The biggest surprise of the Pokemon Direct, killing of the Stars rumor and showing that the 3DS still has legs. https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/8638693/DBp...
Featuring "an alternate story" and the new legendary forms (looks like they fused with Necrozma-- an inversion of Kyurem absorbing Reshiram and Zekrom).
Even if they aren't full sequels a la BW2, people forget how much Platinum tweaked and changed things. Definitely on board.

Huh, that was unexpected. Its been awhile since I posted here and this dragged me over.
Well, can't really speculate much off of the few screenshots we have. Although I will say I find the ultra box legendaries fairly.... lacking in design so to speak. They clearly used the base models and just attached some armor (necrozma) onto various parts. Unlike kyurem, keldeo, or giratina, which had complete model updates.
I look forward to these games, although I was a bit depressed with sun and moon's awful PSS (festival plaza) that made the games short lived for me as I moved on to other stuff. Hopefully they fix that and add a lot to the story and post game, thankfully they have a lot to work with because of how well done sun and moon was in those regards (meh postgame though tbh, good step up from gen 6 but they have room to go further).
If there's significant changes from Sun and Moon, then I'll be hyped and will certainly pick one up. If it's just a slight change from Sun and Moon, then maybe I'll give them a miss.
Wait ... alternate story!? Maaaaan, I was hoping for a B2W2 with a teenage Lillie, Hau and Gladion, reformed Luaamine etc. Now I really don't know what to think of this anymore. I'll have to see more of it. Though, I can guarantee that I'll buy them day one.

I would have bought on Switch, but... for 3DS I'm having a hard time justifying buying this. And that's really saying something because I buy everything.

I honestly can't see what these games can do to make Alola exciting again, much less a mere year after the originals. Yeah, you can point to games like Platinum and BW2 making exciting changes to their regions, but the thing is those games had significant issues they could fix or room for expansion. Alola doesn't really have the same room to grow. The islands are all full, so there's not much room for new areas, and the dex is already pretty large and diverse so a dex expansion would be largely pointless. I just don't see the potential in this game.
Overall, I'm on board as well. As mentioned above, Platinum really added quite a bit to Sinnoh, and while Emerald didn't add as much, I liked how it combined the stories of Ruby/Sapphire and added new areas like the Battle Frontier (I sucked at getting symbols, but it was fun!). I feel like some people are jumping the gun a bit when they're saying that Ultra Sun/Moon aren't adding enough. We've barely seen any footage yet!
To be honest though, these sequels seem to be coming almost TOO quickly; I thought they should have waited another year. My best guess is that they wanted to get these out before Nintendo completely drops 3DS support.
...Plus, I still haven't gotten around to playing Pokemon Sun yet. XD
Currently playing: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch)
It really frustrates me to see the amount of hate the game has been getting, we've only seen roughly 15 seconds of game footage, and aside from the tiny amount that was shown, we know almost nothing besides that it's an alternate story to Sun and Moon, which could potentially mean a lot has changed. We've been getting a third version of Pokemon games for years besides XY and potentially BW if you don't count B2W2, and I didn't see quite as many people get mad over Platinum or Emerald being released, so why USUM?

Either they're upset that this isn't on Switch or aren't interested in revisiting Alola this soon. I don't think a lot of people wanted a 3DS update of SM in 2017.
Not surprised by this announcement actually. Kinda similar with Black & White 2. Both games went to the DS instead of the 3DS that just came out. And Pokken going to Switch was no surprise either.

I feel like the main reason why people act so - I don't wanna say stupid but...- stupid is some kind of Switch honeymoon phase.
I think the Switch has been the exact opposite of a honeymoon phase. Even before its announcement all it's been nothing but constant criticism for every little difference from the multiplatform systems.
A ton of people always act like their old systems magically disappear from the world as soon as something new is released and how they absolutely can't ever """justify""" buying games on a "dead system".
Basically. People still released PS3 games for a solid 2 years after 8th gen had great success. The Switch is just an example of hypocritical judgement.
Not gonna lump everyone together but it's mostly people on the internet being entitled idiots.
@Tsurii I'm not part of that group, I just don't own a 3DS, so seeing a Switch release of Pokemon would've been neat. I'd get that day one. Same with the VC releases. However, as it stands now, it's a bit weird seeing Nintendo competing against themselves. Yes they've done it before, but a dual release wouldn't have been that weird, would it?
@Haru17 The difference is that those PS3 games also came to PS4. And IIRC, it wasn't Sony releasing new games for the PS3 after the launch of PS4, those were third party titles.
@Octane I think it's very clear that it was The Pokemon Company's decision to release Ultra Sun and Moon on the system with the established install base.
