@IceDomino nothing is wrong with watching shows like that. They may not be popular or well liked, but if you like them, that's fine by me.

The tanookduke strikes again!

@CJD87
I love the idea of going from kids' cartoons to The Wire and The Shield!

If we are going for any and all great shows, I'll add The Singing Detective, Our Friends In The North, Twin Peaks, and It's A Sin.

Why they cancelled that second show from the creators of Dark, I'll never know.

@jump Lets go fart joke enjoyer 👍🏻
Best humor

Space and Games are similar. Space is endless and new stuff is out there waiting to be discovered. Games are always being made but the creativity is different from one game to another and so many more ideas still haven't been imagined or created yet. (That came out better than expected lol)

@Tanookduke I don't know what age you are, but I hope you will be able to get around your parent's restriction control soon, cause there is a vast world of motion pictures (and other forms of media) out there to amaze you .

Also for me it mostly matters if any type of media or art or conversation or person is able to stir something inside me, sometimes it is, as @jump mentioned somewhere above, as simple as fart jokes and nihilistic stuff (though Rick & Morty also picks a lot of heart strings for me from time to time, just as Midnight Gospel - but I guess that both those series will be in conflict with the age restriction boundaries you may be having over there), other times I just have to think (or from time to time cry - which I love for it is something I had unlearned a bit during becoming older) a lot during series - the best part is when stuff suddenly triggers something inside of me .

If you are able to watch anime over there, maybe these will be a change of pace?:

  • Anohana: The flower we saw that day (sentimental story about a group of friends);
  • Assasination classroom (goofy-ish classroom series, but somewhat realistic for teachers);
  • Eden (short dystopian series);
  • From the New World (kind of disturbing, definitely not parent restriction approved, but also interesting view on cultures and life);
  • Full Metal Alchemist (definitely not parent restriction approved, but very interesting alternative deep take on what people are unfortunately capable of);
  • Ghost in the Shell (preferably the older series, but I kind of liked the newer ones too, just to continue being in that world - as an extension of Rene Descartes' mind-body dualism - not parental approved);
  • Different Ghibli movies, such as Grave of the Fireflies, The Wind Rises, Spirited Away, et cetera (just look up a list on the internet with all there movies);
  • Different movies from Studio Ponoc, such as Modest Heroes;
  • Honey and Clover (series about growing up, love during high school/university and life becoming more serious);
  • Kimi no todoke (semi-quirky and definitely heartfelt series about love in high school);
  • Kino's journey (have forgotten what it was about, but definitely loved it, haha);
  • Monster (dark detective-ish mystery in a divided Germany and Europe...maybe not in line with the parental restrictions, but very interesting also from a historical perspective);
  • Paprika (your parents will definitely not like this, but then again I don't think they will get it, haha - is very dark and colourful at the same time and twisted in a certain way);
  • If we are talking about Paprika I will also throw in "Akira" and "Serial Experiments Lain" - both kind of bizarre and interesting take on humanity from a dystopian perspective);
  • Steins Gate (one of my most sentimental favourites about a goofy genius trying to reach parallel dimensions - can't say more);
  • The Garden of Sinners (very dark detective-ish mystery series about homicide-ish cases - loved the music, art and atmosphere in this one - definitely not parent restriction appropriate though);
  • The Girl who leapt through time (the need to grow up and the possibility to time travel);
  • Violet Evergarden (how to pick up life after (and also still during) war combined with learning about love...loved this one a lot);
  • Your Lie in April (very interesting take on the way our societies and loved ones can put pressure on us and what it is about to express yourself - especially when love comes around - loved this one also a lot);
  • In line with Your Lie in April maybe "March comes in like a Lion" (not finished yet I think, but unsure if and when it will continue);
  • 5 centimeters per second (very heartfelt and sentimental movie - can't say more);
  • Mushishi (one of my all time favourite series about a traveling doctor during a long-gone alternative time);
  • The Anthem of the Heart (heartfelt (and at the same time light-hearted) story about guilt and trauma and overcoming them);
  • Kimi no Na Wa ( beautiful story about two adolescents - can't say more).

