Having beaten the game on easy, I now have a few impressions, even though I plan to play through on the other levels. I disagree with the final score of the review (though the review itself was very good). I would give this between a 7.5 and 8 for the following reasons:
1. The game froze on me toward the end. I do software quality assurance for a living and that is unacceptable for an end user product. 2. The brevity of the game made it feel like less than a full game and more like a marketing tie-in for the retail release. I bought this game but if Capcom makes another game this short and Nintendo expects $5, I probably will not buy it. This is coming from a guy who beat Mega Man 1-4, Duck Tales, etc. back in the NES days and so experiences the pangs of Capcom nostalgia. 3. My play time is fairly limited, so Capcom could have provided a quick save option in game that would have allowed the player to start at the last checkpoint they passed. To preserve the retro feeling, the quick save could have been deleted once the player starts the game again, thus preserving the old school "die and restart" feel of the game and accounting for the portable nature of the system. I had difficultly finding 30-40 minutes to play through a level, and I assume this will only get worse when I play on higher difficulties. 4. Even though points 1 - 3 are criticisms, I have to give Capcom credit for the effort they put into the story and the quality of the design. The music is simply awesome, hats off to Bear McCreary. If this game were a little longer (5 levels maybe) and bug free, it would be in the top 3 games on DSiWare right now.
My theory is that the shortcomings of the game stem from the fact that development occurred in a very short period of time. Thus, they did not have time for testing or development of another level, which I am confident they could have squeezed in there without having Nintendo raise the price. Well, those are my initial thoughts anyway.
Since when do DSiWare games freeze?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!!? D:D:D:D:D:D:D:
From what I've seen, any DSiWare game can freeze. Usually the same game freezes at least twice for a player, so makes me wonder if it's a corrupt download maybe?
I just beat the game on Easy Mode. I didn't hit any glitches or game freezes though.
Dark Void Zero exceeded my expectations to be honest. I wasn't expecting it be a long game, so the length wasn't disappointing. The music was downright epic, and made me feel like a kid again. The gameplay was great, and I liked how there were side objectives in each level (which I didn't find all of except in Level 3).
I really hope Capcom puts out more NES-style variants of titles they are trying to promote.

To appreciate this epic game of epicness, check out my avatar. Its short, indeed, but knowing that this is an unfinished NES game made up for it. Oh, also, I never had this game freeze, ever. Blowing into the cartraige is awesome!
