This has me really excited but I don't want to get my hopes up too high. The fact that they took it down makes me think it's legit. I hope this is a new DKC game from Retro Studios but I would also be down for a 3D DK platformer.
I would be thrilled if a new DKC Returns game was announced at E3 this year. The original on Wii was absolutely fantastic, and although I haven't played Tropical Freeze yet I know it's supposed to be amazing as well, so a brand new installment would be great. However, I hope it's not what Retro's been working on. 5 years of silence, only to reveal a 2D platformer? I'd prefer that they work on something a bit more ambitious, like they did with the Metroid Prime series.
Mario Galaxy is ten years old, and now I feel old.
More ambitious than a new DKC game? I think Retro's two DKC games have been the most ambitious 2D platfromers ever made. There's nothing I want more than a sequel to Tropical Freeze. But Retro is a big enough studio that I think after all this time they've probably been working on two games: a DKC game and a new IP.
I very strongly doubt that there will be another Donkey Kong game released so soon after Tropical Freeze. Yes, it has been four years since it was initially released, but most of these Wii U ports are only now just finding an audience.
I suppose there could be something on the cards for a holiday release, but it is highly uncharacteristic of Nintendo to release two entries from a franchise in such close proximity to each other.
"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"
While I don't mind DK itself, a Tropical Freeze sequel wouldn't be very ambitious, not if it's another level pack game with copy/pasted mechanics like so many other 2D platformers this decade. DK could stand to learn some new tricks.
So yeah, if it's really nothing more than just a third DKCR/TF game, Retro's talents would be better spent elsewhere. Rather see them revive another forgotten IP or create their own.
I have quite mixed feelings about it. I absolutely love Country Returns, but as long as I really like Tropical Freeze it is not as good as the first one, so I hope with the third one they will make a game as good as the first one again.
My DK dream game would be Country Returns without rocket stages, with cart stages used to replace rocket stages, and underwater world from Tropical freeze used to replace the world made entirely of cart stages in Country Returns.
I hate rocket stages
I used to be a ripple user like you, then I took The Arrow in the knee
