Do you think that the DS' successor will be an HD machine. Personally I'd love to see a HD handheld, tough I'm not sure if thats even possible (not a very techy kinda guy) imagine a HD Mario/Zelda handheld game wow. i doubt it'll happen . maybe Sony will make one
Nah, I'd expect it to be more along the lines of the PSP. Handhelds don't need the same crazy horsepower as consoles since they have smaller screens and prioritize battery life (the good ones do, at least).
Technically it'd be possible so long as you don't mind your portable's battery power to last about ten minutes.
I hope so. I'm a pretty big Zune critic but the Zune HD display is positively gorgeous. Playing FF7: Crisis Core was awe-inspiring on PSP for similar reasons and OLED/the Zune screen's refresh rate only looks that much better.
If you have a chance to look at the ZuneHD in action, I highly recommend it. 480x272 OLED is quite nice!
@Swerd_Murd Cool I'll look that up.Never even heard of it.Does it have a lot of games available? Well that at least shows that it's possible, right? or do the games only last 10mins?
Even if it is in HD, I still don't give two sh*ts about the DSi XL. Come on, I haven't even owned my DSi for a year (well actually, no one outside of Japan has ) and they expect us to get excited.
DS has always been superior to PSP. The PSP just received the most pointless update for any gaming console ever recently, and besides, I can't find many good games for it. It's a f*cking piece of garbage IMO, and mine is in a closet gathering dust.

^^this isn't about the DSi XL--that's a console revision, not the next DS. At least I don't think so--I figured this was speculation on a future iteration of DS handhelds. DSi XL's resolution is the exact same, it just has a bigger screensize. 256x192 for (EDIT - although this should've been obvious) EACH screen, same as the original DS Chubster.
Err yeah as I said in my OP this is speculation on whether the successor to the DS will be HD. The DSi/Lite/XL/Phat are all variations of the same console. Personally I don't hold out much hope from Nintendo and it wouldn't really bother me one way or the other but it would be pretty cool. Unfortunately NIntendo are'nt renowned for there speedy uptake of tech so Sony or Microsoft will probably do it first. I really can't wait to see the next Nintendo handheld ,I wonder if it will be as revolutionary as the DS was or just a souped up DS.
Good grief, people. The amount of misinfo here is incredible.
HD is a meaningless term when talking about something other than TVs. Even when talking about TVs, you have to be somewhat specific and clarify whether you mean 720i, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p.
Zune HD is a marketing term. The only thing "HD" about it is the 16:9 aspect ratio. Its actual screen resolution (480x272) is less than the iPhone.
The iPhone has a 480x320 resolution. (Or 320x480 if you're holding it upright.) Not 640x480
The DS/DSi has a screen resolution of 256x384 spread across two screens. (256x192 each)
Probably not. HD on a handheld? Unless we're talking military state-of-the-art, then it's probably not possible.

You're right on the iPhone res--I listed the wrong dimensions. For what it's worth I knew the actual ones--just a mistype. Not like it matters given that thousands of people have already made purchasing decisions based on what I wrote
And the Zune HD is not a misnomer per se--it can stream its videos (which are in HD--just downscaled by the device) to other devices in true 720p. It's also an OLED screen which was the reason I included it and differentiated it from the PSP and other devices.
I was interpereting HD as "H-er D than the current DS" and assuming topic creator meant 16:9 and higher res...as it stands 720x1280 on a handheld is absurd.
I have a 50 dollar "MP5 player" I got last year that plays .flv videos and displays 480x800 video....I think that's as close to HD as I've seen on a tiny handheld device

Allow me to simplify: Everyone wants a higher resolution screen.
I don't see any reason why that wouldn't happen in the next major upgrade of Nintendo's handheld devices. Nintendo lags behind the cutting edge, but they do keep up on technology. Each generation of handheld has increased the color fidelity and screen resolution of the devices. In most cases, the screens themselves have also been boosted in size. I see no reason for that trend to halt, especially with competing devices coming out with surprisingly high resolution devices.
As an aside, I was just speaking with someone the other day about Wolfenstein 3D on the iPhone. If you think about it, the original home PC version ran at 320x200. Fast forward ~15 years and you can walk around with a higher resolution version in your phone. How bizarre is that?
Okay.gotta admit I do not know a lot about this stuff so maybe HD was a misleading term.Basically what I wanna know is whether there will be a handheld with 360 like graphics in a higher resolution than the DS/PSP. Is it possible? would it make a huge difference? etc.... Discuss....................
