i mean there is sooooo much cinematic stuff going on, hyping the setting or the premise of the game and then so little gameplay is shown.

That's something that is a pet peeve of mine. Cinematic stuff is all good and well, but the meat and potatoes of a game to me is the gameplay. I can understand if they're announcing a game that's still in development and doesn't have any gameplay yet, but if you have a game that does have gameplay, show someone playing it!

Even then it can be tricky. For example, Fallout 76 showed gameplay. But what they showed was the character walking through the vault and that was it. To me, that isn't enough. When I think of gameplay, I think of showing off (in this game's case), combat, base building, interacting with NPCs/Players.

In all though, I think Nintendo tends to do a decent job with this. They start off with presentations similar to what the others are doing, but then follow it up with the treehouse, where we can see people playing some of the games from the presentation.

@NaviAndMii Yeah, Bethesda are actually quite good at that. All shows are scripted, obviously, but theirs just has a much more natural feel to it, and even when making jokes on stage, they stay in their own comfort zone, making it feel like it's not about people acting on a stage, saying things that don't fit the picture or the person, which ultimately will make it feel really forced and unfunny...

Meanwhile, Ubisoft's pre-show has started...

If this isn't comedy gold...

Sony's conference was awkward and clunky. What they showed was okay, but WOW that was a lot of filler. I can't believe I'm saying this but Microsoft beat them this year. Clearly the PS4 is waning down and they're prepping for the PS5. This conference definitely gave me Nintendo's 2015 E3 vibes. Clear filler to hold users over until the next console. I give them a C-

My E3 report card so far:

Microsoft: B+
Bethesda: B
Ubisoft: C+
Sony: C-
Square Enix: D+
EA: F

I think Nintendo has this E3 in the bag. They got Smash. That alone will be huge. At least...I hope. The thought of Microsoft winning E3 depresses me.

Yeah, my 'report card' is looking much the same...

Bethesda: B+ (..I did have them higher but, on reflection, B+ seems fair)
Microsoft: B (..did a good job - enjoyable watch)
Ubisoft: C+ (..a little bit cringy in parts - but a solid effort)
Square Enix: D (..fairly sleepy affair - points deducted for pointlessly showing us Kingdom Hearts 3, again!)
Sony: D (..Death Stranding is the gift that keeps on giving, but the overall presentation was quite dull and lacking in content - points deducted for wasting our time by pointlessly showing us Kingdom Hearts 3, AGAIN!!)
EA: E (..the only way that Nintendo could do worse is if they spend the majority of their show talking about an upcoming remaster of Wii Music - AND get points deducted for wasting our time by pointlessly showing us Kingdom Hearts 3, A.G.A.I.N.!!!)

(...not that I've got anything against KH3 - but, y'know, we kind of 'get it' by now! )

To be fair Sony's KH3 trailer was new and showed off some pretty badass gameplay with those pirate ship scenes. And more story, though not like it makes any sense lol

@Octane Bold words....
But, I'm all for it. Go, Pikmin 4! And not yet another weak spin-off, please...

@NaviAndMii Comedy gold indeed... pffff...

@KirbyTheVampire Well, gotta take something back about TLOU 2. Not a snooze fest at all, actually quite entertaining. It is strange, though: watching a Sony conference while not at all being interested in the console or most of its games, but I make a habit of always watching all of them, to be able to make an informed verdict, but also to be fair to the competition.

And in all fairness, Sony actually did show some good and interesting stuff, but the intermissions were absolutely terrible, and the musicians made little sense, so it certainly was a presentation filled with padding, there's no denying that, so they aren't going to win any prizes for that.

But there's enough there for the fans, I suppose.

@NaviAndMii So, I gues you've got that A grade reserved for Nintendo, then?

@jump I've heard anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes but not exact number.

redd214

ThanosReXXX

@jump 45 minutes of Direct, and straight afterwards several hours of Treehouse sessions. Sometimes, these sessions have exclusive reveals as well.

@ThanosReXXX Im not expecting 45 minutes with the news of 2018 only.

@NaviAndMii If a KH3 Trailer showed up during the Nintendo presentation, it'd be anything but pointless, since that would mean it's being announced for Switch!

@ThanosReXXX It seems I had to stop watching Ubi right as it started getting good. I missed the ID@XBox show, I'll catch up on that after Treehouse wraps up the end of the week because I was catching up on Ubi. The cringe moments (Evil Knievel, the Salsa Panda(TM), derpy presenters (as always) somehow cleared up later! I was not expecting the Miyamoto cameo! Nor Switch to become the definitive Starlink version via Fox. Yeah they had great stuff later. The Division 2 actually DOES look good after all (it's as though they were trying to sabotage MS's show with that first trailer) Starlink looks good now, AC is AC, I'm always down for that. Weird to me they're actually considering it an RPG now. Bethesda stops making dialog driven RPGs, Bioware stops making dialog driven RPGs, and Ubi takes their #1 action adventure game and makes it a dialog driven RPG. I don't get this industry sometimes

Not that I don't love my RPGs, I do, and I love that it follows the Origins formula that is technically the best AC game to date. But part of me dies inside realizing I'll never see that true sequel to the original....it will remain a one time experiment that was brilliant and somehow underappreciated, and the magic sauce left with the producer (who is now working on Battlefront....mrrrgrrrgrrrrr...)

