Topic: So, You Can Now Ignore Users

Also, hypothetically speaking, you’d be in a forum where the only posts you can see come from admins and mods 😀

@RubyCarbuncle Yeah, I'm aware of the block feature - was just surprised in this specific instance that I could still see a post from an ignored user.

@antdickens Hey Ant, is something wrong with the ignore feature? I can see posts from users I have blocked and ignored. I’m on an iphone/safari. Can you look into this as I am afraid my posts can also be seen and I would like to be left alone by the more problematic people on my ignore list. Thank you!

Edit: looks like a false alarm. The user created a thread. Defeats the purpose a bit though. I guess I will be scarce again.

Are they posts, or new threads? Because if someone you ignored starts a new thread, you can still see that one post.

@Pizzamorg hmm looks like a new thread, that must be newer functionality or I have been fortunate up until now. Thank you for the heads up.

@antdickens Hey Ant, I think this is a false alarm, (sorry about that) but is it possible to toggle all of the posts of a thread off if made by an ignored user? Or make it more obvious who created a thread as opposed to just the last poster? I’m trying to stay safe on the forums. I can say that will keep me from making new threads. Thank you for your time.

Yeah, it was in part because of me. Some regulars on this forum have me ignored, this caused all sorts of functionality issues with the forum, because major general threads I frequented then disappeared from the forum index entirely. It basically broke my use of the forum because those people chose to ignore me, so this part of the feature was reversed. I am sorry though if it is having a negative effect on you in return It shows how hard the balance of this feature is.

It looks like it is just the new thread feature, I think it is still working as intended.

@Ryu_Niiyama I wouldn't let it stop you creating new threads - sure, the person(s) you are blocking will be able to see that initial post, but they won't be able to see any of your subsequent posts in that thread and you still won't be able to see any of their replies or posts so shouldn't make any noticeable difference to your safety in the forums. I mean, if someone is really desperate to see your posts it's not exactly difficult to get around the block feature.

@Ryu_Niiyama @Pizzamorg no worries, and yeah on reflection it made sense for threads not to disappear completely (especially ones with 100s or 1000s of replies) from ignored users. Therefore only comments/posts will be ignored/blocked and not threads/topics.

I just send a contact form with information about the reverse block feature and how it is abused by certain users that with for their comments to not be reported to the site admins.

I guess it was my fault for telling a user that his comment was removed because I reported it to the admins and he decided to remove that possibility?

I mean if a mod decided that the comment was worthy of removal as it breaks the community rules I see no reason to have a workaround that.

@Rambler Theoretically, if everyone blocked you, you wouldn't be able to read any posts on here. Aside from mods and admins, since I don't believe you can block/ignore them. Of course, that's only when you're logged in to that particular account.

If everyone ignored you, you'd see what everyone else had to say, but would probably wonder why nobody ever responded to your posts.

I do know regular users can’t ignore/block mods/admins. But I do wonder if we can fully block users? I’ve never tried.

Perhaps it’s possible for this hypothetical scenario to work.
