeing general population saturation and very reasonable prices. Even now, if you're patient, you can score a large 4k set from a good brand under 2,000 dollars. I know as soon as I get my reimbursement check for my last grad. class, I'm buying a 4k TV.

Knowing Nintendo, will it reallllllly be 4K?
An option for such would be nice, though

I recently noticed one more piece of evidence suggesting that Nintendo is not releasing a home console until 2017.

Their last 3 platforms have all seen very few releases during transition years.

N64-2001:
Dr. Mario 64
Animal Crossing

GC-2006:
Baten Kaitos Origins (Japan and North America only)
Chibi-Robo!
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Odama

Wii-2012:
Rhythm Heaven Fever
PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond
Mario Party 9
Kirby's Dream Collection (Japan and North America only)
The Last Story (Published by Nintendo outside of North America)
Inazuma Eleven Strikers (Published by Nintendo in Europe only)
Project Zero 2: Wii Edition (Japan and PAL regions only)'
Kiki Trick (Japan only)
Just Dance Wii 2 (Japan only)

Even though the Wii list looks pretty long, the only original Nintendo games on there are Rhythm Heaven, PokePark, Mario Party, The Last Story, and Kiki Trick.

On the flip side, here is what we ALREADY have announced for Wii U in 2016:
Zelda TP-HD
Zelda U
Star Fox Zero
SMT X FE
Pokken Tournament
Mario and Sonic at Rio

There are already as many original titles announced for 2016 as the Wii had for the entire 2012, and more than the GC or N64 had in 2006 or 2001. I find it unlikely that Nintendo is putting so much development effort into a console that is about to be retired.

@iKhan: This year is certainly looking to be just as good as last year's Splatoon, Kirby, Yoshi, Mario Maker and Xenoblade X. Not that that's saying much, but still, I think this is going to be a great year for the Wii U.

@iKhan: SMT X FE ... is that still happening? Serious question, not trying to be a jerk. I thought things have been eerily quiet on that front for awhile. I really hope it's still coming, because that would be a definite buy for me!

@rallydefault: Yeah, it's called Genei Ibun Roku #FE now, at least in Japan. It released on December 26 in Japan, localisation takes a while, but I believe they said something about a Spring release for the west, if I'm not mistaken. It's definitely coming this year though.

@gizmo998: Nice idea, doubt it. Nintendo confirmed it to be it's own dedicated gaming hardware (emphasis on hardware).

No. I'm just saying we're maybe 2 years away from it being entirely possible in that console pricepoint. We're already at the point where it's possible in that console form factor. Mostly I'm just saying that 4K is far more likely than (decent) VR.

I am quite sure nintendo could do a decent VR machine today if they wanted to. They have all the technology to do it. The streaming from the gamepad, and instead of having to screens, use the parallax tech from the 3ds to reduce cost. Paired with the free-form screen and you could have something that could cover both eyes without being overly heavy.

But I think VR will always be a niche market. It will always have the cumbersome factor. And would a VR console be a home console or a portable? As a portable, would you use it outside your home? As a home console, would you really want it tethered to the tv since it have it's own screen?

Personally I get annoyed by 3d-glasses at the cinema, I can only imagine how anoyed I would be with a helmet.

I think VR is the future, but we are only at the first step. It's going to be supported well on PC, but it will be several years before it becomes mainstream across consoles.

There have been a couple NX leaks and are pretty interesting. This stuff is from people that have leaked accurate info before(on Wii U), but it should still be taken with a grain of salt. The first two contradict, but after that, they seem to agree.

-Two leakers say at least one major Western dev doesn't have dev kits (could be the same dev)
-one says at least one major 2nd and/or 3rd party has a dev kit and the NX is awesome(another leaker confirms that he got the same info)
-540p handheld
-John Harker: releases this year

Over at Beyond3d some dude posted the following:

"I met up with a guy I know that works for Nintendo the other day and I slipped in some questions about NX. He has seen some prototypes and said it is a interesting device. I tried asking him whether NX would be one platform and he said yes but when I asked if that means it would be a handheld that you plug into a home station or something like that he didn't gave much of an answer though he is not in R&D or development and might not know.

