i was playing street fighter 2 on genesis back when it came out. i got super pissed and grabbed the 6 button controller by the wire and beat it against the ground. buttons flew everywhere. i lied to my mom about how it happened i think and got a new controller. so i was back to 2 controllers.
sometimes lying pays off.

Hahahahaha.

The only reason I haven't smashed a controller in a long time is because I'm the one that has to replace/pay for it. When I wasn't, I couldn't have cared less. Ha

I got mad at Battle for Bikini Bottom for that stupid dream level.

You know, I say I'm good at 3D Platformers, but then I do dumb thing like these.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAy there.

All the time. Especially when the difficulty seems unfair. You wanna play something that will guarantee a broken controller or various vile curse words to spew from your mouth? Play an old school 2-D fighter against the Cpu. Works every time!

I thought video games were designed for the primary purpose of inciting rage? You're not really having fun until you're screaming racial epithets at cute animals.

@Tendo64 Usually no. But sometimes when something that is supposed to be random happens far more or far less often than it is stated to. Like if I get critical hit several times in a row or an item with a 5% spawn rate takes dozens of attempts to find...

Then I get angry.

At 41 years old, I don't usually get really angry with games anymore. I think the last time I was close to rage was playing Shovel Knight on the Wii U.

Sometimes I get frustrated but it's usually only when:
A - I'm in a bad mood (not really due to the game itself)
B - I lose a lot of progress upon death
C - I've been trying to beat something for quite some time

Definitely get frustrated sometimes, but not controller throwing levels of angry. Usually a verbal "Ugh, seriously?!" Is as far as it goes. The last time I remember getting really frustrated is in Celeste, it's a great game but those cassette levels and chapter 9 are absolutely brutal. Although most of my frustration came from dashing in an incorrect direction thanks to using an analog stick.

i played battletoads alot on gameboy, the game is rock hard and i nearley smashed the gameboy off the wall a few times, but it was good what nintendo did with the gamecube controllers, that they could twist and turn a bit in your hands, so you would not smash them off the wall.

@PikaPhantom those are really the only 3 reason I get frustrated either. I hate games that make you lose loads of progress when you die, especially when you’re close to a save point.

@Apportal I definitely favor games that respect the player's time. As long as I can save whenever or save points are frequent, I'm satisfied, and luckily I don't really have to deal with losing a lot of progress in games.

Not usually, but I'll list some exceptions:

  • As a kid, losing to a brother in a multi-player, particularly if it was a (grits teeth, shuts eyes and whispers) younger brother. I can remember a few angry mashing of the reset buttons on the Amiga, for instance.
  • Boss fights in Xenoblade Chronicles. That game repeatedly let's you advance through the world with your eyes closed before presenting you with a boss that the game hasn't prepared you for. I really dislike the combat I've that game, so having to persist through those boss fights is ****ing tortuous.
  • Missing the end of an eBay game auction when I've been watching a good item that then goes for a steal eats me up. I have to delete the item from my watch history immediately or it just kills me for days.
  • Majora's Mask - I've played 7 Zelda games so far and this is without doubt the worst. It's got some great stuff in it, but it's severely hindered by the way it's delivered. My latest beef with it is a big one - the Gomess fight in the Stone Tower. Tatl tells you the bats must be defeated before you can harm Gomess. This is bull****. But as a first-time player you obviously heed the advice and spend time and effort trying to defeat all the bats, which just keep respawning, so you tweak your method and keep trying, and failing. So you die, and the ****ing game returns you to the temple entrance and you have to make your way back to the fight through multiple rooms, with multiple mask changes and 180 flipping of the rooms. And even when you wise up and realise Tatl was talking ****, you start taking Gomess on directly and the camera absolutely ****s you. I must have had to go through all that rigmarole roughly 15 times before I beat his ass. And on the penultimate attempt I did throw (in a controlled manner) my 3DS on to my bed when I died. And now I know a technique it feels easy, but before that it was maddening.

I threw a controller across the room over Mega man X6 once. Then when X7 came out i wanted to gouge out my eyes with a corkscrew.

I felt extremely exhausted and really upset when i unable to pass this DDR A song on Challenge difficulty. I can only managed until 1/4 song before i ran out of my breath. The stepchart was totally nuts and brutal, it felt like level 20 instead of level 19. The video below just only to show how insane the stepchart.

Interesting topic. I do sometimes get angry at games to the point where I have screamed and yelled profanities, but typically, I only really do that with games that feel like they did something unfair, like dying due to a glitch. I have not broken any controllers, although there were times where I was wondering if my controller was going to break based on the creaking from the way I grip the controllers tightly when I am frustrated.

Majority of the time, I feel the big thing I do is instead of get angry at the game, I normally treat it with apathy. So if I lose a lot of progress in a game, and the game is struggling to hold my interest anyway, I don't get angry, I just think "meh", and walk away, because I could be playing something else. If you don't want to kill my interest, don't make me repeat whole sections of the game. I don't mind backtracking because there is a normally a reason, but if I get to the end of a hour long stage for example, only to die at last minute, then get put back to the entrance, my interest just falls off a cliff.

That is a very bold statement. I am curious as to which other Zelda games you have played now so I know what you are comparing it too.

@gcunit Do you also have similar problems with Ocarina of Time, or are the problems more unique to Majora's Mask such as the 3 day time-limit? I think the only thing that annoyed me about that mechanic was if you failed a side-quest during those 3 days, you would have to re-do the loop to try again.

I used to whenever I played a competitive multiplayer game, it brought out the worst in me.

I do my best to avoid competitive games these days.
