Topic: Unofficial controllers being sold as original!!

Morning all.
I wanted to see if anyone else has had the issue of purchasing a pro controller online from sites like eBay and received a third party fake instead of the real deal?

This happened to me and the seller insisted this was original when it clearly wasn’t. He also sells lots daily and people are leaving positive comments!!! Beware, if the price is to good to be true that’s because it is.

I made a video for people to use incase they sourced a pro controller anywhere else.

Please let me know your experience.

Thanks

Well worth posting stuff like this - I'd like to get some of the non-black Pro Controller variants but think I've missed the boat as the only places I can find them are third party sellers and less than reputable sites - it's good to know that there are some clear ways to differentiate. Thanks!

@mr_benn yeh the price tag for some of these limited edition controllers are insane. It’s because of the price you have to be cautious with the product you are receiving. Thanks for the comment.

@Dmacmorris I don't really use Ebay much, but I am pretty sure they have a system for reporting fraud. I could be wrong though. Or maybe they used to have something like that and don't anymore?

@Heavyarms55 yes eBay does have this buyer protection however I need to wait till the 9th of April for them to step in and evaluate the evidence which is a frustrating time delay. However will post the outcome.

Had a response from the seller, still awaiting eBay to step in.
”Hello, our products are delivered by regular suppliers, and the goods are genuine. We can guarantee this. have you used the product, please send a photo of the product to us, so that we can review the return application for you, please ensure that the packaging of the product is complete, thank you”

will keep this updated here.

i stopped using eBay when i brought a Region 1 DVD (the show never got a UK release) that was listed as a proper, original one but what i got was a data disc with a MP4 on it (this was before i found i could import from america on Amazon)

the entire site is full of "Scumbag sellers" and "scalpers" that sadly never get the comeuppance they deserve, i tend to stick to actual retailers when buying my products now, yeah maybe i pay a bit more but at least i know i'm getting a authentic product

@FullbringIchigo you do make a solid point. I have been put off so much over the years but because of this COVID-19 stuff I thought “What’s the worst the could happen”. I work with Apple for a living and see a lot of customers that purchase macs and phones from eBay and when inspecting some of them you think who could be vile enough to sell that to someone.

Fakes are why I tend to avoid most eBay and Amazon third party sellers. Not so much with controllers (I didn't even know those could be faked), but I remember GBA cartridges. If I do buy online, I'm usually careful and pay attention to the signs. Example, if the price is too low, it's too good to be true. I remember buying Puyo Pop for GBA on Amazon a few years back, thankfully got an authentic copy.

I did get a Pro Controller recently, but that was purchased from Target's own website. Given I can't go to a store to buy one because of obvious reasons, I decided to order one, and surely enough it was genuine. Plus I got a discount on it, it was $62, instead of $70. Sometimes store websites will have sales the stores themselves don't have.

@Sunsy omg yeh I remember GBA games would be copied all the time!!!. Me and my brother have all boxed versions of the Pokemon games and grateful they where all store bought. I think Pokemon fire red and soul silver are some of the most counterfeit versions out there. You do make strong points about being careful and they should always be followed however so many of us get trigger fingered because it’s cheap.

@DAHstroy you and the million others mate. Am normally on point with these things and can’t believe it caught me out.

@Dmacmorris Indeed. Another thing I do is look into the seller. Read customer experiences, see if they have a website or a Facebook profile, even pictures they took themselves. I always found those tips helpful with fake GBA carts, it could work for fake accessories as well. This thread is the first time I heard of fake accessories.

Unofficial controllers do exist, but sometimes they're just unlicensed third party ones. I remember finding a PDP Afterglow version of the Wii U Pro Controller. It's unofficial and unlicensed, but not trying to pass off as an official Nintendo made one.

Evening all, quick update. Officially have returned the controller to seller and now awaiting them to do a “check over the item”. Am pretty sure they are going to try and find some way out of a refund. Will keep use all posted. However interested to see what ebay says about something be sold as genuine when indeed fake. I think they may be an account block 🤷‍♂️
