Hey everyone, I've noticed that whenever I go to the store, I see a lack of DVDs, but a huge collection of Blu-Ray discs. Are they starting to phase out DVDs? I don't have a Blu-Ray player, but I'm afraid I need to buy one soon. Can it play my DVDs?
Currently Playing: Xbox 360: Arkham City, MW3, Gears 3, UMV3, Battlefield 3 PS3: inFAMOUS 2, LBP 2. Rachet & Clank: All 4 One, Uncharted 3, Resistance 3 Xperia Play: Crash Bandicoot iOS: Sonic CD, Infinity Blade, Arkham City Lockdown, Mega Man X, Chrono Trigger
I don't have a Blu-Ray and only one VHS in the whole house; DVD's are how I watch things, so if they stop making DVD's then I'm in some serious trouble, 'cause I'm not buying a Blu-Ray they're stupid
If I go to wal mart tonight I'll take a picture of the crap load of DVDs they have on their shelves as proof that DVDs aren't dying, at least in my town.
I have noticed that store shelves are usually overstocked with DVD's. With just about every movie imaginable available online it's hard to justify buying them on discs. Seems they don't sell very well anymore. I wonder how much longer blue rays will last before they are made obsolete by digital distribution.

They're not taking over in the UK yet. Blu-Ray's still only got a couple of shelves at the back of my closest HMV whilst the rest of the upper floor is packed with several aisles of DVDs.
I have noticed that stores still carry DVDs but they are like waaaay cheap now. Some I even see for like 5 dollars or less. Give it about a year or two and DVDS will probably be gone.

Geez. Doesn't seem that long ago that VHS was forced out, also forcing the consumer to get a DVD player if they are to continue renting new release movies. Now we're already to that point with DVD? (sigh) Somebody please tell me Blu-ray's successor isn't already on the market...

At least Blu ray players can still play DVDs and you dont have to rebuy your entire movie collection like you had to do with the transition from VHS to DVD.

In Australia at least, the Blu-Ray sections in stores are growing but nowhere near the size of the DVD sections.
I think it's a pretty hard sell to get people to upgrade given the expense compared to DVDs (and DVD players). Also, unless the movie was filmed in the last few years there is little or no advantage in terms of visuals to go to a high-definition format - unless the original print has survived in excellent condition or lots of effort has gone in to remastering it.
I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.

This is very true. For those of you who can't see the difference between the DVD and Blu-ray picture quality, watch it Blu-ray exclusively for a few years, and then go back to DVD, and you'll notice a huge difference, just like DVD/VHS. I never noticed much of a difference when DVD first came out.

Yep that is also a good point. I have a Blu Ray player but most of my movies are DVD I only have a few Blu Rays like Thor. I watched Thor the other day than after that watched Ironman which was on DVD and I could notice a difference.
