If I start watching a movie and it sucks 30 minutes in, I'm probably going to turn it off. If it got better later, too bad for me I guess. There's no shortage of other options.

The best comparison to WRPGs is Lord of the Rings - both the movie and the books - because that's the style of fantasy most WRPGs try and emulate. And if the first 30 minutes of The Fellowship of the Ring (or the first 100 pages of the book) genuinely "drew you in," then wow. I've actually met someone that enjoyed that stupid hobbiton stuff.

Epic fantasy takes time to build - if it was all out excitement from the get-go, it couldn't possibly be epic - too much too quickly. So it needs to build over time, and it needs to build a world, rather than a few characters. The reason Dragon Age is fulfilling is not because of the characters you play, but the backstory, the politics, the history and engaging with believable NPCs that have motivations of their own.

JRPGs are not epic in scope, typically - they tend to be character driven, rather than world-building exercises. So JRPG developers can afford to be more focused and more "exciting" to watch.

Chrono Trigger. I'm not a big RPG guy, but that game is just absolutely flawless.
