Well, i guess my pleas for people to to tone down the overreactions and actually educate themselves instead of relying on the views and opinions of others have fallen on deaf ears. I'll just gracefully exit from this "conversation". Enjoy, folks. I mean, it's not like i practice law for a living or anything ... oh wait.

I've spent a while educating myself in the last month, while it almost certainly won't pass in it's current form, the vague language is kinda scary.

the unwarranted condescension isn't necessary — regardless of your background, people will disagree. let it go

[16:44] LztheBlehBird: James doesn't know the rules? For shame!!!
Oh, I'm not naive, I know just how Washington works. I'm just not going into any real details. Because if I do, there will be highly partisan and heated catfights that will just get the thread close.

Here's the thing. I don't care if your a lawyer. I have educated myself on this bill quite extensively and have taken part in a few call your senator/write to your senator days. I have participated as I am quite concerned. I don't know how you could just push it aside like it's nothing....

I will pop back in for a moment and apologize for my admittedly unecessary condescension.
Now, notice that i did not speak either for or against SOPA (although apparently some people seem to think i did) — my whole point was merely that people (and i was not pointing to anyone in particular, so there is no reason for defensiveness) hear about this kind of legislation, and rather than actually take the time to educate themselves directly from the source, they knee-jerk-react based on what they've read from other people with their own vested interests (on both sides of the argument) on the issues involved.
Bottom line — educate and inform yourselves, and reach your own informed opinions. Don't just parrot the opinions of others, especially when others have their own interests. /fin

i think it is a dis-service to assume that no one here has educated/informed themselves and are merely parroting what others have said. i have lived long enough to be wary of the erosion of freedoms/rights. i don't think there was much panic expressed here so much as concern. it is better to be aware beforehand than broadsided afterwards as there are a number of groups with their own agendas/vested interests involved who will put those interests ahead of what is best for the public at large. the fact of it is that money talks, actually screams when necessary. jmho.

Hm, perhaps you know the legal ramifications better than the Stanford Law Review, which recently published its warnings of the dire consequences of this legislation? Look around you; you'll find that the highest ranks of your legal profession have taken negative positions towards the bill.
Furthermore, that's only half the expertise needed. Those who understand the workings of the internet have the other half of the conversation, and I'm one of those, as I'm an analyst charged with handling technology at a large university. But don't listen to me; Google knows the web better than anyone, and they've been on the forefront of those who say that this bill is the most dangerous regulatory legislation yet produced regarding the internet. Facebook has been saying the same, along with Wikipedia, Twitter, Yahoo...

LOL you win good sir. +1 internetz for you.
And this bill won't affect any review sites like IGN, GameSpot, etc., since publishers deal with those sites directly by giving out review copies. What this will affect is all those "Let's Play" videos on Youtube, along with all the game music uploads.