It also looks like Nintendo is working on a new game in a franchise that has been missing since Wii and is heavily requested by western fans. Apparently Nintendo listened to the community and decided to make a new game. The reason Nintendo hasn't done so much with this franchise is because its not that popular in Japan and Nintendo being a Japanese company, if Japan doesn't ask for it they think the rest of the world doesn't care either. Won't mention the title as there hasn't been anything officially announced.

Some other little tidbits that might be fun to know is that Nintendo employees get 20% off on hardware but they don't really have to buy any games as they can just borrow them from the office library."

@Eat_Pie: that philosophy regarding Japan if true is....really, really lame.

I wouldn't be surprised if only select devs have kits. Either way, the ones that do are definitely on very, very strict NDAs.

@WebHead
Yep. The leaker who leaked the second point said that NDAs were much tighter than they were with Wii U and it was hard getting info.

I'm in the handheld camp as most likely option. The most interesting thing for me is what they plan on doing with the 3d. I love that stable3d they have and want to see it as a default.

That, and on the vr thing, I'd guess Nintendo is much more interested in technology like Microsoft's hololens. Still consider it unlikely in the next year or two.

@Eat_Pie: Very interesting. Grains of salt definitely needed haha, but always cool to hear about this insider stuff, if nothing more than to one day look back and see how accurate it was.

At first I was diehard "it's a home console," but after conversations in this thread and others, I've become MUCH more agreeable to the idea of it being a new handheld. Do we need to move on from the DS family as much as we need to move on from the Wii? Nintendo employs analysts with waaaay more expertise than anyone here has, so that's really a question only people at Nintendo know when looking to the future. So again, maybe the truth of this new console's identity lies somewhere in between the mobile and home.

Okay time for a real or BS analysis

Two leakers say at least one major Western dev doesn't have dev kits (could be the same dev)
I believe this, I hope it's not true given that Nintendo had this problem with the Wii U, but given that it's happened before, it makes sense. Likelihood rating: 7/10

one says at least one major 2nd and/or 3rd party has a dev kit and the NX is awesome(another leaker confirms that he got the same info)
Most rumors say the dev kits are out now. The latter statement is subjective, not really a leak at all. Likelihood rating: 9.5/10

540p handheld
As I've said before, if they aren't going to run Android or something similar, they should avoid HD. Given Nintendo's historical tendency to keep their handhelds at low specs, I believe this. But this could also just be a shot in the dark. Likelihood rating 3.5/10

John Harker: releases this year_
Yeah that's what pretty much everyone is saying. Likelihood rating: 9/10

This sounds like a pretty reasonable interaction. Unlike most fanboy "leaks", this interaction didn't result in all the beans being spilled. We pretty much get confirmation of what Nintendo's been suggesting for a while, and that's it.

It also looks like Nintendo is working on a new game in a franchise that has been missing since Wii and is heavily requested by western fans. This sounds like a fanboy "leak". It's basically baiting Metroid without saying it. There are franchises Nintendo does pay attention to overseas like Zelda. Most accurate leaks I've read don't really refer to "Nintendo listening to the community".

What are this guy's credentials? I looked at his post history, and while he doesn't seem to be the kind of guy who makes an account to post a leak, I don't see any prior accurate leaks either.

Overall, one of this guy's tidbits is likely, but the rest of the info kind of disqualifies it. Likelihood rating: 1/10

@Eat_Pie: I wouldn't be surprised if this is true. Now that I think about it, split releases of the NX does sound likely. The port of AC:Liberation sound 1000x more likely. You watch it when Ubisoft blames us that the game doesn't sell and stops supporting the system. -_-

I am a human.

@iKhan: I see you lurk on Neogaf's threads also Much more controlled and reasonable NX discussion over there.
