Bunkerneath

@Shantephan In regards to Coco, Not really as it kinda looks like a rip off of "Book of the Dead"

Here is the Avengers Infinity War trailer, and it's awesome!

@Bunkerneath Coco may look a lot like Book of the Dead, but it's a completely different story. The only thing they have in common is a Mexican holiday.

@Yachtephan Ah ok
On another note, that trailer looks pretty amazing to be fair

For me, the wait for this trailer was harder than the wait for the Switch reveal, but it's finally here! My hype levels are exceeding maximum capacity. My only gripe with the trailer is no Hawkeye or Nebula.

PokeMario

Yachtephan

@PokeMario Well, Hawkeye and Nebula have always been side characters. No Ant-Man was the most surprising to me.

So ehm, the trailer for the trailer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has been released and apparently dinosaurs aren't enough of a threat. We need to have an active volcano as well to build suspension. I'm not getting my hopes up for this one guys. What about you?

I saw Star Wars: The Last Jedi today and, without giving away any spoiler, I can say it was a glorious movie experience! So many things done right, so very few disappointments, a lot of scenes that left me stunned, and the movie as a whole left me very satisfied.
Better than The Force Awakens (which I am a big fan of), better than Rogue One (which I thought was just OK) and a thousand times better than the prequels (obviously).

@Ralizah I enjoyed reading your post so much, I felt compelled to find a gif to represent my expression:

I especially agree with your comment with regards to the use of The Force. It felt like it was used to such a sparingly extent that when you do see something come of it, it feels sacred and mythical as you said so yourself. And seeing The Force in its earnest during the samurai-esque battle between Kylo Ren and Luke Skywalker made it all the more fascinating and exciting to witness!

@Peek-a-boo I really liked this insight of yours: "Kylo Ren’s struggle to not go to the light in The Force Awakens echoes Rey's issue with not going to the dark side, and it further connects those two characters in an interesting way." There's an interesting contrast with these two characters that manages to make their dynamic interesting, and it definitely feeds into an interesting take on the force. I also agree that they handled Luke's storyline in an interesting way. I think this film is addressing Luke's legacy, not only in the SW universe, but also in real life among fans of the franchise, and I really love films that subtly turn their spear in the direction of the audience as well.

I also liked the more subtle parallels with Empire Strikes Back. Most prominently, the parallels between Rey investigating the black cave on Ahch-To and Luke going into the cave to confront the vision of Darth Vader on Dagobah.

@Ralizah My partner and I watched ‘Your Name’ the evening after New Years Day, and bearing in mind that we both love Studio Ghibli and that we were hard pressed to find a better animated film last year that wasn’t The Red Turtle or My Life as a Courgette, we came away from Your Name with tears in our eyes!

It is such a good film. You have already expressed my opinions about the film; it really is a Japanese film that celebrates Japanese culture and their heritages. I really like seeing the little everyday bits and bobs that are often overlooked in other lesser known Japanese animated films.

I was half guessing the ‘twist’ and seeing it unfold made me think a combination of ‘aha!’ and ‘oh, not another deus ex machina’. I thought it was fine, but I was mostly too swept away in the story for it to be too much of a focal point.

I highly recommend you to watch My Life as a Courgette and The Red Turtle by the way!

@CanisWolfred What Ralizah says is not really the overall (big) picture. You should go ahead and watch it anyway, given the abundance of positivity the film has received, and for very good reason too.

Be nice to see a Hellraiser return but this looks like a Saw knockoff somewhat. Found out it was filmed in a small town only about an hour and half from me though.

Lupin III: The Secret of Mamo (1978)

I really liked the humor and plot, but the sci-fi stuff didn't make a lot of sense (at least to me).
There are four (!) different english dubs for this movie, and the one I watched was the Geneon/Pioneer Entertainment one, which was pretty good.

This blue eye perceives all things conjoined. The past, the future, and the present. Everything flows and all is connected. This eye is not merely seen reality. It is touching the truth. Open the eye of truth... There is nothing to fear.

Rewatched Your Name in English with the rest of the family. They seemed to really enjoy it! And, rewatching the film, it's remarkable how much foreshadowing there is. Also noticing a lot of lovely symbolism connecting the various parts of the film. Even the plot development I derided as a deus ex machina in the later half of the movie is starting to be something I can appreciate (after having read up on Shintoism more).

I'm seriously debating whether or not I like this more than Blade Runner 2049. It's THAT good.

@Solea Shinkai has always been a fairly niche director. I imagine creating something that became this huge a blockbuster must be overwhelming for him. That sort of humility is pretty refreshing compared to the conceited jerks who infest Hollywood.

And yeah, "throttling the hugeness of an ideal" is a good way of describing this work. He often felt like he was working with themes too vast and close-to-heart to properly convey in his films, which simultaneously made them charming, unique, and very flawed. He has found a way to channel his emotional themes and deliver a compelling work of fiction.

@RancidVomit86 Oh no, they're torture-porning Hellraiser now?

I hate how the people in this creatively bankrupt industry keep digging up old franchises to ruin instead. There really needs to be a shake-up in American horror cinema.

Sonatine - Yakuza film starring Takeshi Kitano. I've seen it before, but as Netflix hasn't once worked for me ever since we installed our first Smart TV (go figure), I decided to give this another go since it's one of the few films I own on Amazon Video.

There's a reason I own it though, and that's because I do like it. Definitely worth a look if you're into Japanese films.
