@Ralizah I feel like the 3D Models in PLA and SV were the first time it felt right for pokemon to be in 3D. The way they were animated and reacted felt like they did more than just stand in place and feel off. That- and the realistic texture work that SV used for the Pokemon is something I don't think I can go back from. It helps contrast against the rounded edges that Gen 8 introduced with the designs, making them less toy-like.

Also yeah, having two regions was awesome for Gen 2- but it came at the expense of making Johto interesting. There's definitely a reason why we'll never get two regions in one game again.

Maybe not quality, but we are getting a ton of variety in the current generation with Pokemon Arceus, Brilliant Diamond, Pokemon Go, New Pokemon Snap, pokemon unite, S/V, detective pikachu, mystery dungeon, pokemon sleep, etc.

Pokemon Quest... what even is Pokemon Quest.

@Ralizah @VoidofLight As a lover of GSC/HGSS, I must say that Johto being an extension is part of the charm. I really like how cohesive Johto and Kanto are as regions and how, despite the former being an extension of the latter, it manages to build its own identity rooted in the more traditional / rural parts of their Japan inspiration, and does so in a way that complements the more urban/modern Kanto. I also feel like it was the best thing to do at this point in the series - build on the existing region, lore and Pokedex, rather than begin the cycle of creating "new" (but largely formulaic) regions that they've been stuck in since the mid 00s.

It's why I'd like to see them do more follow-up/direct sequel-type games. B2W2 was an admirable effort at this - I really appreciated how that allowed us to see Unova from a while new perspective, and how it reintroduced a lot of beloved Pokemon that were missing from BW. A shame that the layout of Unova was so linear to begin with though. I don't think it lended itself to a revisiting nearly as much as Kanto with its layout.

While we're at it, here's my personal ranking of Pokemon games (only considering the "best" version of each region imo) :

HGSS = RSE > Pt > FRLG > BW > SV > XY = SwSh > SM

Is it really bad that I kinda like the Pokemon Rumble games? Not that they are masterpieces or anything, far from that, but I don’t find them extremely bad and abysmal like a lot of other people and reviewing outlets make them out to be. I find the Rumble games to be pretty decent beat em’ up spin-offs, and I absolutely loved playing Rumble World on the 3DS whenever I was bored and needed something small to entertain myself. There was also a mobile app they had for it that I also did like too. I don’t know, I just really liked the Rumble games a lot and probably like them way more than some because it was my first introduction to beat em’ up games.

I do not like Persona 5 royal. lol, i know blasphemous. And I LOVE JRPGS, trust me. Literally my favorite genre and most played.

I work at a high school and I'm sick of hearing about high school problems. So the last thing I ever want to do is be in a high school sim lmao. Banger music though!

Can I just say that out of all the unpopular opinion forums I’ve seen, that this is honestly just the best one. Like whenever Reddit has one on a subreddit they aren’t really unpopular because everyone and their mother upvotes it and agrees, like how it is then unpopular if everyone is agreeing with you? It’s a warm take or sorta hot.

So yeah thank you guys for bringing actual unpopular opinions on here lol.

@Snatcher To be fair, since we don't have upvotes here it's hard to tell.

Can't wait for Nintendolife to add upvotes.

@VoidofLight They should add sideways and diagonal votes instead.

@FishyS For real. How am I supposed to keep track of what opinions are good and what opinions should be shunned? (For all intents and purposes this is just a joke)

@FishyS lol this is very true, maybe that actually helps.

Reddit unpopular opinions are just popular opinion farmed for upvotes. Such unpopular opinions such as:

I emulate my games instead of playing them on original hardware.
and
insert popular game is actually not good/overrated.

Very daring comments.

@ShonenJump121 I have curiously checked out those Reddit questions for fun, and what you say is true. A lot of those popular opinions are kind of disguised as being “unpopular,” and usually those unpopular opinion game questions people ask on Reddit get a ton of upvotes. Plus, I do think it could also be people afraid of getting downvoted and actually sharing unpopular opinions, because unlike the forums on here and some other sites, the way some Reddit users treat opinions and downvotes is awful, plus your opinion being unpopular and disliked is actually way more visible on there unlike here where you instead write a reply to an unpopular opinion on a forum explaining why you disagree with the opinion instead of simply downvoting it.

