Oh yeah, I’m real messed up in the head, I’m going to go shoot up a school full of kids and eat their still, beating hearts

I think this kid got what's coming to him if he can idly joke about such things.

Old news, yet it still ticks me off.

He said some stupid crap, he does not deserve 8 years for saying stupid crap when people like Casey Anthony are free. A slap on the wrist or some community service is more then enough to make this kid learn. Also, [bleeped content is NOT less appropriate than scatological humor] the stalker Canadian lady that called the cops.

This happened in Texas. Surprised he's not facing a life sentence. lol

Anyways there's a small chance they're actually going through with this. They're probably using him as an example, more than anything. Freedom of speech doesn't allow threats, and there's a gray area in determining how much someone is joking.

Here it was pretty evident he was joking, so he will very likely be fine ('fine' meaning not 8 years, he will likely be punished somehow).

Is 8 years of prison an appropriate response for saying some stupid bullcrap? Some community service to make sure he doesn't do it again and a mental evaluation, maybe. 8 freaking years of his life gone, hell to the no.

I'm in high school, and kids make tasteless jokes all the time akin to "I'm gonna shoot/rape/knife someone", not to the extent of murdering children but still. Are they funny? HELL NO. Do these people deserve to go to jail for 8 years? HELL NO.

I agree that it is a stupid thing to say online but does it justify spending 8 years in jail while other REAL criminals spend less time?

Haha, yeah. Just keep telling yourself that when you've arrested a five year-old for saying "BANG!" while playing with his toy gun.

If it makes people realize that saying terrible things like that isn't good, and makes people think before they speak, then yes, it's worth it. I'd even say it's it's a bit generous.

I understand that what he said is very inappropriate and messed up after "certain events" that happened months ago. But he never actually did commit a crime. And 8 years seems extremely harsh.

sorry, mickey: argumentum absurdum.

this young man is incredibly stupid to think a 'jk' and/ or 'lol' is enough to get a pass for saying what he did. i agree the potential sentence is too long, but i think it will be reduced and is only for publicity and letting people know this sort of thing is not going to fly under the radar.

Yeah I'm not in favor of ruining someone's life over a facebook comment.

Teens say stupid things all the time. Facebook just created an easy avenue for this case to be reported. I can see if he had indicated he was serious, but he even said he was joking. Making a tasteless joke is not a crime, especially one that deserves to ruin his life.

People can realize that without, you know, forcing a minor to go to jail for almost a decade of his life. He's a kid, kids say stupid crap all the time. He can live with community service. Generous my burro, there's no reason to force a kid to live in the trauma of a jail cell for 8 years for making the most empty threat possible.

Overall I felt that a couple days-a week in jail would be fine but 8 years is just too much for such a silly comment that is not as bad as OTHER comments on the internet. Also don't forget the petition up there. Just spreading the word.

You're an even bigger sociopath than I am on issues like this. If such free speech impeding laws as you speak of were ever put in place especially in a country like the US, 99% of the population would be behind bars.

Humor and sarcasm are tasteless at their roots; no amount of jail time or therapy can correct this problem because there isn't a problem to begin with. Should he have said something like that? Probably not. Should he have made his sarcasm more clear? Most likely. Does he deserve 8 years of jail time? No!

If we operate by your logic, and judging by your post history, you'd be in jail anywhere between 2-7 years, @LJM would be in jail for 8-20 years, and I'd be in jail for more lifetimes than Nowi and Gandalf fused into one.

yet everyone would be screaming for his blood if he pulled another Newtown. how are the authorities to know he is 'jk'?

again, i seriously doubt he will get 8 yrs in jail/prison. the sentence will be reduced. he may do some time, but a more reasonable amount. why aren't any of you upset that he would think what he said was funny?

hey guys, do us a favor and stop with the profanity, please — we do understand it's a touchy sort of topic, but that doesn't give you all carte blanche to haul off and let fly. :/

that said, I do agree with k8sMum: I'm sure the media and local townsfolk would be furious had the kid been serious, it's easy enough for him to complain now that he was just kidding when he's been caught by the authorities. he'll get a much lighter sentence than the media is letting on (if anything — he could wind up with just probation and time served, y'know) and that'll be that.

And they likely won't. I know if I had my way, they'd be going through with it, but then again, that's why I'm not a judge. As others have pointed out, this'll be mostly publicity, and any actual punishment he gets will likely be less severe. I still like the idea of people actually being forced to think before they speak, though. Just because stupid kids saying stupid things all the time shouldn't be an accectable thing in my eyes.

@theblackdragon I agree and we don't need anyone else on the internet being arrested for their comments xD

That's largely irrelevant. People say classless jokes all the time, or humorously imply they're going to break some sort of law, and its generally overlooked. I'd rather not live in a politically correct (or even more so..) society where everything gets taken 100% literally.

Think he's screwed up in the head? Awesome, send him to therapy. But he didn't do anything to warrant actual prison time.