You must be thrilled that Sony almost wet the bed with their disastrous presentation Good show...very good show...but man that was a rough start. They couldn't even mic their tent church properly. How does Sony, the microphone manufacturer, and operator of nearly every recording studio in Japan, plus most of the recording studios everywhere else, not to mention one of the big 3 film studios......HOW does Sony manage to mic a room so badly it sounds like a VHS recording of a wedding reception? While you have an Academy Award winning composer/instrumentalist on stage......boggles the mind.

But they saved it with a Nintendo-like reel of gameplay and trailers of some great looking games. I'm stunned with GoS (yes I did the initials just for you ), Ghost of Tsushima...not what I expected at all. I still have no idea WTF is going on with Stranding......which is normal for a Kojima game. It's interesting, arty, innovative, and ultimately I can't tell if it's good. RE2, no thanks...I still will never understand how people actually like that content. TLoU.....I'm not sure what's going on....is it about zombies? Is one of those two going to eat the other? I have no idea what's going on there not having played the first game. I was ready for a jump scare and one of them to sprout a Clicker maw and then we flashed to really really really graphic blades to jugulars in the wasteland and admittedly cool gameplay....and no zombies in sight. I've learned nothing about the game other than that it's even more graphically gory than I expected, and that the message may or may not be that lesbians are the advanced result of a fungal viral plague? Maybe I'm missing critical backstory. Or maybe that's an intentionally confusing teaser. Bad video editing, Sony-Columbia-Tristar. Ask Paramount next time or something.

Nioh 2 was unexpected to me. Some other cool smaller games on show. I'm not a Spider Man fan really, or Marvel in general, but the gameplay looks like it might be fun....and Insomniac makes me take notice. They haven't let me down to date.

Good Sony games. Dismal, dismal presentation. I realize the whole point was for the people at the venue...they have this huge outdoor theme park tour thing set up for them....but at home it was pretty awkward. Then Layden coming out with a "thanks for watching, ok, bye bye, you can go home now" basically was awkward. Quite a change from a football stadium and orchestra. OTOH they showed actual gameplay which is more than can be said for anyone but Ubi.

NEStalgia

NEStalgia

@ZockiGalore I think it's more about the presentation. At E3 companies get 15-15 minutes to reel you in and make you interested in their game....so it's all introduction to concept, world, appearance, content. Gameplay takes a LONG time to usefully show....and a modern game is big and complicated versus pick up and play NES games, so it can take a VERY long time to show "this is how the game really feels". Keeping in mind E3 proper is actually for the journos on the floor for which they have actual play test stations set up to be demonstrated to, and try for themselves. We don't get to see any of that...we don't have pricey tickets It's the journos that then get to introduce us to the gameplay in their own way over months. The big shows are just to introduce the concepts of "whats going to be coming in the future"...the deep dives are slower things filtered through the attendees before they get to us.

NEStalgia

ThanosReXXX

@Knuckles-Fajita Well, remember that Yoshi wool segment from a few years back? That alone already took well over 10 minutes, so they can easily do it with the list of games we already know, and a few more that we're hoping they are going to show. If rumors are to be believed, @Octane is taking care of that, as we speak...

@NEStalgia Yeah, the presentation was terrible indeed, but I have to be honest and say that I did like some of the games, but I already (very grudgingly) admitted that in my previous comment. The bad audio probably came from them using proprietary Sony material, that wasn't compatible with what was already available on the show grounds...

Agreed on The Division 2. I don't know what was up with that. I WhatsApped a friend of mine, who was all "Yeah, The Division 2, baby" during Microsoft's presentation, and I replied: "Yeah, it looked like fun, especially that bit in and around Air Force One, but it certainly wasn't the best looking game of the bunch".

And then the same game was featured on Ubisoft's stage, and also after the show, in a half hour interview and playthrough with the developers, and it somehow looked quite a bit better, so I wondered about that as well.

'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'

NaviAndMii

@MisterPi Yeah, that's true Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that KH3 was there for fans of the series - and I was certainly curious to see the first trailer - but seeing three separate(ish) trailers, in three different conferences, in the space of just three days is a bit much! (..for any game!)

@ThanosReXXX Yeah, just leaving myself a bit of wiggle room in case Nintendo knock it out of the park! (..if not, I'll probably bump Bethesda and Microsoft up in to the A's - between them, they've set the benchmark pretty high - one things for sure, if Nintendo's is of that kind of standard, I'll be very satisfied indeed!)

@link3710 Haha! Yeah, true! ..but I still think I'd rather just have seen one (perhaps extended) trailer instead! (personally, anyway! ) ..a Switch reveal would certainly be HUGE news - but, if it is going to make the cut, I'd be grateful if they just touched on it for 30secs (for HYPE!) before swiftly moving on!
