T3 are reporting rumours from Let’s Go Digital about the possibility of a new handheld from Sony to co incide with the release of the PS5. Bow of course this. Oils be and probably is humdrum but how would this affect Nintendo and the Switch?
If it was a seperate handheld then I can’t see it working as you would be looking at a grand just to buy both. But the possibility to play PS5 games on the go may tempt some?
I’m a firm Nintendo player and will be sticking with Switch when then next gen hit in 2020.
What are others thoughts? Is a PS5 handheld possible?

Not happening.

A handheld with the ability to play PS5 games probably isn't even possible with today's technology.

The only way you'll get a portable PS5 is if the PS5 itself was a hybrid, like Switch, but all signs point toward it being a traditional power console (with emphasis on the word "power;" the thing is supposedly going to be quite beefy).

Moreover, Sony has demonstrated that, like Nintendo, they just don't have the ability to simultaneously keep two systems afloat at a time anymore. Nintendo's most profitable systems were their handhelds, so they went all in on a hybrid that could be either home console or handheld; Sony is the master of the home console, so, obviously, they're going all in on a home console.

What I do expect is that Sony might try pushing remote play on smart devices as they 'answer' to the appealing versatility of the Switch. Of course, that's dependent on being able to stream games, which automatically limits it for the majority of people not living in big cities with constant access to high-speed internet.

@jarvismp Anything is possible, but I don’t think Sony would want to fragment first-party releases after the Vita. It also seems like they are going to push even further with VR next gen, since the PS5 is going to be a much more capable machine. They might look into doing something with streaming but managing a software lineup for the PS5, PSVR, and separate handheld is a lot to handle. Looking at sales of the Switch also confirms that households often have two consoles at the ready, so the Switch is the gamers handheld of choice for the current gen.

Again though- not totally counting it out.

I don't think that's happening. As @Ralizah said, I'd more so expect a push into improved Remote Play/PS Now via mobile devices. Heck I'd even expect them to come out with a 1st party phone controller like Microsoft is doing. I think the days of a PlayStation Portable are gone for good.

Is it revealing that I initially thought this thread was a new rumour about Persona 5 Portable? I then tried to work out if the post was trying to draw a line about a new Sony handheld meaning we would get a Persona 5 Portable...

Sony's handhelds were both excellent machines, but the Vita was badly let down by its manufacturer. Given that treatment, I can't see Sony having another crack. Which, although I'm on Team Switch, I see as a shame. A little competition is healthy.

Sony never really loved their own handhelds. PSP was a great device, but deeply flawed, was a me-too device, was always under-supported by Sony, floated mostly on the myriad of Japanese 3rd parties that wanted handheld games that were better than what a GBA could do, and was generally hated by Sony after the battery exploit on PSP2000 was opened. Vita was barely a half-hearted attempt. They thought they could crush 3DS and iOS, they didn't, and as soon as they had a PS4 to announce, months later, they basically forgot the thing existed at any other point.

They may have some Switch envy, but there's no reason to think a PSP3 would ever be a thing. They built nice hardware that they didn't actually ever want to sell or support.

I'm not buying into the rumour, but here's a reason: https://metro.co.uk/2019/11/11/ps5-will-use-cartridges-reveal...

PS5 portable will not happening.
It possible to have more power than PS4 Pro but it will cost more than $ 700.
The possibility that can be happen is like Wii U style (Remote play and you still have to turn on the console) or like Microsoft's planning.

But the most important is building a lot diversity of games library like 3DS and Switch. PSP games in my opinion wasn't good enough due too many mainstream type games for hardcore / typical male player such as soccer games, Realistic racing, Shooter, Action games with intense violences, etc. In contrast with PS vita that i have no suitable games at all for me due too many Tokimeki style games for Japanese version, too many mainstream games type for hardcore player.

@Anti-Matter PSP & Vita libraries were supported primarily by JRPGs and niche Japanese games overall. Those would be the last platforms anyone would buy for "hardcore/western/realistic" games. It briefly flirted with such games just as a lot of companies do on Nintendo handhelds early on, and then bailed away from it rapidly.

@NEStalgia don't even try man, I think we've learned once he's made up his mind about something, nothings going to change it... Even facts lol.

I love my PSP and PS Vita, but I feel as though Sony has lost all interest in handheld gaming since the PS Vita disappointed Sony shareholders.

I don't think there's much point in speculating. As nice as PSP and Vita were, Sony didn't takeover the portable market and now they are out of it. Sony and Nintendo both has shown that trying to manage two different consoles, in different markets is very difficult and nigh impossible now as they aren't only competing with each other, but billions of other mobile devices.
Nintendo, after actually pulling it off for many years, had to stop and combine their lines into one with the Switch. This has worked for them and they carved out their out niche. The hybrid path is not one Sony is likely to take. They very much play the spec war and there's far too many compromises in specs to make such a system. Nintendo is willing to make those sacrifices, Sony isn't; judging from their track record. If, beyond all odds they did make and release portable able to play PS5 games, it would be a monster, with a monster of a price tag to go along with it.

They can't write Microsoft off just yet lol. Reckon this is more a plan B. If they lose the next gen race (which looks doubtful, but you never know) then they will probably shift focus and take on the small guy (Nintendo). Sony are pretty reactionary like that with their strategy (shame not their innovation).

Portable PS5? No way. PS5 is slated to be far too demanding to be made portable with current tech at a feasible price. Portable streaming device from Sony? That might happen. Since streaming is the new buzz word now that people have gotten over the VR hype.

.....The Playstation Switch.

...Honestly, I could actually see Sony doing this. So I wouldn't be surprised if they actually did a hybrid.

Sony's portables are perfect examples that your system is going nowhere if you don't support it. Of course Sony won't have the resources for supporting two systems at once if they're taking PS5 seriously so dedicated handheld is completely out of the question. Don't think technology is advanced enough for a hybrid PS5 but I could see some kind of improved Remote Play so you can play PS5 games on your smartphones.

Wouldn't surprise me a bit. Nintendo creates Snes, Original playstation controller design heavily copies the snes controller. Nintendo creates n64 rumble pack, Playstation controllers starts being made with vibration function. Nintendo creates hybrid home console that doubles as a handheld. Sony releases PS5 with portable mode. You know it'll happen.

Unless of course the tragic spanking the Vita got swore them off of portables for all eternity. In all honesty though who wants to play PS5 on a little portable screen? Heck i don't even play switch in handheld mode for that very reason. It's just too damn small and i have a nice big TV anyway.

@Octane The PSP was the worst selling system of its gen during the peak of consoles market. I doubt we'll reach that peak again especially since the japanese market collapsed.