I am way more comfortable sharing unpopular opinions on NL or any other of their sister sites because the forums are vastly different than Reddit’s forums (mostly from the fact a lot of the people on the NL forums are kinder and there isn’t a lot of people who participate in them unlike Reddit, which likely has a bigger userbase than NL)

It seems to me that many times people will say something unpopular just to get a rile out of people, but they may not actually be the person's thoughts on something. Which can make things even more difficult.

I'm sure if I said on the retro gaming sub that I actually don't care too much for the NES, I would get downvoted into oblivion. Even though N64/PS1 games have aged worse due to being the introduction of 3D I still find that charming more than anything so I usually do not mind it.

ShonenJump121

@ShonenJump121 Oh, I feel that way too with some of the opinions I have read on Reddit. Sometimes it’s like “I think [popular game] is bad” but sometimes it feels like some people only say it’s bad because it’s popular and all over the place and they might find it annoying, and it could be that they haven’t even played the game at all! I have seen opinions that are like that on Reddit. I think that it’s good to play the game you are giving the unpopular or popular opinion of, since the opinion is more sincere that way and not taken from someone else just cuz it was popular, but of course some people can spout opinions just to get people worked up. I believe I have come across those troll-y people on the gaming Reddit a few times.

Oh yeah, I do kind of like the charm that those N64/PS1 era games do give off and I like those a lot, usually I like those way more than NES and SNES games despite how those have aged better than the older 3D games, usually cuz I think N64/PS1 games have way more memorability and charm. Sometimes on Reddit popular opinions and ONLY popular opinions are allowed in certain communities, and if you express an unpopular opinion that isn’t common, everyone will just downvote your comment heavily. Feels like that sometimes from what posts I’ve read on various gaming Reddit communities.

I understand that this is a Nintendo forum, but I do think the NES is slightly overrated. I think the Master System doesn't get enough love these days. Seems like people are allowed to say slightly bad things about the N64 like the library and the controller, but any bad talk about the NES is blasphemous.

Feels like to me that you must like the NES as a mandatory of liking older games, or something.

@ShonenJump121 I usually don’t hear a lot of people express a lot of dislike toward the NES online, and I didn’t even know some people reacted that way if you expressed an unpopular opinion on the NES or found it overrated! I thought that people reacted that way if someone said “I find the N64 overrated” cuz I think I have seen people say they don’t like the N64 or any of its games (though I’ve seen a dislike more toward its platformer games) and then getting downvoted excessively for it, but I guess I may have seen it less cuz even some of the people that love the N64 are aware that some of the most popular and iconic games on there haven’t aged amazingly and are fine with slight criticisms on it. I only think it’s if you are overly negative on the N64 that people on gaming forums go crazy and get angry.

I don’t think that liking the NES is mandatory for liking other older games. I do like some NES games, but it’s more of Nintendo’s games, and I’ve found that some of the ones I have played in recent times on the Xbox via Rare Replay aren’t amazing, and the classic console that interests me the least is the NES in my opinion, I gravitate more toward N64 games instead and sometimes SNES games. I don’t think it is mandatory to like an iconic classic video game console or classic games in order to like other stuff, you can really just enjoy any gaming console or game you like, even if some random people on Reddit give you a list of 100 reasons why you are wrong for liking an underrated and more niche game series or console over a more popular and well-known game series or console. It makes me disappointed that some gaming communities on other sites like Reddit can be such echo chambers and intolerant of other opinions people want to share and explain.

@Pastellioli I've found that since Nintendo is a more bigger and more prevalent brand, that tends to happen far more often where people are less likely to value other people's opinions. The audience is larger; there is a higher chance of that happening.

Communities of failed consoles such as the Vita and the Sega Saturn don't seem to act anything like the Wii U community, from experience. The former seem aware that their console is flawed and has many problems, while the latter seem to think that the Wii U was one of the best consoles Nintendo's ever made.

Whether that's true or not is up to someone else's own opinion, but I maybe there is something to the many, many posts I see about how underrated the Wii U was as a console. Pointing out any flaws usually gets you down voted for some reason. I don't know why, but its just some sort of Nintendo thing.

I'm going to throw down a pretty unique take: the Joy-Con directional buttons aren't really that bad. In fact I daresay it's one of my favorite d-pads ever.
