Today, I got an electric guitar for my upcoming birthday. With no clue how to do anything at all with it, I have been searching the web for a good, free tutor, but I'm not having very much luck. Does anybody know any sites that can help me?

Is it after 9PM EST? You should probably ignore the above post.

You could always get real lessons

Seriously, do it.

I think the newest Guitar Hero is actually supposed to teach you how to play guitar, but I don't know how well it works. And it's crazy expensive for the new guitar controller. But it's less than a tutor costs.

Yes, get real lessons. They really help and you'll be a far better player as a result.

Like everyone else is saying, get real guitar lessons. If you can't find any- or don't have enough money- see if anyone you know IRL plays guitar and if they can teach you a few songs. In fact, even messing around playing frets(notes) would make you better because you'd adjust to the amount of pressure you need to put on the strings!

Guitar Advice: The guitar strings, from top to bottom, are in the order of E A D G B E BUT it doesn't tell you that when reading tabulature(tabs). They tell you it's in some completely different order EVEN THOUGH you're always supposed to play either the same as it says... or the same as it says except upside-down.

From what I've heard it does a pretty good job of teaching the basics. You won't be shredding after a few hours with it, but it can help.

Believe it or not, though, when I first learned bass I actually used Youtube to supplement my lessons. This was a few years back so I'm not sure about the quality of videos you'll find these days but it helped me.
