I'll get it in a couple of minutes, after posting a couple more times. I even have a copy of Calamity Trigger for my PS3, so I can give a comparison between the two if I feel up to it.
I've only played for a few minutes so these are just first impressions:
In the single-player mode there was about five levels that are about 1 minute each. The combos, attacks, special moves, items are all basically identical (a simple generic jab). I would pass on this, it's not a very dramatic game.
You can choose point or life or flag mode in free play but they don't make a huge difference.
Multiplayer seems to be local only and require 2 - 4 DSi's that have the game.
This'll do then. Just finished going through the single-player campaign for one of the characters, and I can say it's better than and has more depth than Photo Dojo. It feels a lot like the Super Smash Bros. series, albeit in 3D arenas and at a much more frentic pace. Controls are simple, like SSB's. You move with the D-Pad, jump with B, use an item (which falls from chests like party balls in Brawl) with X, combo attack with Y and drive attack (think a character-specific move in SSB) with A. All rounds are one minute in length, which will usually make you wonder something along the lines of "What the hell just happened? Why did I just win?" and are why I can't really give you much more info on the differences between the combo attack and the drive attack. There are 3 different round types to choose from: Point, life and flag. Point mode is similar to SSB's coin mode, except the coins have been replaced with soba noodles. I swear I'm not making this stuff up. Life mode is a more conventional mode where you slug it out, depleting each other's life meters until only the champion remains. Flag mode is where the person who is holding onto the panda (yes, a panda. It's the flag. I'm not on something right now. I swear.) when the minute is up wins. There are five characters, each of who have a unique backstory, different drive attacks and (supposedly) combo moves. The action was too frentic for me to keep up with for me to notice different combo attacks, though one character froze me a couple of times with his combo move. There are two different modes, single-player and multiplayer. In single-player mode, you choose a character then go through 5 rounds with him or her, rotating throught the different modes, with the final battle being a one-on-one bought with a NPC for the boss. I didn't try multiplayer (yet), but it appears to be a customizable place where you can set up a custom-made battle or play with another person. Each stage has it's own gimmick to it, but the only one I can recall is one with a switch in the middle that collapses one half of the stage. That's about all I got. That took forever to write, so feel free to ask any questions and I'll do my best to answer them.
The game somewhat reminds me of Smash Bros, but in 3D. It's a simple two button fighter, it has different rule sets that alter the game, it allows you to use items to your advantage, and the stages have their own little gimmicks.
I do wish there was an option to disable the time limit in "Life" mode. Although it is more than possible to KO all of the opponents within the allotted time, I've had a few too many fights come down to a clock decision.
I can see this being an extremely fun multi-player game. Pity it's local only.
Do you like the game? And how many stage and characters are there?
It's hard to say this early, but I will probably like this game a lot. Not sure on the stage count, but there's 5 characters.
There are five stages. Kagutsuchi Port (Day)- Basic no gimmick stage.
Kagutsuchi Port (Night)- Same as Day, but three rectangular blocks have been added to the stage. And it's nightime.
Halloween- A graveyard stage, a Coffin sits in the middle with six graves surrounding it. Occasionally, three graves will open up and the combatants have to run into them. After three of the fighters have entered the graves, they close and the remaining player is struck with lightning, dealing serious damage.
Lost Town-In the middle of the stage is a lever that can be hit either left or right. Whichever direction the lever is hit, that half of the stage will fall down momentarily. Anyone on the half that falls will take damage before being placed back on the arena.
Church-A normal stage with a staircase in the upper-center. Occasionally a black chest will appear at the top of the staircase. Within the chest is a mushroom (an item that will make you grow to incredible heights, make you invincible, and allow you to cause damage just by touching an opponent). Without items on, the gimmick does not occur.
Is the AI smart, and can you adjust their difficulty? Any sign of unlockables?
And the most important ones: Is it fun? Is it worth me spending 500 points on it?
Sorry for the double post if I do. The AI is fine they're not brain-dead or about to get accepted into MENSA. You can't adjust them in single-player, but I have to check multiplayer to see if you can.
I saw the credits after beating the boss in single-player, so that's not a good sign for unlockables.
It's fun in the same vein as Pop Island or Super Smash Bros., as in it's frantic fun that'll have you coming back for more.
If you're sick of Photo Dojo and looking for a real fighting game on DSiWare or the DS in general, this'll do just fine.
I've been waiting for this game for a while now so thanks for the early impression on this one guys. I was mainly wondering about the a.i. but you seem to clear everything up. Adustable a.i. .......... priceless
Haven't played in a while, actually, but I'm pretty sure people still do. And don't forget, there are people here who would love to play (myself included).
