In the Able Sisters store, it is possible to buy a Royal Crown, along with a Royal Shirt, Royal Shorts and a King's Beard. These are all references to the 2012 film, Moonrise Kingdom.

Sometimes when you trade in tickets you can receive items from The Legend of Zelda...but have you ever wondered what that was?

The Legend of Zelda is a classic video game series, spanning three excellent titles on the Philips CDi: The Faces of Evil, The Wang of Damelon, and Zelda Goes Hawaiian. When the CDi debuted gamers largely deserted Nintendo consoles in favor of this far superior system, which featured breathtaking animation, incredible voice acting, and gorgeous visuals. In fact, so many gamers flocked to the CDi that Nintendo became jealous of the CDi's huge popularity, which continues to this day.

By including items from the classic CDi series The Legend of Zelda, Nintendo is clearly intending to bury the hatchet, in the hopes that Philips will give them the rights to develop some Legend of Zelda games on their own.

Are you sure you're not thinking of a different series? The Faces of Evil and especially The Wang of Damelon are the games that turned the CDi into a bonafide phenomenon. Gamers waited in line for days, even weeks in some cases, prior to the dual launch of TFE and TWD, just for the chance to brag to their friends about getting their copies on day one. Knowing that many of their pupils would be unable to focus, if they showed up at all, a few schools even scheduled days off to coincide with the launch; the games were that big.

It didn't take long for the Super NES to turn into a historical footnote and a collector's item, and SEGA's sales were damaged to such a degree that they had no choice but to leave the console business entirely and start creating games for urinals.

Granted, Zelda Goes Hawaiian is not quite as great or well-remembered as the previous two, but it's still very much a classic in its own right - you could say it was the Zelda trilogy's equivalent to Return of the Jedi.

It's a shame that Philips ended the Zelda franchise after three entries, but sometimes ending a series while it's still on a high, both creatively and commercially, is worth commending.

Occasionally, in the Able Sisters store, you may find boxing shorts. This is a reference to the critically acclaimed game "Rocky" for PS2 and XBox, which has a port on the way for the WiiU, as the game is so advanced and popular that it needs no new content.
If you have a chicken in your town, buy an axe, a shovel, apples and an oven. Corner the chicken with four holes. Continuously talk to them until they ask for a fruit. Give them an apple. Then hand them the axe, they will "prepare for dinner". You can put their body inside the oven and have crispy chicken. I must point out that this only works on a full moon on a leap year that coincides with the summer solstice.

If you attempt to go see K. K. Slider perform on December 8, you will find him shot to death outside of Club LOL by a shadowy figure that leaves behind a copy of The Catcher in the Rye. This is a touching reference (and tribute) to the death of music legend Paul McCartney.

Thank you so much for all the cool references, everyone! I have tested them all out, and they all work! I even found out a reference of my own. If you name your town Philips, all the trees will spell out "zelda 4 coming 2014" obviously suggesting that the 4th legend of zelda game will be released next year.

Who are you running from? (?_?)/
someday there will be a cactus pokemon, that is actually good.

On Tortimer Island, one of the tours you can go on is a maze tour. This is a reference to the new popular book series, Maze Runner. There is no way out of this maze, but it would be possible if you could attempt the Tweeter Glitch, except there is no possible way to get a Tweeter on an island tour.

When it's your real-life birthday, characters in the game will help you celebrate! This is a pretty obvious (but I guess I'll say it anyway) reference to Breaking Bad, as meth kingpin Walter White also has a birthday.

Breaking Bad is referenced many times in Animal Crossing: New Leaf (which is why many fans have simply taken to calling it Breaking Bad: The Game), including when you attempt to buy the Death's Door from Tom Nook, and Nook replies, "I am the one who knocks!"

There is another reference to his legendary music group, The Cicada's. Because you can catch cicadas in game!

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, you can eat various items. This is a reference to the book series The Hunger Games, as you are eating, and Animal Crossing New Leaf is a game.

A fairly obvious reference, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

Funny stuff, gang.

Here's a real pop reference from New Leaf.

Rogueport is the starting point in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

Are you sure? i'm pretty certain it's a reference to Pan's Labyrinth, especially given New Leaf's final boss, the Pale Man.

Even the title is a reference. In the title (Animal Crossing: New Leaf), you can see it contains the word Leaf. This is a reference to Shell Silverstein's classic children's book, The Giving Tree, since the tree has leaves.
However, that isn't the only Giving Tree reference. When you officially become Mayor, a tree is planted in your honor. Also, Nintendo implemented the ability to give presents to villagers, an obvious reference to The Giving Tree.

Not to mention the Spongebob episode, New Leaf.

I can't believe everyone is missing the ludicrously obvious reference that is Gulliver himself. He is a sailor, a nautical profession. So is being a pirate captain. Captain Hook is a pirate captain, and he fights Peter Pan. Peter can fly, and so can seagulls. Gulliver is a seagull. Is it really taking people this long?
