Topic: Some questions about nintendo accounts

I've been trying to find out more about how the whole nintendo account system works but I can't find the info I need so I hoped that someone here might be able to help. I've bought a smash ultimate limited edition to make sure that I'd get one before they ran out, but I don't actually own a Nintendo Switch. I do know someone who has one though so my questions are: if I make an account on their Switch with my nintendo network ID, would I able to register my physical copy of smash to that account to get the piranha plant code, and then later disconnect that account from their Switch, and then at a later point when I get my own Switch, link that account to my Switch and still have my copy of smash registered to that account, or would my smash copy still be linked to their console? Would I be able to use the piranha plant code on their Switch and then transfer it to my Switch, or would it be locked to their console? The official nintendo website isn't very clear on this because they say that when you link an account to a Switch for the first time, that Switch will be registered as the primary console for that account, but the nintendo website says that in order to unregister a Switch from an account, you need to deactivate that Switch and I'm not sure what is meant by this and how this would affect their Switch. Nintendo didn't have this type of account system on the 3DS so I'm a bit lost on how it all works, if anyone would be willing to help I'd greatly appreciate it.

Your problem is very confusing. Why don’t you just wait for the holidays to get a Switch? You are obviously dedicated to getting one if you already ordered a game for it.

@PolarExperience Yeah its pretty complicated, which is why I'm having trouble with it. As far as waiting for the holidays goes, well I can wait as much as I want but if I don't have the money for it then the holidays aren't going to do much for me. Like I said (wrote?) I wanted the limited edition, and if you've been around long enough then you'll maybe remember that when Smash WiiU came out everything got sold out within not much more than a day (which happened again this time), so I figured I'd be the early bird and pre-ordered when it was announced (which is the first time I've actually pre-ordered something but its smash, they've never disappointed). The main reason why I wanted the limited edition wasn't even because I wanted the game, I could and would usually have waited until I got the console first, but it came with the controller and adapter which I (and my siblings) can now use to play games on my PC as well, and since I knew I was going to get the game eventually I figured "why not just get them all at once and save money in the long run". I just looked at how much its costs now and the price has gone up to 140% of what it was before, while the smash controller and adapter are up by 162% and 250% respectively, and even though the game by itself is down to 5/6 what it was when I ordered, if I would have just gotten the controller+adapter at their initial price and then later the game at its current price then I would still have paid more than I have now, and I wouldn't have had the steelbook and the opportunity to get the piranha plant for free.

There are many different alternatives for doing exactly what you did. You only have to register the Piranha Plant code by January 31st, as it’s an early bonus and not a preorder bonus, so you could have bought the game then. There are cheap 3rd party GC controllers that are connect by USB, which you could plug in to your PC, effectively having the real GC experience without buying the adapter. Sure, you would lose the Steelbook, but that’s the only thing you would have to sacrifice.

@PolarExperience You seem to misunderstand, I pre-ordered before they even revealed piranha plant, the reason why I decided go and buy the limited edition was because it was cheaper in the longrun, I had no idea that they were going to do a repeat of mewtwo where you need to register the game early to get a free character, and even then it wouldn't have made a difference because I'm probably not gonna be able to get a Switch before the code expires, so the timing of buying the game isn't even relevant. So no, I wouldn't only have lost the steelbook I would also have had to spend more money, the lack of which being the problem here. As for those cheap 3rd party USB-wired GCN controllers, I currently have 4 3rd party controllers, each one unusable after less than 20 casual uses, spread over a month worth of time, spread over 3 different people (one tried getting another one), produced by 2 different companies (I would also like to point out that non of these actually felt similar to a real GCN controller) so my experience tells me not to go for those. I just want know how the account system works and if it's possible to get and use the code before it expires, without my account, game, or code being locked to their console without being able to unlink them without causing damage to their console or the data on said console.

I’d contact Nintendo and ask. I don’t foresee a problem linking your Nintendo account to friend’s Switch in order to redeem the MyNintendo points and trigger the PP email to you. Once you get the email and enter the code, that ‘purchase’ should be tied to your Nintendo account.
But strange things can happen, so again I’d err on the side of caution and just give support a call.

@JackEatsSparrows Yeah I've been thinking about contacting nintendo, I just wanted know if anyone familiar with the new system could help because I thought "maybe it's something that's really obvious to someone with a Switch". I guess I'll give them a call tomorrow then, I'll post the results in case someone else needs to know.

@Axioms Ok then, if you create the Nintendo Account on your friends console, then unlink it and transfer to your Switch when you get it, it should work. This is only in theory, though, so contacting Nintendo really is the best option, as @JackEatsSparrows said.

I decided to send an e-mail to nintendo customer services as I figured that I'd probably get a clearer answer that way, so here's the Initial contact message by me+reply:
There's something I'm having a little trouble with and I can't figure it out with the nintendo website.
I recently got a new physical copy of Smash bros ultimate but I don't actually own a nintendo Switch, so I can't register it with my My Nintendo account. I do plan on getting one in the future but I don't think I'll be able buy a Switch before the piranha plant bonus code expires. I do know someone who does have a Switch though so I wanted to know: Is it possible to make an account on their Switch with my Nintendo Network ID+My Nintendo account, register my Smash bros ultimate copy, get and redeem the piranha plant code, unlink my account from their console, and then at a later point in the future link my account to my own nintendo Switch, and still have my game and code registered and usable with my console? I'm also worried about what might happen to my friend's console, will their save data be affected by any of this?
Reply:
Thank you for contacting Nintendo UK Customer support regarding your Smash Bros query.

In this case, it is completely possible to link your account to another console, redeem the game, and then unlink the account to link it in another device.

Should you have anymore questions, please let me know
I guess it should be possible then, they didn't comment on the piranha plant code but I assume that, since the game gets transferred along with my account, any dlc linked to that account would probably also get transferred along. I'll try to remember to make another post when I eventually get around to doing it, incase anyone else wants to know for sure. Thanks for trying to help @PolarExperience and @JackEatsSparrows
