One of your friends will let you choose from the Kalos Region Starters, and a little while later, Professor Sycamore will let you choose from the Kanto Region Starters. Though, I'm not exactly sure on how to obtain them yet as I do not have a copy of the game myself. Maybe you overlooked something important? I don't know. ~
