It noticed that the Wii and 3ds versions of xenoblade are a lot darker looking that definitive edition and was wonder what was people opinion on which they prefer.

@MorningRain Switch, easily. The environment and lighting changes are a non-question, being strict improvements. The only thing that's a matter of taste is the character models, which I'm ...fine with. They grew on me significantly, even if I still prefer the Wii character models slightly.

Vastly prefer the switch version. The character models are better looking, and so are the environments. I also love how much more expressive the characters are in the cutscenes. Heck, even some cutscenes where it was too muddy or dark to tell what was actually happening got improved as well.

@Balta666 I honestly don’t get why anyone would get on the 3Ds version, since it’s nit even playable..

I'm still a little unsure about the art style (for some reason I feel that the anime aesthetic is a lot more fitting to XC2 - maybe I'm just averse to change!), but it undoubtedly looked better than the original. The original already looked fairly dated when it came out a decade a go, mostly due to being in SD rather the HD. I think other Wii games get away with it better due to being less detailed generally - whereas XC tries to cram a lot into 480p.

Now the music? That's a different question. I've not really listened to the soundtracks side-by-side, but for Gaur Plains at least I know there are some elements of the original that I prefer to the remaster.

Switch version looks a lot better. While I wasn't initially a fan of the new character styles, they do actually look really good when things are in motion, and obviously they made quite a lot of improvements to the environments as well, so the Switch version of the game is pretty much better across the board.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

The Switch version overall looks the best. From what I've played of the Switch version, I think Satorl Marsh at night is slightly off with the bloom effect from the trees and the weather outside in Eryth Sea while inside the main section of Alcamoth doesn't seem as striking as on the Wii. I think the only reason why I would want to play the Wii version now is to re-experience how cozy Alcamoth was during a storm or meteor shower.

@DomGC I saw someone who said that the switch version looked horrible, yet said 2 looked fine. They need to get their eyes checked..

@YusseiWarrior3000 The dude is a huge xenoblade 2 fan, and kept saying how he hates the original, but yet he only got to the second area of the game and decided it was garbage.

He apparently beat it on the Wii, and bought it again to see if it was any better.

@YusseiWarrior3000 I’m more of the opposite. I can’t get myself to enjoy the sequel, or even take it seriously, but I like the first one.

@YusseiWarrior3000 Only a handful. What I couldn’t take seriously was mainly how the game has jarring tone shifts. One minute you’re fighting a boss that’s a massive joke, and then right after that boss, a tragic scene happens, with the boss before taking me out of that scene entirely.

The only thing I really liked about 2 was the beginning of Chapter 10. The ending wasn’t even that great in my eyes, since the Sacrifice Pnuema makes really seems needless.

XC1 isn't a bad game, it just suffers in comparison to XC2's actually likable cast, better music, great humor, superior heart-to-heart implementation, fun combat, and superior environments. At least the Switch version of XC1 doesn't look like a PS2 game.

The Switch version and it's not even close. I actually bought XC on Wii day one back in the day and stopped after a few hours because I couldn't stand the ugly visuals. I only resumed my playthrough because I kept seeing a lot of praise of XC online. It's such a great game but gosh, it is so ugly on Wii (and let's not talk about the 3DS version). The Switch version thankfully fixes that.

@Ralizah Eh, the cast for 2 is a mixed bag. Some of the characters in 2 don't go anywhere, and are just there after a while like Morag. The only characters I really actually ended up liking were Zeke, Jin, and Malos. The music is alright in 2, but I only like a handful of ost's, like the abandoned ship theme and a few others. The final boss theme, at least to me, falls a bit flat compared to the original game's, and nothing can beat Engage the Enemy.

With the combat, I never could figure it out. It was way too complicated for me, and I didn't really enjoy how the characters were so slow in comparison to the first game. I'm aware that pouch items make the fighting a bit faster, but it still bums me out that auto-attacks cancel if you move. It's kind of weird to see the fight scenes in cutscenes be so energetic, only for them to not be like that at all in the combat.

With heart to hearts, I'll give 2 credit, given that they fully voiced them, and they're way better from the ones I've done. Future Connected did a good job at taking those and making them work in 1's world, by having voiced cutscenes be heart to hearts.

The humor in 2 really isn't my thing either. Most of it just feels like over the top generic Shonen moments, with it sometimes bleeding into the serious scenes, causing the serious scenes to lose impact. For example, and yes I use this example a lot, The final Bana fight, where you fight a mecha maid.. only for a character to die right after, in order to showcase Nia's blade ability. It's supposed to be a more tragic scene, but I just can't take it seriously for the life of me, mainly because of how the character dies.

2's an alright game, and it's not bad by any means, but I just prefer 1 a bit more, since the characters, at least to me, are a bit better, and the story holds itself more seriously.
