Hey guys, I want to buy a new laptop. I'd like to get a Mac but I might also get a PC. I want one cheap, however, I'd I'd never been much of a PC gamer but would like to start. So, what's a good, affordable Mac or PC laptop good for playing games?

Currently Playing:
Xbox 360: Arkham City, MW3, Gears 3, UMV3, Battlefield 3
PS3: inFAMOUS 2, LBP 2. Rachet & Clank: All 4 One, Uncharted 3, Resistance 3
Xperia Play: Crash Bandicoot
iOS: Sonic CD, Infinity Blade, Arkham City Lockdown, Mega Man X, Chrono Trigger

Mac is a terrible option for price and gaming.

My toshiba laptop can run Source games (TF2, Portal/2, Half Life 2, etc.) on medium settings and newer games (arkham asylum, Bioshock, etc.) on low. http://us.toshiba.com/computers/laptops/satellite/L650/L655D-...

You'd want something with a nice graphics card, at least 4GB of ram, and higher GHz for the cpu.

Most pc gamers say that building a gaming desktop would be cheaper than buying a laptop in general, but my laptop works fine for my needs.

Go down the route of building your own computer. It will last you for a long time, especially if you get high end stuff now.

That seems like a good option, but can sometimes be risky. I've built a good computer before, but wasn't really optimized for what I wanted to do with it. The computer I have now can run Portal 2 at highest settings and I bought it for about $350 on TigerDirect.

First of all if you want a good gaming computer go a Desktop. With a desktop you will be able to upgrade it alot easier than a laptop and a gaming desktop is alot cheaper than a gaming laptop. I paid $500 for my gaming desktop compared to 1000 for the wife's gaming laptop. But if you are so keen on getting a laptop I suggest an Alienware M11X.. I can say that is one of the best gaming laptops I have used for the price.

Do as others have mentioned and forego purchasing a notebook computer for the sole purpose of computer gaming. Don't even bother with Apple.

Figure out the amount you are willing to spend on a notebook and instead purchase parts from local computer shows or Newegg and build yourself a gaming rig. It may seem daunting at first, but you'll soon understand, everything is so easy now...and color coded, seriously, a child could put together a computer.

Take it from me, I currently use a notebook for gaming, it stinks. It was top of the line many years back, but it's definitely showing its age. I can't run anything at full specs nowadays, everything is set on medium-low settings and it's passable, but eventually I'll be setting up a proper gaming rig...when there is funds to do so.

When you do get up and running, check out Steam. It's probably the easiest way to purchase PC games online.

Good luck.

As a longtime gaming enthusiast but a casual hardware buyer, I would not rule out a laptop if you are looking for something portable and self-contained. I purchased a laptop with gaming in mind, and was able to make an acceptable compromise between price and functionality.
Swiket's suggestion is worth a look.

I get where he's coming from; gaming desktops really are the bomb, especially with all the attachable peripherals and surprisingly low setup price, but having something portable to game on is also a lot nicer. Stay away from Macs though. (shudder)

My personal opinion is go for anything above 4GB RAM, and go for laptops with medium-high capability core processors. You can still get these for not-overly-high prices, as overstimated today. Intel Core laptops are great for media, just as an example.

Just take not that I'd advise you to also have a Windows XP OS on whatever laptop you decide to choose in future. It's your choice, but just a friendly recommendation.

As a Mac user, I can testify that while Macs are the perfect option for other things, it's not a very good gaming machine. Get a PC, or get a Mac and install Windows on it as a side OS for games.
