I'm sure this has been debated before, but I really think this would be a huge hit. Hear me out.
I don't think Nintendo should create the next Pokemon game on iPhone. Instead it would be a social game that focuses on booster packs, training and battling with friends. No story missions, no gym battles, no NPCs, no world to explore. It should be set up more like a card game with DS like battles. You get a booster pack of six common pokemon and have a choice to battle friends, randoms, or tournaments.
Friend battles match you up with your friends of course, but uses Facebook and other social media to create matchups. Every five battles you earn a booster pack with a low probability of a rare pokemon. Random matches you up with random people to battle that have pokemon at the same level.
Tournaments are where you can earn rare pokemon. Enter and win enough matches in a tournament and you can gain progressively better booster packs. There can also be themed tournaments like grass, fire, and water where the winner gets a super rare pokemon of that type or a TM to teach. And of course only the best can compete in the ultimate tournament the Elite Four.
This would sell incredibly well and it doesn't take away from the main game. Any thoughts?

Many people these days don't have time to run around in a game. Instead they run around in real life and get a notification on their phone a friend just challenged you to a battle. That would be tons of fun.
exactly what @Einherjar said.
the only new Pokémon game with booster packs people need is another Pokémon TCG and for the 3DS/WiiU not smartphones!

Right, but then compare that to how many people who own a iPhone/Android and then its no competition. The reason I bring this up is that Nintendo announced they are thinking about developing for smartphones in the future, and I think this would be cool.
"We are thinking about a new business structure," Iwata said at a press conference today attended by Bloomberg. "Given the expansion of smart devices, we are naturally studying how smart devices can be used to grow the game-player business."
They are looking into developing for Apple and Android systems soon.

If they develop games it would be small games like 2-3 minigames and then "buy Mario Party 11 for more" just to promote their console to unaware consumers
Currently playing:
Pokemon X
Bravely Default
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate The metrologgery
That sounds like it would be broken incredibly fast. Pokemon works because you are able to catch and train any pokemon you want on your own. The only people who would ever win in this would be the people with the rare pokemon, which would give them even more rare pokemon and make them even more difficult to defeat. The only way to fix that is if nintendo gave you the ability to buy stronger pokemon, but then that would just make it a "pay to win" type of game.
