Topic: Swapping MicroSD card in Switch Lite

Hello all. Trying to upgrade my daughter's switch lite from a 32 microsd to a 128 microsd. Have seen all the articles about how to do this and have done it - formatted the new card, copied the Nintendo folder to my computer and then onto the new card. But every single time I put in the new card with the newly copied data I get an error that it can't read the microsd card. I have tried this with two separate new cards and the same effect. Would be grateful for any ideas on this. Thanks very much!

As far as I know, it doesn't work like that, you need to redownload all the games to the new card.

@msarvas Articles? I dont' know if anything has changed for that, or when the articles you used were authored. Nintendo has had to deal with some new security threats circa 2019, 2020, and some things have changed for the Switch. I don't know if the process for transfering to a new card changed in the past few years. Your best, most up-to-date resource would be Nintendo support. You can use the search bar there to find directions for everything. If you get stuck, you can use nintendo support's chat messenger or phone line. Usually their support has been very good (Although around christmas I got a new/temp employee that had to look everything up; Maybe the temp was for holiday time high volume? I don't know. Prior to december 2021, nintendo suppot has been shockingly good - they were an easy recommendation).

I believe these are the directions you're looking for.

@msarvas It's been a while since I transferred mine so my memory might be a little hazy, but don't you need to insert the new (blank) SD into the Switch to format it there first before transferring on PC?
The article @WoomyNNYes links to reads like you should format the new card on a PC, but I'm sure I did mine on Switch

When you insert a microSD card into the console, it is formatted so that it can only be used with that console. If you insert the same microSD card into another console, it must be reformatted (and all data on it will be deleted). Simply copy/pasting data from one microSD card to another won't work.

And all software/updates/DLC will need to be downloaded from scratch.

The only thing you can back-up are photos/videos that you've captured, but they can only be copied to a microSD card after it has been formatted for use on the new console.

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

@dmcc0 Have you transfered to a new micro SD card since 2020 and used a PC to copy and paste the Nintendo folder (containing your games) onto the new card? Or, did you have to redownload all games? I'm not sure we can transfer games to a new micro SD card anymore. (Forgive me everyone, if I'm wrong.)

With the newer security protocols, I was under the impression that Nintendo may no longer allow formatting a card with a PC, as Silly_G mentioned above. I question whether that link (I pasted above) to Nintendo support is up to date (an error on Nintendo's part). When I searched for directions, that was the only set of directions for upgrading to a new card.

However, if I search "how to format micro sd" for the Switch. These are the only directions that are provided; They use the Switch to format the card.

@WoomyNNYes Would've probably been at some point in 2020, but regarding the downloads, I'm not entirely sure - I definitely didn't have all my games downloaded to the old card anyway as it was probably a pretty small card initially and apart from a few 'regulars' I tend to just install what I'm playing at the time and delete once I'm done (or play physical).

I vaguely remember copying the stuff across on a PC, but can't recall if I had to download anything again afterwards. Only thing I am fairly certain of, is that I formatted the card in the Switch before transferring via PC. Seems like that might be the step the OP is missing as they're getting an error rather than just having to re-download games

Many thanks to all, I think this is sorted. I appreciate the help!
