So, i guess this thread is for handheld consoles. When i got news of the 3ds in 2011, the first thing i thought is, "what will Nintendo invent next?". They've set the bar so high with the 3ds (and 2ds now) that it seems like it will be hard to top it. Will all furure handheld consoles have the 3D ability? Or was that just a one time thing? Nooooooow..... DISCUSS!

Wish list for Nintendo's next handheld:

  • Keep the clamshell, but make the exterior a little more ergonomic (hand-cramping is serious business).
  • 480p display. More than that on a screen that size isn't noticeable anyway, and would only lengthen development cycles and inflate budgets.
  • Two circle pads, for great justice.
  • Keep 3D, but keep it optional.
  • Built in Wifi and 3G.
  • eShop and VC merged with the next console, with an account-based system.
  • Ability to use the handheld as a controller for the next console, and also to stream console games to the handheld (guess that means built in gyroscope, sensor bar, dual bumpers, etc is necessary for that).
  • All games available in either physical or digital copies, from day one.
  • Memory card support that goes up to at least 128gb (or whatever is considered high end by that time).
  • Everything you see here available right from launch, as well as Gamecube and GBA stuff (better get started on that now, Ninty).
  • Backwards compatibility with DS and 3DS, and hopefully 3DS's full library of games will be on eShop by then too (seriously, have a team of dudes doing just this and VC stuff for 8 hours a day).
  • More power, obviously.
  • Miiverse
  • Ability to hook it up to a TV and turn it into a microconsole (PS Vita TV is a cool idea, but wouldn't it be even cooler if the PS Vita itself could do that? 2 in 1!)

This and better battery and enchanced StreetPass support.

A more powerful 3DS like handheld and another home console. What? You expected something else?

Nah, the only big change I see is that future Nintendo might be more... business like in its management. Probably due to the shareholders getting sick of Iwata's failings and firing him for someone only interested in the monetary side. So the new consoles might not have any 'gimmicks' at all and just be traditional games consoles, and the already somewhat overdone Mario and Pokemon series might end up even more overdone with constant games.

With the Oculus Rift and the right games on the Wii U, that might just be a likely possibility. But of course it won't be a true VB but its would be close.

If you look at the track record the history of the portables goes loosely like this;
GameBoy/color= NES
GBA= SNES
DS= N64
3DS= Gamecube.

So realistically the next portable will be somewhere in the Wii/WiiU range. Probably closer to the WiiU since it will still be supported when the next portable arrives.

There are some givens to be included in the system. Backwards Compatibility (though probably just for 3DS games), Streetpass, Miiverse (since its coming to the 3DS, VC/Eshop (but don't expect the system to be flooded with GC/GBA games. for whatever reason Nintendo is not interested in making a retro system, but a system with some retro in it. And even if they do it wont be out all at once.), account system, and whatever bells and whistles they already have.

After that it seems up in the air to what they can do. They toyed with the idea of a portable as a second controller with the GBA. I can see them going back to it in connection with the WiiU. But I think if they do that the clamshell might be gone. To me it might be a distraction looking at 3 screens total. between the two. I could see the next DS have a pop out second screen. Something you can push in when not needed. Nintendo is known for making products that last. So I think they can pull it off and make it durable.

So I think it will be a smaller version of a WiiU pad with a pop out screen. I'd love to see the next Wii come with a attached charging cradle. Or two. Imagine if the next WiiU controler IS the next DS. Packaged together like how PS4 and Vita are in some bundles. Only totally in synch and not shoehorned in. Each individual DS could be second or third controllers for it.
