Topic: Why the hell don't classic Gameboy games have color?

So after a long time of being skeptical about Virtual Console, I decided to try it out. I bought one of my old favorite Gameboy games, Gargoyle's Quest. Now I know this was originally a game for the black and white (or black and green) Gameboys, but I still have the cartridge, and when I put it in my Gameboy Advance SP, it does have some color. Which makes it nicer in my opinion. Firebrand is actually red.

However, I was pretty astounded to find that the 3DS does not in fact have this feature. It's not even an option, it just isn't there. Surely if the Gameboy Advance was capable of this, the 3DS should be able to as well.

So I guess my question is, why not?

Nintendo is lazy. M2 ought to taught them how to do proper 3DS VC emulation. M2 does what Nintendon't.

No way do I believe they didn't originally plan to implement a colour system to play the games eventually when they made these games back in the day. I think it's ridiculous they don't give us GBC or SGB colour palette options when they're expecting us to pay money. A lot of us suffered through the pea soup era already and don't find any novelty in paying to do so again. I would have bought at least twice as many GB VC games if we had colour palette options, but as it is I'd rather just play my cartridges on my GBA instead.

Offer us DLC on GB games, Nintendo!
Options!!! Just the ordinary ones!

I like how M2 is somehow better than Nintendo when Nintendo told them to implement certain features.

It's always easier to delegate.

I don't know about that

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Nintendo isn't lazy, the problem is they have two different major problems. Lack of games for WiiU and shortage on staff due to them trying to fix the shortage! They can't implement new things into games and then expect them to release news games so quickly. Emulation is emulation. It'd be a different game with new features, a remake, we're just getting simple ports. And before you download VC, its up to you to see what features it has, just don't expect them!

That's funny, because my original experience with GB games featured at least four different non-monochromatic colors on the screen.

Because of that, I can't really fully enjoy many of these GB games, my nostalgia glasses aren't the correct ones. I really wish Nintendo had given us better GB emulation instead of just the bare minimum+green.

I'm actually kinda relieved Pokemon hasn't been released. It would feel wrong to play these games in black and white for me.

If Nintendo had used the Super Gameboy information for Donkey Kong '94 I would have enjoyed it more I think. (Still did because it is a great game. Much better than the puzzle ones.)

Yeah. A game like Metroid II would really benefit from a color palette option.

It was actually the Game Boy Color that added the palette features, so the feature has been available for even longer. I've said it before and I'll say it again - when Nintendo's paid retro emulation service cant compete with their own 15 year old hardware then they're doing something very wrong.

The reason the original Gameboy didn't have color as opposed to say the Game Gear was because Gunpei Yokoi found that the lack of color for one gave it a longer battery lifespan and that the dot matrix pixels showed up better with the black and green palette.

If it is about Game Boy games not being able to run as if they were on Game Boy Color...
someone years ago ripped the GB, SGB and GBC boot ROMs. (and I hear that was not an easy task, involving hacking up a few sacrifice consoles )
For Nintendo to get the GBC colors, they really just have to run the GBC startup ROM before running the game and it would do the work for them.

Admittedly truly accurate SGB support would be harder as it would have to emulate the SNES (including the SGB BIOS) and GB at the same time.
But still, even in the late '90s, fan emulators already took the cheat way and emulated palette/border functions.

I do wish I could have my GBC VC games appear in lime green mini GBCs in the menu.

Purple is ok, but mine was green so... Nostalgia.
