I am motivated by a combination of quality and price. I tend to buy a lot of first party Nintendo games, and tend to lose interest in a particular system when Nintendo shifts their focus onto a new system.
How about you?
Another thing - I am concerned by the growing lack of quality and reviewer/consumer expectation with download games, so I have sworn them off altogether,,,
I mostly buy what I'm familiar with, like Mario, Kirby, Megaman, Zelda, etcetera, and very rare do I venture out of this realm of gaming.
There were a few occasions in which I tried a different type of game, though, one being Scribblenauts. I got it because of the gimmick they were advertising. Type a word and the object will appear! That's awesome!
Another was Kingdom Hearts. At first, I was very skeptical, saying things like, "Mickey Mouse and Donald and Goofy aren't supposed to be serious and fighting evil!" Eventually through watching my friends play it I decided to by 386/2 days (I think it's called).
I don't know what possessed me to try out Pokemon Emerald as a rom. I thought Giving Hits/Getting Hits/Giving Hits/Getting Hits was stupid at the time, and I don't even know why I've grown to like it. I actually love it now.
My last one was Golden Sun: Dark Dawn. I thought, well, I like pokemon, so this should just be a simplier version, right? I got it on a whim and never regretted it. It's an amazing game.
I'm becoming dangerously close to venturing out again very soon, with Okamiden. Brush strokes=Sword strikes seems like a great idea, I like the puppy god thing, and the graphics look amazing for the DS.
The burning passion within my heart drives me to even greater video gamical heights.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

Still the best wii game by far if Mario started shooting people maybe they'd be worth looking into, really the only argument against halo being the best wii game is that it doesn't exist which is a pretty flimsy argument.
Halo is owned by MS - it is MS first party even though Bungie is no longer under contract to develope the games
we're talking about the Wii version of Halo, man — on a Nintendo system it's totally 3rd party :3

Honestly, a franchise with a great reputation goes the longest way in my book when motivating to buy a game (or merch, etc.). Case in point: The Legend of Zelda franchise has yet to actually make nothing less than great games (And more often then not, masterpieces that define a generation). Of course I'm talking about when it's Nintendo behind the series, not Phillips or Capcom. Because of this reputation, I've boughten every Zelda game on day one since Ocarina of Time.
I like games that I can put chocolate spread on the back of and eat.
I have a pretty poor eBay reseller rating
