The only downside to keeping the account would be that you may not get Club Nintendo coins for your purchases.

Credit card data can be replaced without worry, and I can't think of any reason not to keep the games.

Accounts will become untied to the system around 2015, & they could take your account, thought they probably wouldn't. The real downside is you can't change & don't know what their password is.

I think you should contact nintendo and ask if it's possible to keep the games tied to the console with a new NNID.

But I recommend you to create your own NNID regardless.

Is there any trick that can be done with a system transfer ? (Maybe via another 3DS).

for those wondering why Nintendo and Sony and Microsoft put hurdles to something as simply as changing your network ID, this is the reason..... console makers all 3 of them want to make it difficult for you to sell your console with pre-installed digital games.... (Ironically MIcrosoft is the most consumer friendly of the 3 on this department as it does allow changing your ID although for a price)

Up until super recently Nintendo was the absolute opposite even if it was wiped the console could just go on and download what was assigned to it again.

But then people begged for a "unified" account and ... now we can't.
