Has anybody picked up the IDW #1 Issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. There's some pretty interesting stuff going on there.

No, I have not. Should I? How interesting is it?

They are changing the origins story. I don't want to say anything other than that.

Mayhem

Yeah, I've picked up issue #1 of the IDW series. Gonna give it some more issues before I can decide if I like where they are going with the origins. All the base parts are in place mind you...

As for TMNT in general, I started with the original b/w comics in the late 80s after a kid in my year brought the first graphic novel to school to show us. Never liked the cartoon from that moment onwards, it was these b/w issues all the way. Thankfully the comic shop near school got copies in for me to buy. In terms of my collection, I have first print of every issue released, yes even the very first from 1984, and some of the more interesting stuff is in my Flickr set...

Lie with passion and be forever damned...

That's awesome, Mayhem! The original b/w comics are going to be rereleased in collections starting next month and I'm looking forward to picking them up. I got started with the original cartoon when I was about 4 or 5 and when dad would see the comic (Archie) in a store he would pick it up for me, places here never sold comics regularly though.

I think I liked the new comic, its hard to tell right now. One thing did make me say wtf, but I'm not gonna spoil anything for anyone. I liked the new foe in it though.

Anyone have this? Been thinking about picking it up and wanted to know what you guys thought of the whole collection? Looks pretty sweet, love the pizza box case and pizza looking DVD's.

Also, have all the animated seasons been released? It would be great to have a box collection.

@Ryno: All of the cartoon series except for the last season is released on DVD. I doubt you will ever see a box collection of them all together though. And most of the comic books were in color. The early ones were in b/w.

Has any TMNT fan got this yet which released this month?

It's the same origin story... (for the original comics). Though April is different. Better then the 90's Cartoon, Fast Forward and Back to the Sewers for me. The theme song, I don't like rap or hip hop but recently watching Samurai Shamploo I like this.

It's a bit of the comic combined with the 90's cartoon.

In the comic Splinter was originally a pet rat, and Hamato Yoshi was a separate character (they are the same here). In the cartoon Splinter was a human. The Utroms are the name of the alien race in the comic, and in the cartoon there was a character named Krang from Dimension >< (where here the alien race is the Kraang).

Also the ending of the theme looks like the cover on the first issue.

I've recently been rediscovering my love of Ninja Turtles. Plan on rewatching the original cartoon, the movies, the live action series, and the 2003 cartoon. Also, has anyone seen the new cartoon? I've been thoroughly enjoying it so far! And would love to hear some other thoughts on it!

Also want to get into the comics, as I only ever read a couple of them back when I was a kid.

KaiserGX

Like I was saying, I like this series and combining the comics (and 2003 show) with what I liked from the original cartoons. I am not blinded by nostalgia. I like the art style, the voices, the personalities some of the mutant I have seen so far (especially Spiderbytes). They act a bit more like teenagers without them feeling annoying or like they are all the same character. That's what I felt about the original cartoon (which is few). You just can't forget classics like Baxter Stockman (black), Utroms, Fugitoid, Karai (maybe Triceratons). It hurted me inside when the 2003 cartoon was out, that "they ruined my childhood", or "what have they done to Ninja Turtles!" when these were the original characters and stories all along. If anything, "what have they done?!" is what should have been said for the cartoon. One thing I miss but isn't needed was when they all had red bandannas.

Posting in this thread here which is the thread I must say the thing I was going to say on this thread.

I watched about half an episode the other day of the new series and yep its just like Nick to get their greedy corporate hands on something good and mess it all up. I dont like the fact that they made April younger and the art style yuck.

Thankfully if I want some real Ninja Turtles cartoons all I have to do is pop in one of the original TMNT seasons and I am all set.

The original cartoon is just like Playmates Toys to get their greedy corporate hands on something good and mess it all up. I don't like the fact that they made April a news reporter, got rid of classic characters, made the Shredder a joke, gave all the turtles the same personality, basically had no plot and the art style yuck.

Thankfully if I want some real Ninja Turtles, all I have to do is read the original Mirage comics, or pop in the TMNT 2003 seasons, or pretty much any other incarnation and I am all set.

To this day Laird makes no bones about how unhappy he is with many aspects of the “softened” Turtles. In March 2012, Laird said this on his blog:

“…had I (again, speaking solely for myself and not for Kevin) been making the key creative decisions for that first animated series, it would have been VERY different. Among other things, there would likely have been no moronic henchmen like Bebop and Rocksteady. The Shredder would have been seriously malevolent. April would not have been a reporter and constantly need to be rescued by the Turtles. The Turtles would not have been so ridiculously obsessed with pizza, and the Shredder would not have had as one of his businesses a restaurant called ‘Ninja Pizza’…And the show would not have had a joke or gag every five seconds.”

1. Please don't mock me. If you have something useful to contribute than by all means contribute but don't post just to mock it makes you look like an ass.

2. The series came out before the Playmates figures and you might want to check cause Playmates are making this series figures as well So I guess this series would be both Nickelodeon and Playmates greedy corporate hands according to you.

3. The Turtles did have different personalities in the original series if you dont see that then you obvious have not seen the series at all or if you did you need to watch it better.

4. Than go ahead and read your comics, or watch you precious 2003 series instead of wasting the time of mocking people on a forum.

The show was made to basically sell the Playmates figures. They wanted to test the waters before starting mass production.

The original Mirage comic book really wasn’t made for youngsters. The Turtles diced up enemies while spouting the occasional curse word, and one of the Turtles’ allies was hockey mask-wearing vigilante Casey Jones, who beat down even low-level crooks with baseball bats and hockey sticks. But when Playmates Toys expressed interest in producing TMNT action figures in 1986 (we’ll get to those), the comic’s PG-13 attitude wouldn’t fit Playmates’ 4-8 year old target audience. In addition, part of Playmates’ marketing was an animated cartoon, which had to pass television censors. So to make the Turtles viable for the younger set, the Turtles had to soften up.

So they aired the show a couple times till it caught on. Only then would they go into mass production. The difference now is the show is not solely a marketing advertisement to sell the merchandise. Nick is very respectful of the source material. I would say it's basically a bit of both. The cartoon was a quick, cash-in. The creators had to give up a lot of their ideas and freedom to basically make TMNT famous. In the end I am glad they did, but the cartoon, is not the holy grail we remember. I loved the Ninja Turtles in my childhood, I saw the cartoon, watched all the movies, and games. But in reality that cartoon is the blacksheep to the whole franchise. It was a slice of something much better.

Compared to the original stories, all the turtles have about the same personalty. Not trying to rain on people's parades or step on toes, and I apologize, and I went a bit overboard. These are people's childhoods we are talking about. But I have seen the original cartoon numerous times. I've seen all off each series about maybe 3 times (not the Japanese Heroes Turtles though). All I can see it now is a marketing plow for the toys. The writing, plot, character designs are sub par.

The original series (comic) was still funny as well. It just didn't make a joke every 5 seconds. There were parts were you could take it seriously.
