Topic: Is There Something Wrong With My Used Animal Crossing Joy-Con?

Hey, guys--I need some help. So, for the past 2 years, I've been incredibly envious of those with the pastel blue and pastel green Joy-Con only available in the Animal Crossing New Horizons Nintendo Switch bundle. Blue and green are my two favorite colors, so I fell in love with the look of these mint-like controllers. Unfortunately, because Nintendo loves to make really infuriating business decisions, it was either buy another Switch for $300 (which wasn't gonna happen, especially with the OLED being a thing now) or do without.

I recently saw some GameStop listings for used Joy-Con in these colors. I don't like buying used products at all, nor am I a fan of doing business with GameStop anymore, but I was desperate. So, my Joy-Con arrive, and there were several paint scuffs on them and other issues with the quality. I wasn't terribly surprised, so I got up with GameStop about it and they sent me a replacement pair. The second pair arrives, and they look even WORSE than the original, lol. Fortunately, they gave me a full refund and told me I could keep both pairs, so I now have 4 ugly Joy-Con I got for free.

This brings me to my big question. Are the Animal Crossing Joy-Con not as pretty in person as they look in the promotional pictures? They looked so gorgeous online with vibrant hues, but both used pairs that arrived to me look like their colors are incredibly washed out. I was very disappointed, but I don't know if this is because they were treated shoddily, or they're just way less pretty than advertised. In certain lighting conditions (very bright), both pairs almost look white, and I couldn't tell you which is which color at times.

I thought these were gonna be the prettiest pair of Joy-Con ever, but I don't even really like these. I think I like the look of my boring grey ones better, which is really saying something. I'm hoping GameStop just gave me crappy controllers and I can find better ones somewhere else, but I don't want to buy a third pair if they look just as underwhelming. If both used pairs are faded, they look exactly the same, which has me doubtful, as that would be awfully coincidental. Unless GameStop keeps all their used peripherals in a storage room with a sun roof that fades them all identically or something.

In addition to having scratched-off sections of paint, they also came with dirty smudges. One of the Joy-Con isn't even a legit Animal Crossing one; when I connect the blue one to my Switch, it reads as purple, meaning the original owner must've had the Zelda-edition pair and replaced one of the covers. The SL/SR buttons are also purple. As someone with OCD, this drives me up the wall, lol.

If need be, I can link to some pictures of mine so someone can let me know whether they look faded. If anyone can help me out here, I would really like to know: 1) Whether you own the Animal Crossing Joy-Con, 2) if they lived up to your expectations, and 3) if the colors still look vibrant, even under different lighting conditions. Sending pics of your own would also be incredibly helpful.

Thank you guys so much for the help. I appreciate it immensely. This may sound like a petty non-issue to a lot of people, I'm not sure, but hopefully y'all understand where I'm coming from here. Probably so, since we're all nerds who like our collections to be official and in mint condition, but I can't help but feel like this is the quentissential example of a first-world problem, lol.

Also, if you happen to know where I can buy a pair in good condition at reasonable price (I know you can get them still in the packaging on eBay, but those are like $100, and I'm not sure if I'm that desperate) or a reputable place to get a new paint job, please let me know. Thanks again, guys!

@Not_Soos I don’t own the animal crossing joy cons, but looking them up, it looks like they’re more of a pastel color. If you could maybe attach an image of them I’d be able to tell if they’ve been washed out or not. Sometimes the images of the joy cons aren’t always what they look like on the promotional images- but even so they shouldn’t be too different than the pic.

As for replacement shells, I looked them up and saw that there were some on AliExpress or eBay that could work. If you don’t want to replace the shell and are good at taking apart the joy cons, you could try painting the outside. If you took the shells off you could either find a color of spray paint or acrylic that you like and paint them, then just putting a coat of clear sealant on top.

Hope this helped! Happy gaming.

My sister owns the Animal Crossing Switch with the joy-con, and they look pretty nice.
Are you sure you didn't get fake ones?

Not_Soos

@SmashBall35

Sorry it took me so long to get back--been trying to figure out how to attach images, lol.

Let me know if you can see this. I still don't know if I'm doing it right. It doesn't load for me but just says "Untitled," but I think it will at least let you view the Twitter URL where I uploaded it. I'll probably go back and delete it off Twitter later.

@TommyTendo Will tag you here too so you can (hopefully) take a look at it and tell me what you think. One of them is definitely fake because when I attach it to the Switch, it reads as being purple instead of pastel blue. As for the other pair, it seems to be legit, but the colors are way less pretty than it looks in the promotional material.

You’re good.

It’s not loading for me, and I can’t click on anything. If you could attach the link that might work.

@Snatcher How does it work differently from sharing an image link from Twitter? Although not spamming my followers with random images with no context is a pretty nice benefit in and of itself, lol.

😂 Glad it showed up though. The blue one does look kinda pale. Even looking at pictures the blue is more of a pastelly color, but it shouldn’t be like that. Some pictures I have seen the blue is really light or more vibrant- and it could have to do with certain lighting But, especially if it turns up as purple, I’m thinking (at least the blue one) could be a fake. Or have a she’ll. The teal one does look pretty similar so I think that one’s ok.

Here’s a pic I found that looks like them:

@SmashBall35 Yeah, that pic looks much more like what I expected to get. I posted a few more under different lighting conditions. My house honestly doesn't have the greatest lighting, but even so, I still don't think it should look this bad.

They actually look even worse in person. In dim light, the blue and green one are almost indistinguishable from one-another, looking closer to grey.

One of them is 100% just a shell because you can see the purple SL/SR buttons. Even comparing them to the image you sent, I still think that teal looks way better than mine. So, I really don't know what I should do from here, lol. I don't really like customizing my peripherals so I would like to leave the official paint intact, but at the same time...I really don't like how these look, lol. I could try to order a third pair from GameStop, but I don't imagine I would have much luck there.

Ohhh. Ok. I was gonna say you can see the purple buttons XD. I wouldn’t buy any from GameStop because of what you’ve gotten- eBay might be an Ok option, but I think you’d be best off painting or replacing the shells unfortunately. Unless you wanted to get a new switch, which I don’t think you’d want to do.

Random question: but do they have joy con drift yet?

It’s too bad though that people sell back fake joy con colors tho…

@SmashBall35 Yeah no, I don't wanna buy another $300 Switch, lol. I may end up trading in my current model in for an OLED at GameStop but not the same model. (Although, if I do that, I could just trade it in with a pair of these crappy AC ones instead of the grey ones they came with--good riddance, lol. Back to the heck hole you came from.) I've looked on eBay, and you can get them brand-new, but you're talking $100+ which is a bit much for me. So, I dunno, I'll think on it. Do you happen to know anywhere online that does a reputable paint job?

I don’t see anything wrong with them. I’m probably just blind though. :/

XD eBays usually pretty pricy when it comes to things like that. I don’t really know any really great places, but looking it up Etsy seems to have some, but there’s a few that get pricey. If you’d rather do it yourself there’s this https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=amz0QxMkz6Q

Or you could duck tape it. It fixes everything… 😉

On the blue one, the SL and SR button are purple.

The green to me looks right, but the blue one looks a bit off.
EDIT: Or... the green looks a bit off as well. I googled animal crossing joy-con on google, and they look more vibrant.
