Many nintendolife members may not know the name, and that's okay. Heavy metal isn't for everybody. But this is my tribute to one of the greatest guitarists of all time, who was needlessly murdered by a psychotic fan December the 8th, 2004. This year is the 5th anniversary of Dimebag's senseless death. Dec 8th is also the anniversary of Beatles singer John Lennon's needless death. This is my own private tribute to a guitarist of incredible talent who was killed long before his time. Some of you may not approve of his drinking or pot smoking nature, but those things do not detract from the amazing talent that he had. Dimebag is best known as the guitarist for legendary metal band Pantera, as well as Damageplan, amongst many other guest appearances. Dimebag was needlesslly murdered Dec 8th, 2004 at a Damageplan concert by a fan later diagnosed with schizophrenia, amongst other disorders. Also killed that night was the band's head of security while trying to perform CPR on Dimebag, and innocent fans of the show. Being the 5 year anniversary of his death, I was wondering if any NL members were Pantera fans growing up, and if anybody had ever actually met him, or what are your best memories of Pantera, I never got to see a show, did you? My favorite album is 'The Great Southern Trendkill', a total slap in the face to trendy Seattle bands in the 90's.

I got to meet Pantera in Dallas many years ago during their heyday and they were all very nice guys. A girl I went to high school with used to be married to Rex Brown, the bass player of the group. I was very saddened to see Dime killed at that concert, as he was a very funny and energetic guy. May he rest in peace.

As for favorite albums, I'm still very partial to the Vulgar Display of Power. But they were all good in their own way.

Awesome thread, Mach-X! I was fortunate enough to see Pantera in San Bernardino, CA for the 2000 Ozzfest and it was mind blowing! It was my first time seeing them after being a fan for some time so it was so awesome when they finally hit the stage. Phil Anselmo was drunk and wasn't performing at his best but the band was tight! Dimebag is a true metal legend!

R.I.P. Dimebag and everyone who lost their lives that night.

Edit: That's awesome that you got to meet them, Corbie!

One of my first concerts was to Pantera. I wasn't yet a huge fan, but all of my friends were going. I think that was the turning point for me getting more into metal as a whole. And Dimebag was totally awesome on guitar. He had a sound that was his own.

I'll never forget those lyrics, I was listening to Soul Bleed when I found out he and other people were dead. So sad.

Doesn't get any better than Vulgar Display of Power. Such a great band and Dimebag was such a tragic loss.

Love Pantera, I never got to see them play live and its a dang shame I didn't . I did get to see Hell Yeah last year and Vinnie Paul is the drummer for the band so I at least got to see a remnant of Pantera play and he was absolutely amazing. Had the shooting never occured Im sure Pantera would still be around just like Metallica. The band was so ahead of there time and music is just as great today as it was back then.
