1. I just noticed that some of the cutscenes are in 3D. How much is actually going to be in 3D?
2. Have they added any new conveniences, or are the new features simply new gadgets and games?

1. The gameplay will not be in 3D, more like 2.5D, like Diamond and Platinum.
2. Conveniences such as?

one of the things that i think is cool is that any pokemon can walk behind you like how pikachu did in yellow version.
the 3D parts in the game like buildings, houses and the land look more improved than they did in Diamond pearl and platinum

The engine is pretty much the same as the one seen in Diamond/Pearl/Platinum. HeartGold and SoulSilver are slightly more visual here and there, but only very slightly with a little bit of extra texture. Mario Kart DS or Metroid Prime: Hunters this ain't.

There are some cutscenes in 3D here and there but it is nothing that really enhances the game in any way.

When it comes to conveniences, a thing to note is the interface. In the previous three DS games, there was a lot of inconsistency on where you could use the touch screen and where you had to press a button in the menus. Here you can usually do everything with either the buttons or the touch screen, the latter being much more convenient. You really only need the D-pad to control your character, the rest can be done through touch control, even interacting with people, creatures and objects if you really want to.

Nice. I was going to get Platinum, but I might just wait till HeartGold/Silver whatever comes out.
I must say though, the titles are awful.

I suggest you try Platinum, too. At least if you haven't played Diamond or Pearl, you really owe it to yourself to pick it up.

I personally am a huge fan of the original Gold, Silver and Crystal editions, so I really appreciated the remakes. I liked how many places in Kanto that were scrapped from the original such as the Safari Zone (There is a new one in Johto, the one in Fuchsia City is now Pal Park for importing creatures from GBA cartridges), the caves on Seafoam Islands and in Cerulean city and Viridian Forest on Route 2 are all back from the Red,Blue and Yellow (or FireRed and LeafGreen) versions. Even the legendary Pokemon in Kanto are back.

Also nearly all of the features added to the Crystal version are back such as the Battle Tower (now part of the same Battle Frontier as in Platinum), the new secret rooms in the Ruins of Alph and the side-story involving Eusine and Suicune.

If you haven't played the original Gold, Silver or Crystal nor Diamond or Pearl I personally think HeartGold and SoulSilver are the better choice over Platinum, but do not hestitate to try out both as they are both fantastic offerings. HeartGold and SoulSilver are drenched in nostalgia-sauce for me as they are remakes of the best Pokemon games. 16 badges to collect, two regions and a massive pokedex of nearly 500 creatures to collect including some that were previously nearly impossible to obtain.