And probably many more, haha, I have been watching anime since my tenth and still love it a lot, though I also love going to an Art House or Art Film Festival for again very different takes on life and cutural perspectives on the world and all life on it. Don't know if you have an Art House close by or easy access to Art Film Festivals, but those might be able to help with a change of pace .

For now good luck and have fun with your endavour .

Oohw and because @Zuljaras mentioned "The Office" - maybe "After Life" (humour and sadness go hand in hand in this series with Ricky Gervais).

Gaming since the early nin(e)ties and probably will until death does me apart :) .
Looking forward till the day we can game with all of our senses.

@Rambler are you talking 1899 the one with the boat? I did like the vibe of it but I just didn’t find it satisfying for some reason though.

@jump
Yeah, I started watching the first episode, then abandoned it, as there's really no point to seeing only part of a story.
Dark must be one of the more acclaimed series on Netflix, so you would've thought that they would give them the benefit of the doubt for their next venture.

@Tanookduke If you like animation in particular, Bob's Burgers is great and definitely can be more adult (the first few seasons are a bit cynical and negative for me so I don't watch those as frequently), I haven't watched a ton, and it's not traditional TV but maybe even check out critical role or something like that? (Also your parents have no power over you, as an adult you're free to adjust the status quo between y'all)

Can I do a completionist run of video game history? (It's still being made so we'll see)
Currently Playing: Unicorn Overlord (Switch)
Next Up: Sand Land (PC)
Panic (Reality)

Tanookduke

@Link-Hero I didn't mean for my opening message to come off as a "smart guy" as to why I'm not surprised by tv show/ movie plots anymore.

What I meant was that I feel that I've seemingly seen it all when it comes to plots due to my easy axcess to movies and shows from 70's and onwards via YouTube videos ,netflix , and the internet as a whole.

The tanookduke strikes again!

FishyS

Clearly the answer is to play video games rather than watch tv. 🤔

@Rambler Crazy right, re. cancellation of 1899? (Follow up from the creators of Dark...)

I always recall the Dark creators being very clear they had mapped out the 3 x seasons from the very beginning, which is testament to how tightly woven the narrative is - and the pacing/quality remains consistent throughout etc.

1899 season 1 was great... but it seems these days that a show has to be a viral smash hit 'out the gate' (Something like Squid Game maybe a good example) otherwise cancellation looms...

@Tanookduke To be fair, a lot of those shows you listed in the original post are for children. I will agree children's media is no-where as good as it was back when I was younger, but that's only because they started catering more to children and less to general audiences. It feels sterilized due to parents effectively complaining about how kids are being exposed to jokes the kids wouldn't really understand in the first place.

As for the reasons you listed that it feels you've seen everything, it mostly is because you have! What you listed were tropes, which are very very common, and are pretty much inescapable. Every single piece of media has tropes ingrained into it, as they are literary or story devices which people have used ever since the dawn of time. There are no real "new" tropes, given that everything under the sun has already been told. Most stories are basically an amalgamation of ideas which have already been done, with the only thing being unique about them being execution of said stories. If you boil most game plotlines down to their most basic elements, you are left with stories about slaying god, the church being evil, or characters being kidnapped and having to be saved.

This being said, in order for tropes to actually feel effective and not the same thing regurgitated over and over on loop, you need to actually have people who play with them. Twist them, change them, alter them. Something which the channels you said you watch do not do, seeing as most of them are kids shows. Take a classic trope like the "Its all a dream ending" trope. On its own, the trope is lame and undoes a good amount of a story outright. However, if you were to twist it upon its head and say "The protagonist thinks that this is all a dream, when it's actually just reality," then you're left with a story that would be a bit more interesting.

"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."

If the Nintendolife forums would give out awards for the years best threads, this would and should be at least nominated.

I agree with what most people said, best to watch some other channels. Also apply for harvard (you sure to get in), get a PhD in media sciences and turn the tv industry upside down with your knowledge on predictability.

I think that's more to do with the games you're playing than the majority of games are about killing God and the evil church.

@jump I mostly meant that as an example. Slaying Gods and the evil church is effectively JRPG plotlines for the most part, rescuing someone in distress is a trope used in a lot of stories as well. Same with defeating an enemy with friendship.

That's definitely the plot of the Sims
