Topic: Digitally Downloaded's Ten Gaming Series That Need a Rest!

As the title implies, these are the ten series that Digitally Downloaded thinks needs a rest (they didn't apply a number order, so neither will I). Remember, this list doesn't represent my views, just theirs.

  • Mass Effect (the trilogy is firmly over, don't cheapen it by milking it's popularity)
  • Assassin's Creed (while these games are continuously great, there's no denying that Ubisoft has started milking the series with yearly releases)
  • Pokémon (The formula has long gone stale, and each new entry adds less than a yearly Fifa game)
  • Call of Duty (Activision tries it's best to change things up with every release, but it's yearly release schedule keeps innovation to a minimum)
  • Medal of Honor (the series used to be great during the PS1 & PS2 days, but has long since died in it's attempt to catch up to CoD)
  • Battlefield (Like MoH above, it's trying to grab that CoD crowd, and it probably won't end well)
  • Splinter Cell (While these games are great, they haven't surpassed their PS2 heyday, and the push to appeal to the dudebro crowd isn't helping)
  • Sonic (While Sonic Team's creativity is to be admired, they need to try these ideas on another series, because each new Sonic entry continues to drag his name through the mud)
  • God of War (The formula has grown stale, and all the gods are dead. The series has no place left to go)
  • Gears of War (It's juvenile approach to ultra masculinity was amusing the first time, but it's grown quite boring, especially since there's been no attempt to innovate the gameplay over the years)

So, what do you think?

I disagree with Sonic needing a rest. I would agree if they games were still like Secret of the Rings, Black Knight, Unleashed Night Stages, etc, but the recent turn in the quality of the games has been for the best.

I disagree with the sonic part(it needs a little more games and good ones) and with the pokemon reasons since the game has a whole internal change it looks the same but every time the algorithms for everything is changed even if slightly and the new multiplayer features they always add are sweet too, Gamefreak's biggest mistake is to not make extravagantly notable changes instead of only changing the graphics and core of the "invisible" parts, so common players tend to not notice(I myself only started noticing it in the 4thgen)

I pretty much agree with @Knuckles on the Sonic series. His latest games have been fantastic. I also don't care for their views on Pokemon, but to each his own.

Wait, Medal of Honor is still a thing?

And what a silly entry on Pokemon. Each new game has tons of innovation. So much that if you skip a generation, you may be hopelessly lost.

good! it looks like I'm not the only one that thinks pokemon is innovative(and that sonic must pick up its pace now it's finally back to the good game zone, but I liked the secret rings.....)

TrueFace

Sonic (While Sonic Team's creativity is to be admired, they need to try these ideas on another series, because each new Sonic entry continues to drag his name through the mud)

And what, just rehash the same basic formula over and over again? Then, after a couple of installments, people will complain that the series is stale and needs fresh ideas. Just like several other series on the list.
While some of Sonic Team's efforts have certainly been better than others, I respect how they continually try to keep Sonic fresh with new ideas. They're not taking the easy route and playing it safe. Plus, it seems, they've found a great balance of classic features and innovations as of late. Why should a series that's not afraid to break the mold be put on hiatus?
Also, I highly doubt Colors and Generations hurt Sonic's reputation.

Well here is my list..

Final Fantasy=Just end the pain... after part 7 the series went downhill with the pedal to the metal...

God of War..

Pokemon= Okay yeah I loved the originals.. but after that each new installment got worse IMHO.. (Do like some of the spin offs though like Rumble U)

Grand Theft Auto

COD= Sorry time to kill the golden goose...

Franchises that need to come back

Nights= A Sega classic... needs a return to form.. and Wii U may be the perfect system to do it on..

Panzer Dragoon

Phantasy Star

Shining Force( A real Shining Force)

Mario RPG (Paper is okay but RPG was better)

Rygar= This in HD would be awesome

Chibi Robo= Don't know why but I liked this one... needs to be on Wii U

I am a wild and free Ninetails not a trainer.. get over it...

Personally, I agree with the list for the most part, but I do think they should have waited until X & Y are out. I haven't played Pokémon in since gen 3, but I can tell these games look like they're going to be doing a lot new (something I didn't feel upon seeing gens 4 & 5).

I'd say Mario, only because he makes too many cameos/appearances. His actual 3D games only come out once or twice per gen, which isn't bad. Smash, MK, and 3D Mario should be plenty. Games like Rayman Legends and DK have shown that Nintendo EAD can pass on the 2D torch and give Mario a break.

Games like God of War and Metal Gear Solid are scraping the bottom of the barrel for back story, it's hard to watch.

Any shooter is a given. I think PS4 and Xbox One both have around 4-5 shooters at launch...yeah, that's a good start.

KH, just because they took too much time jumping around in spinoffs to a series that's already the ultimate crossover/spinoff, it just makes me want to see Sora and all his friends killed off already and have SE go back to some of their better IPs. Same with FF, I don't hate it, but FFXIII-3, FFIV-2, and FFXIII Verus...er, I mean FFVX instead of a Chrono, Valkyrie Profile, Mana, or ANYTHING sequel? Yuck.

yeah and if they want to keep final fantasy going they should at least make a reboot in 3 years or so after a cooldown time as the series is SURELY dying a slow and painful death

In my opinion, Saints Row really needs to stop. Each game is just serial escalation from the previous one! I thought Saints Row 3 was a little too over the top for me, and then comes SR4 with supposed alien invasions and other ridiculous nonsense. If it keeps trying to 1-up itself, we're all going to have a bad time.

I think Final Fantasy can keep going because it's not a series with an overarching plot or anything else which must be common between entries, so if they want to mix the formula up for the next game they're totally able to. FFXV is an ARPG, for example, and part of me still feels wrong saying that

And I somewhat agree with Pokemon. Then again, I was more or less over the series after two main series games and a few spinoffs

EDIT: @R_Champ you did not just say Metal Gear Solid is scraping the bottom of the barrel, man. There's no way that's true.

always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)

Medal of honor is already finished.

I think Halo doesn't need to be rested but I do think we need a mainline game that isn't the adventures of Master Chief and his space computer mommy/girlfriend.

I disagree with most of the entries on the list. I could see Call of Duty, but the other ones I don't. IMO, they should have put Mario on the list instead of Pokémon.

Pokemon's formula has gone stale and it still sell millions...but Madden and FIFA have not gone stale? Totally legit.
