What's so misleading about "PS Vita tops hardware in Japan thanks to Hatsune Miku"? That's completely true. It was at the top ofthe Japanese Hardware charts. The chart makers in Japan are the ones counting the two 3DS systems seperately, not just Destructoid. In fact, they've always counted different major SKUs sperately. This shouldn't be surprising.
The XL isn't a new Nintendo handheld generation and it ranks combined with the 3DS. They show it that way because they're more concerned with providing an analysis of 3DS vs XL than they are with doing a ranking. If you want a ranking, you have to recombine them before determining if Vita is "top" seller. Even if you have terrible reporting standards, you still have to do it or else you're wrong.
What happened is more like "Vita tops Japan sales chart if you separate competition series by SKU..."
Because if someone asks "how much did it outsell the 3DS by?", it didn't.

In all honestly I really not that upset, it's just a little annoying. I know judging by the way I wrote it you might think I am raging behind the screen but trust me, I am not. It's more about just the extremely misleading nature of the title of the article. I don't care if the article is praising or insulting the Vita, the title is just too misleading, even for just a headline. It's not like it's keeping me up at night or something. I don't like Destructoid, so that might be contributing to my annoyance as well. Even the Capcom story on NL wasn't misleading this bad, and honestly in that case it's how you look at it and more debatable. I don't think Capcom was saying the Wii U isn't next gen. If want to know more about my take on that got to the comments section.

Then why not separate the two Vita models?
Major SKUs. The two Vita versions are basically the same. That's also why they don't seperate the current PS3 versions. They did seperate the Fat and Slim versions until the Fat stopped selling, and they seperate the PSP and the PSPGo, however.
Fifty bucks isn't major?

So what about the $30 difference between XL and normal, $50 doesn't mean a thing and $30 does?

For example, the Mac vs PC commercials. If you ask who is Apple's Mac computer competition, you would expect Microsoft PC.
This would be like a headline saying "Mac sells the most hardware", then finding out the analysis was Apple sold 4m, HP sold 3m, Dell sold 2m.
Late edit: Sony would love to use that for one of their own marketing headlines, but they can't, because it's wrong. They would have to provide complete and correct context within the headline, making it worthless to read.
