Topic: Games You'd Like To Give Another Chance And Why?

After playing Dragon Warrior again and actually enjoying it the second time around, I've been thinking a lot about games I should give a second chance. It's interesting how going into a game with a different mindset makes it so you enjoy games differently. Basically, the idea here is what games didn't you like the first time you played it that you think you should probably play again? Why do you think you didn't like it the first time, and why did you think you'd think differently now/later?

For me it's mostly RPGs I played when I was new to the genre, like Final Fantasy 6, Final Fantasy 1 (GBA/PSP), and Golden Sun, as well as some non-RPGs like Banjo-Kazooie:

Final Fantasy VI - Every time I've played this game, I've found new reasons to dislike it, from the story, the characters, the combat, ecetera ad nausium. However, I think I've finally come to term with most of it's problems, especially when I think about how I've put up with far worse in Final Fantasy 1 for the NES and still greatly enjoyed it. Compared to that, FF6's problems seem incredibly miniscule.

Golden Sun - It starts out very slow and there's too much dialogue, but the biggest problem was that it was too easy and the combat's too simple. However, after playing the Xeno series, which has far more dialogue, and Breath of Fire GBA, which has even simpler gameplay and a similar lack of difficulty, yet I enjoyed both games immensely, I think I could easily forgive Golden Sun's shortcomings now.

Final Fantasy 1 - Like with Golden Sun, it was too easy and too simple, but once again, Breath of Fire, while not quite as simple, was similar in most ways, and I've been hooked on that game for quite some time. I think if I came into it with the same mindset I brought to BoF, I could easily enjoy it and maybe even come to love it.

Kingdom Hearts II - I went in expecting it to be exactly like Kingdom Hearts 1 and was extremely disappointed to find it very different. I think if I just go in expecting an enjoyable game, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Super Mario RPG - I expected it to be as top-notch as Paper Mario, only to be disappointed. Again, I think I shouldn't hold it to such high standards. If I just expect to enjoy it, who knows, maybe I will?

The World Ends With You - I'm gonna have to ignore the hipster atmosphere, hope to G-d that the angsty teens get better towards the end of the game at least, and that I can get a handle on the gameplay, but all that does sound doable...just...it's work...

Banjo-Kazooie - I was initially put off by the amount of things I had to collect, but I think if I just collect what I can and not worry about the rest, and just try to enjoy it as a platformer, I think I might actually like it this time around. I was also put off by it's childishness, but I doubt that'll put me off anymore.

I should point out that the characters in TWEWY do get much much better and it's a game you appreciate more (at least beyond just being different from other JRPGs and the awesome music) the more you play it.

for me:

The Fire Emblem series in general: The first release in America I got because of the Smash Bros hype and the idea of mixing two of my favorite games that year, FFTA and Advance Wars 2. But I found Advance Wars less frustrating to people who aren't great and FFTA much better in the replayability and RPG areas. But I can tell the games are good so yeah.

Bioshock: I won't replay this game for years and years I'm sure but I KNOW this a really good game. I just couldn't get into it and I want to. Bioshock Infinite looks better though.

Excitebots: Someday. I actually have no problems with this game, my Wii just broke shortly after playing it and I never got a chance to play it again. I regret that decision.

KATAM: 'sup 3ds.

there are certain games that deserve a second chance (a sequel) to actually live up to potential too (see: Vanquish and Contact)

Final Fantasy 2 and 3 (American versions): I've never gotten into the Final Fantasy series, or most JRPG's for that matter. I've read about all the praise and admiration for the series, but I just couldn't get into it.

Chrono Trigger: Same as above.

WarioWare: I tried the Wii version of DYI, and found it to be incredibly boring. But the series is loved by many, so who knows. Maybe I'll pick it up again.

I always find it amusing when a post on this forum is long enough to trigger my iPad's "Reader" feature.

Honestly I can't really think of any. I guess Mega Man X Command Mission. It was too hard and (the bad kind of) cheesy for me, but it seemed like it'd be fun later on.

This.

I've mentioned before that the Dragon Quest games depress me - because I love the story, setting, characters, etc...but I suck at JRPGs!

To this day I regret not finishing Dragon Quest VIII on PS2.

I am pretty positive that this is an amazing game (it was the first game I ever played as a little kid and I remember loving it), but after trying a couple times to get back into it, I still haven't beaten it. To this day I've never gotten past the Cranky Cavern or whatever with the giant turtle-whale thing...yeah, my memory isn't great. I do own the guide and it's totally hilarious, though.

Battalion Wars 1 or 2. I got the second for the Wii sometime after I got it, and was immediately put off by some of the ridiculous voice acting and the boring tutorial making it very linear and not much like a war, as I thought the games were supposed to be. I honestly didn't give it any chance, and I'd like to try again with a more open mind.

The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.

trust me, I went into that game with a completely open mind.

It's still overrated and lame.

Unfortunately it doesn't. The first half is the best half. It's all downhill after that.

That's good to hear. They really put me off at first, but I'll try to put up with them long enough so I can enjoy the game.

@Shadx

I agree with kkslider, the second games' really lame, and even the first game is more like a Third-Persion action shooter with some strategic elements rather than a big war game.

The Pikmin Series- The time limit in the first one turned me off and I never played the second one, but I'm willing to try the second one should I ever run into it in a store and will certainly get the thrid game on the Wii U.

Just so you know, the second game doesn't have a day limit. You still have until night fall to grab all your pikmin, though.

I want to give Metroid Prime 3: Corruption another go. It was my first Metroid game, and the first person controls kinda threw me off, it was real hard to get used to. And the graphics were too dark for my TV so I could hardly see in some areas. So someday I'd like to try it with an open mind and a better TV.

You can't change the color or brightness on your TV?

Fallout: New Vegas

I got a few days into it and was enjoying myself. I spent a bunch of time wandering the desert then I finally decided to head to Vegas. Spent a bit of time checking out the scenery once I got there. Came back the next day to do some playing and lost, not one, not two, but my last THREE game saves due to corruption. Haven't been back since.

Lost about 5-6 hours of gameplay.

I really enjoyed Fallout 3 so I really want to give New Vegas another chance. Also, all the NV DLC was half off yesterday so I picked up the last ones I needed.

I got it probably early 2010. Played it once or twice and went straight back to uncharted and the wii. Just popped it in yesterday and started playing, I totally forgot how hard it is, oh well though I guess I'll try and beat it
