Well, ebay in my honest opinion is the best option. Honestly, ebay isn't hard to shop at all as long as you check seller reviews, know exactly what you're looking for, and trust your instinct if something seems fishy. Japanese sellers in my experience are usually pretty legit and consoles aren't exactly easy to bootleg in the first place.I actually got my 3DS XL from ebay and plan to do the same for my Vita since I want the Japan colors.
But if you're really that set against it, your next best (though more expensive) option is a proxy service like FromJapan. You can shop major Japanese sites through their service, have it shipped to their warehouse, and then they'll ship to you. However, you'll have to pay them a fee, pay shipping to their warehouse, pay shipping to your own house and if you get the console off an auction site, you'll also have to pay seller fees.
EDIT: I guess you could also try Amazon Marketplace but I honestly trust their sellers even less than I trust a Chinese ebay seller.

Thank you. I may go with eBay after all. :3 I'll just be extremely cautious.
I have and they are really a good company to buy from. I trust them more than ebay. But if you're planning on preordering you are out of luck right now. They are sold out right now.
Want: Harvest Moon: One World, Story of Seasons: Pioneering Town, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury
Finished the Alola Dex.
Now playing New Horizons, Wrath of White Witch and Sword
I wouldn't get it from ebay I would contact one of the big Japan sellers on your local Amazon and get them to get you one. Won't be loads more like Play Asia is for consoles.

You are probably aware of these details, but it may be worth reminding other readers of the thread that:
the 3DS is region-locked so all games will have to be Japanese imports; the menus on the hardware are in Japanese only, English is not an option; and that you can access the Japanese eShop with foreign credit cards but the conversion rate is quite steep (you can always buy pre-paid cards).
Yes. I hope all potential buyers of an overseas 3DS (New or otherwise) is aware of this. Thanks for posting this.

Can confirm Play-Asia is good. I've bought from them, almost no hassle in the process.
How long did it take you to receive what you ordered from them?
two weeks max.

I think you better go with the non xl new 3ds. it has smaller screen than xl but bigger screen compared to original/standard 3ds. for me, i will definetely go with new 3ds (non xl). bigger screen than the standard but not too pixelated like the xl. plus you can change the backplate.

I had a normal OG 3DS.. and my eyes aren't the best. On games like Monster Hunter it doesn't really work too well for me. I loved my girlfriend's XL though. Any technical reasoning behind suggesting to not go with the XL? Also I'll mainly be using it for Smash Bros.
