When playing Mario/Sonic/Alex Kidd etc, how important is it that you collect ALL COINS/RINGS and/or kill all the baddies?

For me, it's an obsession!

@AndroidiOS I used to be like that before I just learned to just forget the coins and go fast.

In sonic I just collect the ones I can, same with Mario. But I won’t go out of my way for them.

For Sonic games, I'll kill any enemy I come across. Rings I'll ignore. (Unless they're Giant Rings).

For Mario games, 2d ones, I prefer ignoring Star coins. Though with Wonder coming out next week, you betcha I'll try getting every large Flower Coins.

You often miss extra levels without collecting all star coins and other 'official' collectables. So I definitely collect those. Normal coins don't even have a way to track whether you caught them all, so I just grab the convenient ones during my playthrough.

For sonic collecting all rings would involve going a lot of seperate paths. It would also arguably involve never getting hit and losing any. 🤔 Sounds an interesting challenge, but not one I would normally do.

If the game tracks collection of a collectible, it's worth doing.
Super Mario games will provide tracking of the "big coins", like Advance Coins in the Super Mario Advance series, or red coins in the Yoshi's Island series, but otherwise doesn't track high scores for coins collected in a single stage. I'm not sure that New Super Mario Bros 2 even does that, and that has a coin-collecting gimmick with a global coin counter that has the goal of reaching one million, or even 9,999,999.

I like going for coins/rings that happen to be within my reach, but I don't lose sleep over a few that I've missed. In most Mario platformers, I tend to prioritize getting power-ups and stuff like star coins. Especially if the latter unlocks more levels.
